Should of nicked it late and thomas and chaplins chances earlier in the half as well should of scored but burge also kept us in it. Doyle miles off it against the better teams in this league now for me

Burge 8 Two fantastic saves. Maybe set up the wall a bit wrong for the free kick that hit the bar.
Brown 6 Not really on long enough to have a good or bad game
Willis 7 Did well in the centre and coped well when pushed out into unfavoured RB spot
Hyam 7 Unlucky to be booked early on but dealt well with them
Sterling 7 Decent game. OK defensively and did very well to chase down and cross for the goal
Thomas 6 Typical Thomas - looked Ok when on the ball but no final product
Shipley 5 Largely anonymous but positioned himself well to cover Sterling. Some poor passing
Doyle 5 Poor passing at times, especially for their goal. Poor set pieces
Bayliss 5 Tried too hard. Dribbled and lost the ball too often and missed chances to pass to players in good positions
JCH 8 MOTM. Fought for the ball, won a lot of headers, got some free kicks and scored.
Chaplin 5 Two absolutely glaring misses. Would've been a four but he did make some decent runs.

Davies 7 Came on, got his on things. Solid enough.
Jones 6 Didn't make an impact but did his defensive duties well enough

Burge 9 some big big saves and off his line well too

Sterling 8 brilliant performance at left back. Good defensively and assisted goal

Hyam 7

Willis 8 adjusted to right back well

Davies 7 came in and was solid

Doyle 4 poor today

Bayliss 5 needs to start releasing ball st right time after hard work done

Thomas 6.5 caused them problems

Shipley 4 did nothing bad did nothing good. Did nothing.

Jch 9 best performance yet

Chaplin 6 bad miss. But always in right positions for me. Will be a good partnership in long run.

Jones 6 tried defensively and nearly helped us score a winner

Burge 9 - few great saves to keep it level

Willis 6.5 - didn’t have a bad game and had to adapt moving to right back, and occasionally kept forgetting and finding himself too narrow.

Hyam 7.5 - really decent defender at this level. Good in the air, good positionally, good with the ball. Carries on like this and he’ll become a target for championship clubs

Davies 7 - no nonsense solid performance

Sterling 8 - was having a good game before the assist, solid defensively and was the most attacking I’ve seen him. We need more of this Sterling

Shipley 5 - game passed him by, might seem harsh but at this stage I don’t think he looks up to league one

Doyle 4 - really poor today. Gave the ball away far too often and looked behind the game

Bayliss 6 - some lovely bits, but too often made the wrong decision

Thomas 7 - still very Ryan Kent. Great outlet and exciting to watch but final ball/shot not there yet

JCH 9 - deserved goal, absolutely immense today. Put himself about, won everything and looked a goal threat

Chaplin 6.5 - two big chances missed but overall play was decent. I think people are getting on his back too quickly, I think he’s come good.

Bayliss has some lovely bits?

Are his lovely bits as lovely as how lovely CC4L thinks Conor Chaplin is?

Burge 8 Couple of important saves at crucial times. What was more impressive was he could have easily spilt one of them but held on firmly.
Sterling 7 Adapted well at left back and had a hand in the goal with good persistence. A great step forward from last week.
Brown 5 Not on long enough really.
Hyam 7 Calm, assured and composed, hope he stays fit as has been a real plus in defence.
Willis 6 Usual from him that we expect and slotted in at right back we’ll to cover. Couple of times caught out though in the 2nd half.
Doyle 5 Lost the battle today against Cattermole who outshone him. Too many wayward passes.
Bayliss 6 Came alive more in the 2nd half but does too much sometimes instead of releasing it.
Shipley 5 Needs to start impressing a bit more or may well find himself slipping down the pecking order. Hasn’t really impressed this season and maybe now punching above his weight?
Thomas 6 Again ok but no end product.
Chaplin 6 Got to finish at least one of them chances. Overall game and link up play decent though.
JCH 8 Man of the match for me and a great showing from him. Something similar to when we played Brighton last year in the cup. Funny enough I said to my son that he was having a great game and deserved a goal and then he popped up.

