Did i hear correctly that he will be out until September?

Seems a shame he'll miss the first month or so of the season... would hope we would come out all guns blazing at the start!

Bayliss has earnt the right to start the season on the wing, presuming he’s shown good form in pre season and hasn’t been sold before then.

If TB is still here then he deserves to start, and I would rather know JJ is 100% by leaving him a month extra. Looks like they will all be fighting for spots now anyway which will be nice

Still feel he is our weak link. Still doesnt make a challenge and not great on set pieces. With all players fot he wouldnt be in my team for sure
I love how as fans we can have different perspectives on players.
Personally I think Shipley is a very good player and has the potential to get even better.
I think he’s another one who will go on to have a very good career.

Not wanting to argue but genuinely interested why you think this. Ive not met many who share your view in honesty. To say he is very good is a huge exaggeration in my opinion.

No worries...
I’d generally disagree with you about his ability to take a set piece.
I also think the lad has some skills and, my understanding is, like Bayliss has been playing out of his favoured position for most of last season.
I’ve heard the argument that he doesn’t ‘put a foot in’ but I’ve genuinely not noted it. However, maybe he’s just not that sort of player?
He hasn’t always been brilliant and for a while last year I thought he looked very jaded. However I feel his contribution over the season and with the potential and skill set he has, he’s got to be worth investing some more ‘game time’ in.

His corners especially were terrible. It is only when Kelly took over we actually looked dangerous. Are you basing your opinion on 1 free kick at Luton? He doesn't put a foot in, as has been noted several times on here before. I don't deny he has some ability but in respect to the squad as a whole he shouldn't be in the starting XI.

I’ve seen it noted on here about his tackling...I just haven’t particularly noted it myself. If this is the case, like I say, maybe he’s just not that sort of player?
I think most of the new players are unknown quantities so, in respect of the squad, who has he suddenly dropped behind?

Surely him ‘not being good at set pieces’ isn’t a reason to drop him?
Fair enough with the not putting a foot in comment, but then does Jodi Jones do this?

As 1st division player he will have a very good career but unless he can get some bite into his game that is where he will see his career out

He’s not our weak link at all. He’s on the same amount of goals as Bayliss in a similar amount of games. Yet, Shipley has double the assists Bayliss has. Considering your average Cov fan views Bayliss as the second coming Christ on Earth, backing him to go all the way, from a statistical point of view, Shipley is 100% our most underrated player.

In my view, both Shipley and Bayliss have to work on the physical side of the game because neither player ‘makes a challenge’. From set-pieces, it wasn’t just Shipley’s deliveries that was the problem, no one was attacking the ball in the box — it’s a collective failure. Shipley isn’t there to ‘make challenges’, DeKE threw himself about and look where he is? Oh wait, Nuneaton...

We’ve got a promising pair in Bayliss and Shipley, at 19 and 20 respectively, they have a lot of developing to do and at the minute, they’re both in my starting eleven.

Shipley isn't a bad player but I think he is still developing if he can push on and manage to get a start over incoming players then fair play to him but I doubt it at this stage. He is definitely weak in the challenge but although tackling isn't his forte' he does have other attributes but he needs to be more consistent...exciting season ahead

Disagree with Bayliss not putting a foot in. Was one of the things that impressed me when he broke into the team that he was getting stuck in and wasn't intimidated, picked up a few bookings too if I remember well. He definitely has more aggression to his game
What is Shipley's natural position do you think? Can't play DM if he shirks a 50/50, hasn't got the trickery needed to be a 'get to the byline' type of winger and his final ball let him down several times when he had the chance to play the killer pass. For his strengths, he gets box to box and his fitness improved hugely over the season, can finish a move well and has a great longer pass on him.
For me, with Bayliss and his ability to dribble and be direct he is ready to hold down a place in L1, he needs to become more consistent though - brilliant one game, invisible the next. With Shipley, I feel he needs to develop other areas of his game first before he holds down a regular place. He's got great attributes but not the key attribute to make a position his own yet.

Shipley’s a left midfielder, not a winger IMO.

He’s got good vision and technical skills, a decent eye for goal as well. He’s not a DM at all. Beckham never really used trickery to bear a man and get to the byline (not that I’m comparing the two, just saying it’s not a requirement to be a winger)

I like him, but previously I liked Conor Thomas and Bigirimana so watch your heart with all that salt.

End of the day they both came into the team following injuries to key players and both performed admirably considering they were thrust into first team action a bit quicker than the manager would've preferred. Think Robins even said he argued with his coaching staff as when he first selected Bayliss, they thought he wasn't ready for the first team and he went and scored on his debut and Robins was quite smug about the call he made. I'd be more than happy if they are both in and around the first eleven this season. Are they complete players yet? Of course not, they'd be playing much higher already if they were.

Young players shouldn't be required to play 90 minutes twice a week as we were forced to last season
My feeling is that Robins is strengthening the squad so that the load can be more evenly spread
Same applies to guys like Doyler although he is stronger than most at his stage of his career
There is a feeling among physios that the big increase in ACL injuries may be caused by too many matches in too short a period

Please remember Shipley and bayliss were plan b on wings. Overall they did great for us to help clinch promotion but after s transfer window and going into a better league chances are they will not be plan a on wings.

Doesn't mean they won't get minutes or will not develop this season. We have lots of games and with a squad this big the chdcktrade group stage will be most welcome ironically. Do we know if we are allowed to make 11 changes this season?

Shipley is just 20ffs broke into the team half way through last season, scored half a dozen goals and assisted some, he was raw but got better and better, as he improved so did the team. He will get better

And what will he have learned while he's been out injured ?

I don't follow. You referenced JJ is league one (2 seasons ago) when he was barely out of nappies and playing in a poor side. He may not have learned much while out injured, but he is 2 years older and had an excellent half season in league 2. He is older, physically stronger and probably a bit wiser. I think he is an exceptional talent but he still has plenty to learn of course.

When Bayliss played out wide, he had a tendency to give away cynical fouls because he was beaten by his man -- the away leg v Notts County is a good example of this, frankly, Bayliss is not significantly better than Shipley defensively, at least in wide positions.

Your points about Shipley's game are valid, which is why he's suited to his role as a wide midfielder — not to be conflated with that with the traditional role of a winger. Shipley has impressive finishing, dribbling and ball control abilities which are evident in the goals he's scored and it made him a valuable asset to our team last season. He's one year older than Bayliss, so both players have got plenty of developing to because neither player is complete yet. One day, Shipley may well make a fine central midfielder, but for now, he offers a balanced option on the left hand side, has a good link with Bayliss (as well as others) — both assisting one another at the end of the season!

Its nice that we can change it up based on opposition wether to go with pace hugging the touchline/cutting in or with more central wide men where its more about killer pass rather than skinning your man

Never understood that criticism. Cuts inside? Of course, that's exactly what he was there to do. Why else play a very left sided player wide right. It was the whole point. Predictable perhaps, but also effective. Scored against both Notts County and Lincoln switching the ball to his left foot in a wide right position.

Robins got it right with JJ last season, would often switch from right to left during a game, as we saw against NC, scored his 1st two from the right and scored his 3rd playing down the left. Very effective.
