Leading on from the comments about playing Jordy out wide - is there another club out there that has so regularly played strikers on the wing as us over the last decade or so?

My observations of Biamou not only on Saturday he doesn't anticipate enough for me he watches where the ball goes and then reacts which half the time is too late....simple fact is we definitely need someone better to get anything out of this league!!
It has been said before and I will say it again, he wasn't really good enough last season and now we are in a higher league I doubt very much he will get significantly better if its goals we want he aint the answer !!

Strange game. I thought overall the players performed well but a couple mistakes late on meant we lost the game. Hiwula will get much better when fully fit and I want to see the fullbacks be used more in attack as well. Biamou must develop the knowledge of when and where to make his run. Rich bins’ should be were a little strange both in terms of their Ming and personnel.

Didn't think Biamou was terrible at all but this was exactly what I said. There's very rarely anticipation so when a ball is played through he has to react, change body position and move, so those fine lines with through balls are often missed

Not writing Max off but that sort of thing is difficult to teach

Max is great with his back to goal winning headers and flicking it on for others, good too see he hasn't gone back into his shell over the summer and is prepared to try the spectacular. He was isolated too often on Saturday though, a couple of times when Scunthorpe were attacking our midfield was sat just in front of the defence with Max alone surrounded by 4 defenders, you'd have to be a hell of a player to make anything out of that. McNulty said in his interview with Matty R how much he loved playing with Biamou as he does all the dirty work that the goalscorer needs. I think Hiwula/another will really appreciate it when they get an understanding going.

I don't think that we intended to play Hiwula wide, just a bit deeper than Max and slightly left of centre with Andreu right of centre with the idea being full backs overlapping to create width but a few times they didn't seem to want to attack the space so Hiwula ended up drifting there to pick the ball up. I actually thought it was a pretty good formation given our personal if played correctly.

Biamou doesn’t strike me as a player who can thrive up front on his own! Perhaps JCH might be more suited to it, but, I’m not sure of it. 4-4-2 is probably the best option for us with our personnel. However, a big caveat is where to play Andreu in that system because he’d probably have to play out wide which probably won’t optimise his performance. Perhaps the new striker will be better suited to a quick passing game on his own. If Robins’ last tenure with us in L1 is anything to go by, we’ll play a quick passing game so a big striker not completely necessary in that lone striker role.

I thought Mason looked very good down the left with a few great crosses, a few people saying Doyle was poor but i think he stepped up his game today to match Ogogo and they worked well together.
I thought Doyle was miles off the pace in the first half and improved on the ball in the 2nd half. Out of possession the game bypassed him a lot of the time - Scunthorpe moved the ball too quickly and so he barely made a 50/50 tackle all game, got caught too high up the pitch a couple of times without being able to get back (watch him for the first goal). In our possession he didn't have the pace to consistently get into the gaps to show for easy passes when the pressure was on and I thought he was part of the reason Mason gave the ball away a few times early as Doyle wasn't in position for the natural 45 degree pass forward. He improved in the 2nd half as the space opened up more and his passing was much improved as he was moving the ball on (and forward) much quicker. Will be interesting to see if he's able to adapt but I don't think you can carry a midfielder in L1 just for the leadership he brings, especially if we ever go back to a 4-4-2.

I'd slot Kelly into Doyle's position when fit, as Ogogo looked comfortable going to box to box. As long as I didn't have to tell Doyle he's dropped of course :p

Yup Doyle didn't get near them first half to make a tackle

Also Biamou makes poor LONE striker runs. Those that don't see it have poor reading of the game or are just bias

So we're writing off last season's player of the year after one game then? In the same way as it's not ok to with the kids and new signings, Doyle will also be lacking match fitness and will get sharper I'm certain.

Max was ok Saturday and if a partner hit the target his failings are not highlighted as much. I still believe we have a better natural finisher than all of the ones we're looking at in Ponti, but he seems to be down the list so clearly the coaches don't view him as I do and I have to accept they probably know more than me having seen him in training every day, but I'm sure he'd have scored a couple on Saturday.

If we can forget that Russell Slade tried it, I'd quite like to try 3 at the back (Davies, Willis, Hyam) and allow Bayliss to play more centrally. It would also help the lack of height and raw defending attributes of our full backs. Whatever the system though we still need someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

I'm not writing him off, just stating my views on his performance on Saturday and said it will be interesting to see if he can adapt. There's a difference between fitness and speed. Doyle could run all day, no doubt, but the quality of Scunthorpe on the ball vs anything we faced last year was visible and I felt it exposed those aging legs first half - there was loads more first time passing and for a big team they had some fast players too. He was left chasing his tail in a 15 yard circle at times.

IF it does turn out that he hasn't got the legs to keep up with the pace of L1 then it's going to be interesting how it gets handled. Doyle is captain and a fierce competitor and won't be easy to bench which i think will end up being a pivotal part of the season (assuming we sort out the striker situation). My personal view is that he would be better coming on in the last 30 mins of games to focus the minds of our kids and help us see games out. Not sure we'd have lost yesterday if he was coming on fresh after 60 minutes.
