Just to put a bit of perspective on this thread, during the 80s, which I loved football wise and every other wise, I remember going into the Albany pub when it opened at 6pm on a Saturday after coming back from HR and striking up a conversation with a couple of old boys, (probably the same age as I am now), who were saying how much football had changed from their heyday in the 60s and 70s and how they didn't bother going anymore! I thought they were mad.
I agree with all of the anti Premiership sentiment expressed on here but it is very easy to look back through rose tinted spectacles.

I was thinking exactly this a few days back. I can remember my step-grandad (who loved proudly telling me about how he played in an Army side during the war with a couple of Arsenal reserves!) complaining in the 80's at how defensive it all was now, that it was much more exciting in his day with "proper wingers" etc. Thing is, I probably would have agreed with him if I'd had a time machine....

That said, anyone else remember the weekly Skinner and Baddiel segment, "Old Football Was Rubbish But Not As Rubbish As Andy Cole", during which they'd play a clip from the old days of ineptitude, then play a clip of Cole (who was having a bit of a goal drought at Man U at the time) fluffing an easy chance? Usually accompanied by Cantona shaking his head in disbelief...

The interesting thing about that video is not the tackles themselves but the number of people who jump straight back up again. No rolling around for 5 minutes and going off on a stretcher just to influence the ref.

The PL is massively overhyped, some of the most exciting football I've ever watched was over in Italy. Yet people here believe the myth that Italian football is boring and the English league is the best in the world hahaha