Subs Davies 7 Solid as usual from him and nearly got on the score sheet aswell.
Jones 6 A couple of good runs in the short time he was on.

Good game of football and a draw was probably about right for both.

Think Bayliss marks are a bi low on here most of our good stuff came from him

He lost possession a lot and was culpable for the goal

He lost possession a lot and was culpable for the goal

I’ll give you he sometime soon loses it in our own half but he is normally loses it trying something that if comes off will beat a man and get an attack going rather than just losing it going nowhere

Not having was was his fault for goal, not seen it back but didn’t Doyle give the ball away with a bad pass sterling let the guy cross it and Thomas was behind Cattermole and let him run into the area.

Burge 8 a few important stops
Sterling 7 have we found a new position for the lad, best I’ve seen him play
Hyam 7
Willis 6
Brown 5
Bayliss 6
Doyle 6
Shipley 6
Thomas 6
Jch 9 beast today, no defender in this league can handle him on today’s showing
Chaplin 6 looks technically good and intelligent but is not looking like the natural finisher we were told

Davies 6
Jones 6

Bayliss is another one , has immense potential but needs to engage his brain , this is what separates players like bayliss and james Maddison and he must address it if he wants to reach those levels , Maddison always releases and played simple , bayliss adds that to his game (the simple ball)he will be a cracking player

Burge - 9. Great performance today.
Sterling - 7. Best game yet, perseverance and a bit of quality got him an assist.
Brown - 6. Not on long but did nothing wrong.
Willis - 7. Did well at right back, good versatility.
Hyam - 7. Solid performance throughout.
Thomas - 6. Put himself about well, but still not enough end product going forward.
Shipley - 5. Anonymous for much of the game but did provide a few nice touches.
Bayliss - 6. Got the feeling he was trying to impress the Sky pundits... poor decision making at times.
Doyle - 5. Not a good performance, would have subbed him off for Kelly.
JCH - 9. Fantastic today, deserved his goal. Got pissed off when their player went down easily and seemed to raise his game a level after.
Chaplin - 5. Got to take at least one of those chances, not panicking yet but doesn't seem to yet be the player we hoped for. Still young and will get better with a goal, I'm sure.

Davies - 7. Did nothing wrong defensively.
Jones - 6. Great to see him back, didn't have much opportunity to get forward but a promising return.

Today was my first game of the season, and I was impressed with the performance, a draw was a fair result but we really should've won it at the death. As for my marks:

Burge, 8 - made some excellent saves to keep us in the game
Sterling, 7 - went into this game with a preconception that he was a liability, he was the opposite and coped well at LB, getting an assist too
Willis, 7 - solid, even if his attributes aren't best suited to RB
Hyam, 7 - really assured performance
Brown, 6 - neutral, went off too early to make a comment
Thomas, 6 - provided an outlet but no end product, Jones looked a lot more threatening in his cameo
Bayliss, 7 - some quality touches, faded a bit in the first half after a bright start. But, offers real get forward from CM
Doyle, 7 - I don't get the criticism directed toward him in this game, there was a period in the 2nd half where he got the ball in the boxes for two chances which was important for momentum
Shipley, 6 - steady, workmanlike performance and he offers equilibrium across our midfield
Chaplin, 7 - got into good scoring positions, but the execution was well off today, he scuffed a really good chance before his clanger at the end of the game. Still, played well
JCH, 9 - MOTM with a very good target man performance, linked well with Chaplin and topped it off with a well-taken goal.

