The normal one, or the Fruit Twist variety?

If it's the latter that is scandal.

Must be some of the worst shenanigans we have ever seen against us in a major tournament mustn't it.

It was absolutely outrageous.

1. Delaying tactics and not just delaying tactics, but delaying tactics to a ridiculous level and whole new ball game.

2. Their coach barging Sterling at half time as he came off the pitch.

3. A whole new level of dissent. The ref was shoved, pushed, surrounded, at every given opportunity and they should have had several players booked for dissent, which of course would have resulted in them probably being down to 8 or 9 men, as many had already been booked anyway. It wasn't just the amount of dissent, it was the longevity of it, as it just didn't seem to stop.

4. That head-butt. We've all seen players lose their rag and hit out and end up head-butting someone, but this was meticulous and sneakily pre-meditated. Very deliberate and should have been a red card.

5. The scuffing up of the penalty spot. Whichever players did that should receive a 6-10 match international ban.

The amount of time between an infringement and a kick being taken was an absolute joke.

Felt sorry for the Colombian fans, but for their players, absolutely no way. They deserved all they got. It was a disgrace and there is no place for it in football.

Oh and maybe I was away or something, but when was this rule introduced whereby any freekick in your own half and any throw in can be taken from wherever you want?

At times 20 yards was gained.

Once again the standard of refereeing was appalling as was the VAR adjudicators, and we thought the standard in League 2 was bad enough.

Without Rodriguez, they were the most cynical team in the tournament. Falcao in particular was taking things too far shouting in the referee’s face at even the minor decisions and he was captain! FIFA need to be serious about kicking our dissent, even if it introduced a rugby-style ‘sin bin’ or something, because as you say, it should not take 3-5m for a penalty to be taken without VAR. Falcao accusing the officials being biased towards towards them sums him up.

A lot people would’ve lost respect for Columbia after last night. For all their unsportmanlike behaviour, they deserved to be the ones we broke the penalty shootout hoodoo against.

This group of players will benefit exponentially from winning a penalty shootout. It should gives us that extra freedom knowing we’re not scared of penalties anymore.

All props to Southgate, further evidence that having a ‘big name’ manager isn’t needed in international football.

The most frustrating thing about South American teams is that they don't need to be shit houses, so much talent there and Colombia had some brilliant footballers but they tend to drag the game to the lowest common denominator.

It's the Sunday League refs I worry about - not an easy job at the best of times and it's only a matter of time before that kind of behaviour starts getting replicated in amateur footy. There must have been a directive to let as many matches finish 11vs11 so as not to ruin games through red cards. I can't think why else they would suddenly accept such levels of dissent.

Not to mention the after match comments from their manager about England players being good at falling over in the penalty area, he seemed to imply that what his team were doing was acceptable. Would a South American referee had given the penalty? I am not sure how any England players could shake hands with the Columbians after that although I only saw a few like the Spurs players with Sanchez. The worst thing for me is that when the Columbians want to play they can be very good so why not try doing that from the start, we might have got knocked out but that would have been ok for me but I would have been pissed off if we had lost to them last night.

I am becoming a huge fan of Southgate, he says the right things, maintains his dignity but best of all he behaves like a fan at the end.

Refs piss me off.

You have people on social media saying that it;s wrong to say anything about refs or when Poundland make a t shirt saying "the ref needs glasses" that there is outrage because of attacks on refs.

Nobody is saying beat the ref up, they are just saying have a word with themselves and get some bollocks. If you let 6 players jump up and down and scream in your face everytime you give a decision then start booking them and they will soon stop.

Too many of them invite criticism by being inept and having no bottle to make big calls.

If the referee had sent off several players fifa would have removed from this and future tournaments.

