Just read this tragic story. Four members of a British family all killed in a car accident in Florida. The report says their rental-car GPS told then to make a U-turn, which turned out to be illegal. I'm sure driving on the other side of the road disoriented them as well.

I've driven abroad a few times and have to admit it takes more then a few weeks to get use to it, I always go to look in the rear view mirror and just end up looking out the window like a fool. Never turned into on coming traffic though.

I drive abroad so much that it comes natural. And I have never had a problem with it.

But when a pedestrian it is a different matter. I look to the right before stepping into the road frequently

I still do the same haha and often end up trying to get in driver's side here when a passenger. I've never had any problems driving abroad and picked it up very quickly and can now switch between the two with ease.

Can't blame the sat nav. If you turn into on coming traffic the blame lays with you.

Exactly ,you can't rely on it.
Especially If you are disorientated from your Normal Environment.

The amount of times that I have jumped in the passenger seat wondering where the steering wheel has gone....in my own car :smuggrin:

Driving on the other side is a doddle, however, certain foreign road markings are just bonkers.
Combine that with the less than fantastic standards of driving on certain parts of the continent, and its easy to see how accidents happen.
Driving in central Rome or Paris is not for the feint hearted.

Drove through Paris last week. The weather was nearly as bad as the driving. If you don't drive like them you won't get anywhere. And they have their own rules on how to drive around an island. Utter chaos but enjoyable.

My favourite place is Milan. Near the centre there is a multi lane road that goes around in a circle with sets of traffic lights. Last time I enjoyed it so much that I went around a few times. Just kept burning off their little fart boxes in a people carrier. They were not to know that it was a 3.3 V6 petrol that had been remapped. Never had the middle finger shown to me as much :smuggrin:

Driven abroad many times and find it a doddle, but taking my own car in the summer and expect it to be an odd experience.

It is easier in your own car. You are used to it all already. Just a little more caution needed when overtaking while driving on the right in a RHD car.

Its easier than adapting to a LHD car.

Best thing to do when wanting to overtake is stay a bit further back than normal. Then you can see just about as much.

Mild compared to Naples and Sorrento.

Took the hire car back with all manner of dents, the bloke at the rantal company just shrugged his shoulders and gave me my deposit back.

If your wife/girlfriend/significant other has short arms, or panics when at a toll booth ...ditch her and take someone else.... :emoji_sweat_smile:

My wife must have looked like Houdini trying to escape from a box as she leant out the window to put the money in. She was more out the car than in most of the time.. I had to stop further away from the booth so she could get out each time.. and then she got flustered as to what to do next. I think she is so used to taking money from me and putting it straight into her purse, she couldn't handle giving it to a machine...

Still, only drove down to Sorrento in Italy, so it didn't happen often... :banghead:

Bought my sister an estate car and took it to her in France a couple of weeks ago. A mate of mine came with me and drove one if my cars. We made a few drivers irate as each time we hit the toll booths we would have to stop, get out and pay, then get back in and drive forward so the other one could do the same process again :smuggrin:
