The burqa is a barrier that prevents social integration, how many people can say they've had a friendly chat with a woman wearing one?
How can a women wearing a burqa participate in society, by accepting the burqa we are tacitly accepting deepening ethnic and cultural divisions in society.
I've no idea how a teacher, dentist or doctor is supposed to do their job when confronted by a patient or parent that wears such clothing.
More disturbingly I think it is true to say some muslim men regard women who don't cover up as 'fair game' to assault sexually, because they're seen as whores. Also I think it is true to say in communities where a burqa is more common incidents of wife beating are high, who is going to find out the evidence is covered up?
Finally there has been a lot of talk about the freedom not to be offended, I don't know if I'm in a minority but I am rather offended by burqa's and other overt religious symbology.
My preference is to place restrictions on wearing burqa's. I think if action is not taken then religion will regain great power in the country and frankly in my opinion that will have a far far worse outcome than Brexit.

Saying they look like letter boxes is an old joke. Laughed the first few times. It’s the ex foreign secretary and PM wannabe that is the problem. It’s not his brief to take the piss out of a minority religion. It is Rowan Atkinson‘s job. Two different things. After meeting with Bannon he starts pushing how far he can go.
That is more sinister than the actual remark.

He's not wrong that he's going for the populist vote... although tbf(?) to good old Boris, he's always been known for being a little inept / pithy / wankerish / blunt with words, on whatever the subject. He's no racist, he's equally poor at the comedy on all subjects - he's like a poor man's Prince Philip.
It does show why he won't ever be PM though. The Conservative Party won't trust him as even after a spell as foreign secretary, he's still showing an inability to show statesmanlike behaviour. If he were a stand-up comic all well and good, but as a politician, he needs to be a little more diplomatic... especially as this whole debate misses the thrust of his article anyway, that people *should* be free to wear what they want! He's managed to make his own point be spactacularly missed in the main.

Do you know that Bannon is setting up a European office with the intent of weakening, not destroying,the EU? Yes. When he was in Hanover at an event I was at, he referred to Helmut Kohl as Herr Reichskanzler in his speech. The last Reichskanzler being Adolf Hitler. He speaks fluent German and so no one knew whether that was deliberate or not.

Bannon has funds and has opened an office in Brussels. He is not doing that to promote tolerance and European unity. His campaign will be based on Breitbart style lies and disinformation as it has been successful for him up until now. He is recruiting BTW.

We all know BJ is a buffoon albeit probably a calculating buffoon. But we must not let mockery of religion be conflated with racism. Religion hates being undermined by satire and mockery and it's one of the few weapons we have left as rationalists. Tony Blair's promotion of faith schools probably means we lose a little bit of hope that education will ultimately win out against religious indoctrination of the young so we need to make sure that religion does not have a special case when it comes to not being offended. I remember growing up watching Dave Allen poke fun at the catholic church (especially the garb and rituals) and even recently Charlie Brooker's video of the pope 'snatching a child' and laughing. Nobody got killed as far as I remember by religious fanatics. I seem to remember some bishops being upset by 'The Life Of Brian' but again nobody got killed.

I don't need to tell you what this religion is that finds non-belief so offensive that it want to kill people like me. This is why I am always afraid of religion and I don't mind admitting to Islamophobia in the true sense of the word. I am also scared of fundamentalist Christians so this is not about race.

I Don't like any of the hierarchical bullshit religions. I've just read a book about the Spanish civil war and you wouldn't believe the culpability of the Catholic church in the mass murder of opponents on the Republican side. They were happy to let Franco's butchers murder at will , whilst the socialist side was looking to divvy up some of their ill gotten wealth. The Pope sent personal telegrams of congratulations.

If someone said it down the pub I'd just think it an unfunny joke and move on but you want the, until recently, foreign secretary to have a bit more gravitas and so should be held to account. You can imagine the outrage if a prominent Labour MP was mocking the kippah.
Captain Breitbart and others were into it.
I never quoted Breitbart, just looked to see where stories were coming from. Breitbart was made big by Bannon. His name keeps popping up all over the place now that he is making a career in Europe.

Yes, but she was told she couldn’t wear religious symbols. Which is right, because if that is allowed then we get all the Niquab wearers saying if she can wear a cross to work we can be veiled. I would say no religious garb at work. Applies to everyone.
