Well well it turns out my daughters landlord for her student house is none other than Lee Brown the Portsmouth left back!
Met him the other day, nice bloke. He's been doing really well last couple of seasons. Seems like a good wing back and just went to Portsmouth from Bristol.
If I see him again next week I'll ask him for the scoop on Chaplin! :)
All he will tell you next week is why he didn't sign!!!!

Mucca Mad Boys You asked to be corrected if your wrong about Collins. He scored 25 in 79 games playing in div. 1 just under 1 in 3 consistent with his career average good strike rate . If we got that guy like we could and should have done last year (local boy), that would meant business . Nearly 2 weeks ago I asked why we are waiting for Chaplin no nearer getting a replacement if you were the manager of a team would you want to let your 1st or 2nd scorer go so close to the season why do people on here think we will get a replacement now . I think we will have to go with want we have got . If we can cover the 28 goals don't know time will tell.

he added: “We’ll have to wait and see but the idea is that what we have to do is try to find someone who we can develop.

“It’s not going to be someone from up there who can come in and do it. That’s not the model.

“So we have got to try to do something to develop people.
That's another way of saying, get them in cheap to sell them to " maximise profits "

Which is what most lower-league clubs do (or at least try to). I have no problem with that model, but it is reliant on a consistently good scouting policy. I'm doubtful we have that just yet. It seems only five minutes ago Pressley and Mowbray both bemoaned the fact that we had no scouting database.

It's not just when we're in the lower - league's though is it, it's ALWAYS been that way.

Oh to have the same team from one season to the next.

Can't remember the last time that happened, must of been a long time ago, if at all.

We got promoted, it was obviously going to change.

The majority of the players are the same though aren't they?

I really do think it will be ok
Season ticket deadlines have passed at other clubs at our level so transfers of star players often happen between that deadline and the end of the window
Don't be surprised if we get another high profile loan from one of the top clubs
I think conversations have been going on but these players are in demand so a lot of i's have to be dotted and t's crossed
Hate to say it, but I don't think you need those last two apostrophes.

Fair enough on the James Collins stats. In retrospect, why would signing Collins have ‘meant business?’ He cost (about) £300k and McNulty scored more goals and in more games than Collins. Assuming we signed him, 300k is a lot out of the budget which meant we would’ve had less budget to play with — after signing Andreu, Robins more or less said the budget had been pushed very close to its maximum. Don’t get me wrong, he would’ve been a good player for us, but it wasn’t like he was better than McNulty... who was signed on a free.

On McNulty, he was sold before the first preseason game, which has given Robins plenty of time to figure out his options. Pretty early on, Chaplin was identified as that replacement — broke even before McNulty’s departure was confirmed. Even if the specifics aren’t entirely correct, it was established very quickly that he was identified by Robins’ as McNulty’s replacement.

If the Chaplin transfer is still in play, it’s well worth holding out for him, even if it means going down to the wire because for Robins’, that’s his guy. Robins must be sorting out alternatives if this deal falls through.

We will, and I believe are holding out for Chaplin, I know he’s getting games in pre-season friendliest but the bottom line is Kenny Jacket doesn’t rate him good enough for his team or suits his system of play, that’s his parogative as manager. Chaplin is and will only be a reserve at Pompey, so he will leave, either now for a fee or next season as a free agent for a small tribunal fee.

Surely the point wasn’t lost on you that I nor probably anyone else here knows...just like no one here scouted McNulty but left it to the guys in charge...

Well we'll just shut this place down while we all wait until the best decision is made shall we?

Silly usfor discussing our opinions on a football forum.

What a shit argument come on shmeee you’re better than that

Discuss who you think it might be, speculate, whatever you want. But for someone to bitch about it being a bad situation because we are only going to replace with “freebies” and they don’t see many around is a bit silly isn’t it given robins got McNulty for free and noone knew about him....

Yes, but how often does that happen? I'll be happy with whoever we sign because I trust Robins to get the right players, but let's not pretend the strikers we get free always turn good. It's very rare for what happened with McNulty.

There is nothing wrong with being annoyed/disappointed if we sell someone for circa £1.5m and replace them with a free.

If this drags on without a permanent signing and we start to look at loans does anyone know who's likely to be available? Obviously another Armstrong would be the hope rather than a Zavon Hines, Alex Nimely etc. I'd have thought somene like Ivan Toney from NUFC might be looking for football but does anyone have thoughts/speculation on others?

It also doesn't mean that a player with a fee will do it either, look at McDonald and Eastwood.

I'd much rather wait and see the player play a few games to see how decent they are rather than judge them instantly.

Fair enough if it's just about the price. I agree that doesn't matter, though how many of those freebies did we sign in the last week of the window?

McNulty signed early May, not in August. Pulling him out as an example of the sort of player you can get on a free at this stage isn't representative. If we wanted to do it for free we should've done it at the start of the window. Now we are likely going to have to pay and rely on clubs letting players like Chapin go.

It's just the "Hur dur there have been good frees and bad paid for players" line that keeps being trotted out with no regard for context that annoys me. That and that certain posters refuse to accept anyone can critise decisions the club makes becauae "the manager sees them every day in training" yet the same people will bitch about Mowbray and Thorns transfers.

If you've got a disagreement fine, just don't go "well I'm sure mother knows best" and think it's an all consuming winning argument.

If we have to pay a club to get their player, they are more likely to be a better player than someone who has been released. It isn't about judging a player, it's about being disappointed initially about replacing someone worth £1.5m with someone worth £0

So using your theory Biamou was better than McNulty as McNulty was released and Biamou was bought...

Players aren't always released because they are shit, see players like Ogogo and Brown who turned down deals to come to us and players like Fleck who turned down a contract with us and went to Sheff Utd.

It isn't about just randomly spending money for the sake of it, yes if we can get a player than Robins thinks will suit the system and there is a fee within our budget then go for it. If there is one on a free that will need a decent wage then go for that if he is going to be better off in the long run.

It was the same with Leon Clarke, people moaning that he was a freebie. Last season people wrote McNulty off and obsessed over James Collins because he was bought with a fee.

It isn't quite as straight forward as transfer out to be then spent on transfers in is it? There's also wages, agents fees etc.

Lmao, obviously not. I said 'more likely'. Yeah I know you don't need to bore me with the details, all I was saying originally is that is perfectly reasonable for some people to be disappointed with replacing him with a free. People who are still free agents with a week until the season starts, are likely now to be people who were released, not who have turned down a contract.

Erm, that is borne out by no evidence at all. Take the cases of Frederick Eastwood, Kevin Kyle and Leon McKenzie.

I don't doubt people would be disappointed, again the same as people were disappointed we got McNulty instead of James Collins because he wasn't a "name" with a pricetag.

There are also other clubs trying to get players in and will need them shipping out, see us getting rid of Stokes on a free.

More options than just splashing out money just for the sake of keeping people happy. If they are the best player for us then great but it doesn't mean it has to be a fee for them to be any good.

Yup. It doesn't preclude the free player being good, it doesn't stop a bad player being bought for lots if cash. But obviously the bigger the budget for a player you have, the more likely you end up with a better one.

Surely this is obvious?!? Where's the argument to be had?

It's more that it isn't guaranteed and shouldn't be done just for the sake of it to please the fans who will moan.

An indication this weekend regarding if Chaplin could be on the move or not is if he plays in whatever friendly Portsmouth might have.