Subs

Davies, 7 - solid defensively, wins everything in the air and gets his foot on any loose balls
Jones, 7 - unusually high given his 20m cameo, but there were glimpses of a real outlet we've missed on the right-hand side epitomised with that late Bayliss chance. He also defended surprisingly well too

Never been vocally supportive of JCH but he deserves his plaudits today. Particularly second half.
Excellent today if he could play like that every week he would be good enough for championship. I hope he does but 1 goal in 19 games is very poor from a striker

JCH stats were on sky during the match yesterday

he's scored 2 this season. (edit - see what you mean, 1 in 19 before yesterday).

Him and Chaplin were particularly good at working as a pair when Sunderland were in possession to put pressure on their back line.

Really disappointed with the missed chances from Chaplin but I there are some promising signs that this pairing could flourish.

In the end Scumderlands defence were backing off JCH almost scared of him, special mention for Burge also he gets enough stick on here so lets laud his performance and saves yesterday

Burge 9 - 2 great saves, kept the 1 point in the bag
Willis 7 - did well at rb even when blowing at the end
Davies 7 - solid considering being chucked in
Hyam 7- solid
Sterling 8 - was singled out by sunderland from start but coped well and good assist
Doyle 6 - thought he had a poor game, cattermole came out on top, needs a rest?
Bayliss 7 - couple of forward flurries and can tell he's got class
Thomas 7 - again looked dangerous but needs end product
Shipley 6 - no where near as bad as some suggesting
JCH 9 - best game I've seen from him. Good work rate and good finish
Chaplin 6 - poor, May be a confidence thing but not sure he'll get better chances than he did today

Cracking game and overall performance though and happy with a point

Burge 9 - People need to stay off his back now. Proved he is improving. Big asset
Willis 7 - Mr Dependable wherever you put him
Hyam 8 - This lad is class. Most intelligent centre half we have had in years.
Davies 7 - Blocked everything, strong shout to start Tuesday
Sterling 7 - Much improved. Seemed more aggresive
Shipley 6 - Did nothing wrong, but not anything spectacular. All i know is; the team plays better when he starts.
Doyle 6 - Couple of good through balls. Did ok
Bayliss 6 - Similar to Doyle really
Thomas 5 - Not my sort of player, runs a lot, but with no end product
Gave the goal away by not tracking Cattermole who had pulled out into his channel to score. Prefer Jones back in.
JCH 10 - Man mountain. Bullied their back four, tested the keeper from range a good few times, good awareness and lay offs, cool finish for the goal.
Chaplin 5 - Looks lively, good movement but lacking composure. I think he will do a McNulty, the floodgates will open when he gains confidence...

Jones 6 - Tracked back well to make a tackle. Put two intelligent through balls in. He is better than Thomas

Burge 8- Much of what has been said before, some crucial saves to keep us in the game. Just wish he could be like that most weeks.
Willis 6- Maybe a bit harsh as he was moved to RB early on, but he got caught out too many times down our right and found himself drifting in too often. Fairly solid otherwise.
Hyam 7.5- Sturdy and dependable as always.
Davies 7- Solid. Did what he had to do.
Sterling 7- Definitely the best game I’ve seen of his so far. More of this please.
Doyle 5- Gave the ball away far too often and looked off the pace. Cattermole won the battle.
Bayliss 6.5- Has good spells where he drove us forward but then went missing for parts of the game.
Thomas 6- The same every week, flatters to deceive. Exciting player but NO END PRODUCT. Ryan Kent 2.0.
Shipley 5- Can’t see what he brings to the team, really slow and gets beaten far too easily. Maybe he does things that us as fans don’t see. It looks like he’d found his level at league 2.
Jones 7- Based on his 15 minute cameo you could already see that he’s going to add something this season. In for Thomas when he’s 100% match fit.
Chaplin 6- Overall play was good but he has to finish one of them chances. Looks like a McNulty situation, once he gets one he’ll be off.
JCH 9- My MOTM. Won everything in the air and they were scared to challenge him towards the end. Deservedly got his goal and hopefully he consistently produces that type of performance from now on. That performance shows that he is capable, it’s just a case of if his attitude is like that every week.
