We were awful and never tested their keeper in open play. Southgate has to forget his loyalty to sterling - we play with 10 men with him there.

Colombia are a typical South American side. Like Uruguay they know their limitations, especially without James, and set out to spoil, wind up and frustrate. It's difficult to look good against that and let's face it we're nothing special. Overall we were the better side though and Colombia would've been fortunate to go through.

Correct on Sterling. Times up.

Can't see it. Am convinced Southgate will stick with him. Incorrectly in my opinion, but I do think that is what will happen.

I’m not sure he will.

I don’t get the angst about Young - he does suit the system well but sterling looks off his game

Ian Wright...what a model of modern Englishman he is imo!

Presenter referring to Dier's penalty saying the keeper 'got a hand on it...(Wrighty)"WHO CARES?"...in fairness' lol

Top man of the 'experts' for me because is SO in tune with the average Englishman watching

Young's just on the wrong side of the pitch, is my main gripe.

Think we've looked better on that side going forward with Rose there.

It was a disgrace at times and it is clear they don't have to play like that. They looked quite decent when they finally decided to start playing football and attacked us.

Some of that tonight was everything wrong with football. How can it take 3-4 minutes to take a free kick because of all the antics. Pushing and jostling the ref, walking in and out of the 10 yard zone, standing in front of the free kick taker, encroaching and constantly trying to intimidate the ref. They seemed to go crazy with every free kick given against them and their coach at half time was disgraceful.

Don't get the penalty dispute either. They were incessant they had been served an injustice. Didn't someone say it was nearly 5 mins before the penalty could actually be taken,
FIFA failure. all the briefings inc. for refs was that this was to be clamped down on hard. Been a big negative this was WC. Tonight was worst example.

I'd bring in Welbeck for Sterling, Loftus Cheek for Alli and Rose for Young. Welbeck is able to play with his back to goal and let Kane stay in the area. Kane was having to come into midfield to get hold of the ball.

Sterling just not coping with the physicality of the various opposition.
Plus not sure system suits him as he's not finding any open space like he can do.

Thought the stamping on the pen spot was the pits.

Rose is better than Young in my opinion. Young loses possession too often, though tonight in the second half I thought he did play well.

Needs clamping down on. If we allow stuff like that it will just get worse and worse.

Can also see it not being long before players start punching or kicking referees in a major tournament.

Tonight they were intimidating the ref and he couldn't handle it. They saw he was weak and exploited it.

A good ref would not have let several minutes pass between a foul be given and the freekick taken.

Rose coming on gave us some momentum at a time when Colombia looked all but certain to bag another goal. Young had been struggling with a knock, but I do think Rose is better for driving forward.

Can’t go through that again! Not sure the formation is convincing, defense looks okay but can’t handle too much pressure. Wing backs look busy but not enough quality getting through.

Sweden is a completely different prospect, they will play fair but a lot more hardworking.

I wonder if anyone else like me didn't cheer when Dier scored and merely breathed a great sigh of relief.

I was emotionally wrought by the end, after being really calm until about the last 5-6 mins.

Before the shootout, I was confident about us winning if it came down to it. That quickly went away when it started and had a crisis of confidence, especially when Henderson missed. To win on penalties is massive for the psyche of the nation, we really needed this! I had a feeling that if we were to get deeper in the competition, we’d have to win on penalties.

Overall, we were the better side, didn’t create many clear cut chances, but you don’t get many chances in games like tonight.
