McNulty or Armstrong (6 Viewers)

It was a very exciting time when Armstrong was banging them in and importantly the crowds returned. McNulty has proved a brilliant acquisition.... so if you had both players but could only play one of them, which one is the question?

Armstrong more clinical and pacy. McNulty has better touch and link-up player.

Armstrong is better overall I think but I don't think he'll ever be more than a Championship striker as his touch and all round game isn't good enough.

Armstrong without a shadow of a doubt. He might struggle to show consistency in the Championship but over the course of a season he's easily one of the best strikers in League One.

Armstrong tailed off badly at the end of the season with us... took an age to score that 20th goal. McNulty has improved immensely and is peaking at just the right time. Not the same killer instinct but a better all round player. I go for McNulty... more a team player without sacrificing goalscoring opportunities.

Didn't McNulty take time to hit any kind of consistent form this season? Armstrong's first half of his season with us wasn't much different to the second half of this season for McNulty. It took McNulty until the end of December to reach double figures in all competitions. Armstrong reached the same amount of goals by the end of October. Not to mention his movement on the ball was electric, he'd cause defences nightmares at times with his speed and skill and his finishing IMO is better than McNulty's. Also, I don't think you can completely blame Armstong's goal drought on Armstrong alone, the whole team went through a slump during a period of the season where we only scored 9 goals in 13 games.

Don't forget that Armstrong was 18 years old during his time with us, (4 years junior to MM) during at which time McNulty was struggling at Sheffield United at the same level in League One. So much so he was loaned out to Portsmouth in League 2, where in all fairness he did well

McNulty is a great finisher, scored plenty of goals out of nothing. Armstrong played in a team that made him plenty of chances. McNulty doesn't.

Armstrong would score eleventy billion a game against the cavemen defenders in league 2

Armstrong has 29 goals in 59 games in league one, McNulty is 11 goals in 55 matches at that level.

Armstrong although only young, has failed to be prolific at Newcastle, Barnsley and Bolton with a combined 7 goals in 71 games. Only at L1 has he so far been anything like prolific so the jury is still out there too. McNulty hampered by injuries and taken time to adjust, is now showing his capability after a consistent run. I think he too could tear up L1 next time, but the Championship is a huge gulf and would need to find something extra that I don't think he has. On potential you'd still have to say AA has the greater improvement in him, but right now I'd be equally happy with either and have a lot to offer at our level.

In that case I'd go with 20 goal a season proven man in league one.
Well that's it isn't it. A league higher. Makes all the difference.

Would like to think McNulty will still be banging them in, in League 1, but we obviously can't say with any certainty yet.

I'm not saying he isn't, he's scored 26 goals of course he's a good finisher. I'm simply saying Armstrong's finishing ability is just that much better which he's shown by excelling in a higher league and by some of the goals he's scored.

Granted he was in a better team. But, have a look through his highlights and just count how many goals he scored by creating space for himself. It's probably a similar percentage to that of McNulty if not more.

Also I would like to add...McNulty (although he didn't score) played very well against Stoke, MK , and Brighton.

He certainly imo would bang them in league 1 also.

Also to consider is what else do they add apart from goals. Not on a particular side here, but MM not only scored 3 on Saturday but was involved in all 6.

One scored goals in the league higher and one scored goals in the basement league.

Armstrong clearly had the pace and I believe a better trick/ quicker feet. But he gets found out at a higher level, where defenders know when to stand back, or mark closely etc

Mcnulty has the eye for a goal - but so many of them are similar where he creates space on his right foot coming from the left and passes it into the far corner. That is not a criticism but a clear skill. The worry is whether cleverer defenders would identify that

Armstrong got the fans onside from day 1, whereas Mcnulty was written off by many (including myself I will admit to) .
Mcnulty has now got that cult status, but Armstrong never lost it, so people think of him with rosier glasses - albeit both with excellent goalscoring records

Armstrong had Murphy/ Kent/ Maddison/ Lameiras/Cole
Mcnulty has had Vincenti/Biamou/DKE/Shipley/Bayliss/JCH

so if we had both players as the question asks I would play

Armstrong until christmas
Mcnulty after christmas
and guarantee 40 goals from the pair of them

One thing I've noticed over the course of the season is that McNulty very rarely plays directly in partnership with whoever he's up front with, in our attacking build up. Quite often we have 1 striker in each attacking quadrant, miles apart. What he excels at is making his own runs and finding the pockets of space either made for him or left for him by dodgy L2 defending. Think that hurt us against the 'park the bus' teams in the first half of the season because he was just choked out of the game when it became compressed into a 3rd of the pitch with not much movement around him. I'd be interested to see him as first choice in a more tactically astute league as I think that will have been a reason he's struggled a bit higher up the league.

At 25, he's still young and learning though. I always like to give my players a key area to work on for the season, as well a smaller incremental targets . Sometimes you beat teams with individual brilliance and sometimes you break teams down as a team and his decision making of when to drift around and when to play more with his partner would be up there for me as his key area to develop.

When Armstong was playing the football was exciting. Have him anyday!

Sitting on the fence on this one. Armstrong is easy to defend against as most of his goals were from getting in behind the defenders at speed, if the defence does not play high up, he is limited. I think McNulty is better all round, but Armstrong will now have more experience so I am going for McArmstrong-Nulty

That’s rubbish

McNulty has only started in about 13 league one games. He had 27 appearances as sub and a lot of those were late.

Armstrong’s goalscoring record other than one purple patch is far worse.

Even in his purple patch he had a good few scoreless games. He got found out second half of the season.
