Always had a fixation with it. Whenever I see CCFC go through a rocky patch. I always wonder if we switched to 442 and played attacking footy would we do better?

................Burge............
Grimmer Willis Hyam Mason
Thomas Doyle Baylis Shipley
...JCH & (Andreu, JP or Hiwalu)

Eventually Jones for Shipley and
Allassani alongside JCH

Not sure why but I always wish we would play a straight 442 and let the forwards use their intelligence to work out how best to interlink on the merits of their strengths

Same team i would i line up with, great selection, very attacking and we would score goals with maybe Chaplin added who knows, but definitely 4 4 2 for me.

I seem to remember during the Hughes era we played a lot of 4-5-1/4-3-3 with strikers out wide which never worked.

Might also encourage the full backs to attack as they’ll have cover. One thing about this season has been the lack of attack’s from the full backs over lapping. We scored Saturday from a cross from Mason...it’ll make a difference

Oh for a team like that now, although Whelan for me was always a back-up striker and Froggatt would be LW.

Shaw should never have been more than a back-up either. Not quick, not tall or muscular, but reasonably decent positional sense to be a nuisance jockeying backwards trying to hold up play while other people got back. Had an annoying tendency to do that all the way from the halfway line and then decide to put a tackle in just inside the penalty area. Largely had the career he did here because he was a nice guy who didn't rock the boat.

As for 4-4-2 I don't think we should be fixated on it, but with the players we have at the moment it would seem the best bet to get the most out of them bar maybe Andreu who could be one of the two up front or an alternative to Bayliss.

The thing about being fixated with a system is when people work it out you struggle - that's why so many managers start to see things going wrong and can't fix it. We've had it ourselves with managers who can't coach beyond their favourite system. By all means use it as much as possible but when it's not working you need a Plan B, and preferably C as well. Having a variety of systems you can use makes it harder for the opposition to know how to set up against you.

I agree. Though in reality, 451, 433 and 4231 are all variants of 442, so much so that your number 10 pushing up forward creates that straight away. It's the same thing but for a very subtle difference.

Yes that number 10 role slightly changing still counts as a 442 for me

We were basically this shape last year when Kelly cam back from injury
Puts a lot on the single holding midfielder though.
Did we buy Andreu without resizing that the arrival of Bayliss was imminent?

For me it’s gotta be either Bayliss or Andreu not both when Kelly is back

The arrival of Bayliss only really happened because of injuries.

Yeah, it was after Kelly got injured & he didn’t have a lot of options left. He felt Bayliss was ready but was advised against it by his team. He went with it & the rest is history.

Watched some of the highlights of Thomas, Bayliss running forward together at Gillingham and thought if these two get on the same wavelength they are going to tear a hole in a lot of teams.

So the same as we played on Saturday then?

Kind of yes I love the idea of one proper holding midfielder. One creative midfielder.
Two proper wingers.
The only variation been the number 10 having flexibility.
So the only difference is the actual players fitting the system

....Didn't we play a narrow 442 on Sat?

Andreu slightly behind JCH.

I don't really care what the formation is tbh, I just want us to play decent football that doesn't involve hopeless punts forward from defence or "hitting the channels".

So simple but doubt that team ever took the field.

Konjic was a major sicknote and McAllister’ injury really improved the team. Whelan was played out of position and Hadji didn’t arrive til after the 1998 World Cup by which time Chippo was also here.

The best era 442 was more like:-
Hedman
Nilsson Breen Williams Burrows
Telfer Boateng Soltvedt Whelan
Dublin Huckerby

Subs included Shaw, Moldovan, Haworth (!) and Gavin Strachan

Our best players right now are midfielders. Bayliss and Andreu are firmly established as two of our best midfielders. With JCH playing well on his own, we should stick with the team from the Gillingham game, which has probably been our best performance (not result) so far.

Otherwise, a 4-4-2 will be without natural wingers because at least one of Andreu and Bayliss will be pushed out into the wider areas. I can certainly see Bayliss and Ogogo being our main CM partnership later on in he season with Jones and Andreu our wide.

If we were to sign Chaplin, we’d probably switch to 4-4-2. With only JCH staking a claim for a starting berth up front, we should stick to 4-2-3-1 for the time being.

I must have stumbled into a parallel universe. We played 4-4-2 on Saturday.

:emoji_ballot_box_with_check: Weird New Account who strangely posts like they know more than a new user
:emoji_ballot_box_with_check: Clearly has no idea that we did actually play 4-4-2 at the weekend
:emoji_ballot_box_with_check: Trying way too hard to post a lot to blend in
