Does anyone else have "associates" who are English born and bred, yet take much glee in the English football team losing?

Personally, I don't like many more other sports other than football and rugby, but I'd never rout against England, regardless of the sport.

Just wanted an additional stance on this, as I've seen several people I know revel in the result tonight...

Some Scouser on Talksport was full of glee saying England were carp and he was cheering for Croatia. When Cundy said you're English he said no I'm Scouse and I'm glad they got beat. He then started rattling on about how Liverpool had won 5 champions league so we're more successful than England's 1 World Cup. Cundy called him sad and scum!!!

I think it’s people who are generally bitter, angry and negative or just think it’s clever to be contrarian.

I was sat with a Scottish woman, she was more Come on England than i was. Next bar after we had lost i had an Irish guy loving it. From what i have seen out here, the home nations stuck by England but the Rep of Ireland fans could not wait for us to lose.

If it's England, or an Englishman, in any sport, I am rooting for them all the way, be it football, rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, F1, darts, snooker, cycling, curling, hockey, swimming etc. etc.

And I always have considered myself an Englishman rather than a Brit. Englishman first every time.

Doesn't matter either if I dislike Man U, or Chelsea, or Liverpool, or whoever, as soon as they are playing in a European match, I back them. Even backed Villa when they won the European Cup. They represent England.

I know a chap born in Cov, English parents supports Republic of Ireland and Glasgow Rangers and will be going to work today very happy

Simply cannot get my head around that at all.

I think you are what you are. If you are Welsh you are Welsh and if you are Scottish you are Scottish etc.(not talking in terms of those with mixed heritage of course).

How can you be English and have English parents, but then support the Irish and be happy that England lose?

Bizarre to my mind.

Coming out of the ground I gave a bit of banter (sorry horrible word) to a guy in an Aussie shirt about sand paper. Not only was he gutted that England had lost but he also was Scottish! Was a bit taken back by that to say the least.

Few years back, my Mother Outlaw (who is English born to Welsh parent) had just got back from a long weekend in Ireland and was cheering them on in the 6 nations. Thing is, she was cheering them on against Wales, who, if they beat the Irish Garunteed the English the title (regardless of our own result the next day).
I found it very strange.

Take it all with a pinch of salt. Fuck em. I cant get my head around it all. To me its an inferior complex and wanting England to fail so they can go to bed happy only tells me what a sad life they have.
Both my parents are Irish and they always wanted England to do well if they were on the tv. This country has given them a good living, met many many friends and have contributed to the country so why would you want that country to fail?
The town is full of sweaty socks who constantly belittle this country but soon shut the fuck up when I ask "if its such a shit hole why are you still here?".
Footie is a game intended to unite people not bring out prejudices.

Fair play to you. As much as I've enjoyed our results against you I can't imagine how good at the next Euros if you qualify. Already guaranteed to get you in the group stage and it will be played at Wembley or Hampden (which is the better option obviously).

I consider myself an unpatriotic Englishman, but I always support England in sport, and GB in the Olympics etc. And was cheering us on in full force in all of our games this tournament.

It's more on the global or political front I feel unpatriotic, and embarrassed by England, some of the things we have done over the years makes me cringe (second only to America on the embarrassing front, imo). And whenever I've been travelling, the way other nationalities view England is quite interesting, we're quite a backwards and joyless country at times. I've always lived in England though, and do appreciate our humour, and manners, I just think we could conduct ourselves so much better, as one of the richest developed countries in the world. All of my Dad's side of the family is Irish or Northern Irish, and I feel more pride with their culture and achievements over England's.

Is it unpatriotic to be glad that people might be able to string more words together than "It's coming home" for everything?

I don't think we deserved to win last night.