Haha. Only a few days ago you were in the 'win every game regardless' camp, suggesting that if Southgate aimed to finish second in the group it would have a negative effect on the players and anyone who saw if differently was naïve. Pleased to see you've seen the light. Agree with your first statement though.

sums up the hypocrisy of the situation. FIFA bleating on about player behaviour clampdown (diving, harrassing ref, dissent) pre-tournament. But the refs know they follow it through they'll be binned for this and other tournaments.
Disappointment is also how weak VAR has been on these issues as well.

excuse me? nothing has changed

we had to try to win, it would have been stupid not too. one roashford shot few inches to left and we may have won group. idiotic to think we threw that game. both teams went for it.

fact we got 2nd and easier half of draw in end is luck,we should NEVER aim to lose. and besides japan showed no easy games regardless. so show caution with sweden

southgate clearly had fitness as his priority to change 8 players, not to lose.

The biggest problem with the ref last night was, that he should have come down like a ton of bricks on some of the Columbian player's antics.

He could and I have seen at least two refs do it in this competition and therefore gain the respect of the players.

Can't remember exactly which games unfortunately, but one especially was taking no nonsense and the players reacted accordingly and he had full control all match.

Couple of things made me a proud Englishman last night and one of them was Harry MaGuire's reaction when he went down in the area.

He immediately got up and signalled to the ref 'no pen.'

Just wondering if we would ever see that from the French, or the Germans, or the Spanish, or any other the South and Central American countries. Oils any of their players do that, and in such a huge game?

Think we are pretty unique in that. Not saying all English players would do that by a long chalk, but I think we do have that trait about us as Englishmen.

Then he’d be banned by FIFA who are clearly trying to reduce cautions in the games

Absolutely right. Fifa ignore their responsibility time and time again. They should come out today to support the actions of the ref last night and lay down a directive on all the negative issues we have seen before in this tournament. It is no use blaming refs when the governing body does nothing.
They should for example set up a panel for retrospective action on ref intimidation, rolling around floor when hardly touched, intimidation by coaches of players, any other glaring unsportsmanlike behaviour not seen by ref.
Say there will be 10 match ban on that coach last night who barged sterling. Despicable.
Red card given to the player for deliberate headbut on Henderson (and ban from next three competitive Colombian matches). Equally look again at Henderson situation later and if it a butt then retrospective red card also.
Look at antics of neymar et al and ban for between 1&3 matches players deemed to be attempting to cheat/con the ref. Similar for any player arguing with the ref & immediate yellow
Any player deliberately tampering with the field of play a ban.

If Fifa did this and followed it up by enacting on it it would end all this type of behaviour within a few games.
But I guess Fifa will not be serious in trying to eradicate unsportsmanlike and deliberate foul play. They will continue to allow their officials to be bullied in reffing the games and will close their eyes and put their snouts in the trough.

I would even go further last night and charge Columbia with failing to control their players and staff with a hefty fine and/or a ban for next World Cup.

On a more positive note I have to say that Southgate and his players have gone up in my estimation. The players remained calm and stuck to their take even when they were second best. Players like maguire have been a revelation and Harry Kane (not been his biggest fan to date) so calm when players all over him. Trippier for me was at fault for their goal but he didn’t falter after that and had a good game. Southgate (I was a little disappointed when he got the job if I’m honest) has really grown as a manager and whether we win or lose v Sweden I hope everyone gets behind him. He has brought a very average squad of players and developed them into a decent football side. He has got a team better than the sum of its parts and that is down to him and his coaches.

Spot on. Otis and co seem to think he could just show a couple of red cards and seem incapable of acknowledging the fact he’d get a dressing down and told to do one by FIFA

Agree with that, BUT, I have seen refs in this competition have control, so it is not just all about FIFA.

If other refs had followed the example of the very good refs it would eradicate most of the problem anyway.

There HAVE been refs in this tournament that have had control.

Why have Colombia not behaved in the exact same manner in other games over there?

One game they had a player sent off within 3 minutes.

If they think they can get away with it they will, if they can't they won't.

You keep mentioning other refs but oddly have forgotten the games.....

You said that he should have reduced them to 8 or 9 men.

Do you think that the the guy who “head butted” Henderson should have been sent off?

Oddly? Why oddly?

I am sure other posters would confirm.

If I have time I will look back, because I even mentioned it on here somewhere during the game in question.

Yes, the guy who headbutted Henderson should have been sent off.

The ref didn't even see it. Had he done he may well have sent him off, but he didn't.
