You're kidding yourself if you don't think Sterling was anything but extremely poor in our first 6 games or so, but fair do's to the lad he looks a different player right now. Sticking with him now looks a masterstroke on Robin's part, but it would have been interesting if he would have done so if Grimmer had been available after the Bristol Rovers game. The assist in the following game against Sunderland seems to have transformed Sterling's confidence and from then on he seems more like the player we hoped he would be. He is noticeably more involved in our build up play now and I like how he times his forward runs, while his final delivery is also becoming increasingly impressive.

He had a couple of bad games. Then there were games he did ok yet still got slated. Very rarely extremely poor. Maybe just 1 game I would say

I’d say he’s turned the corner. He was dreadful for 6 games and looked nowhere near professional football but since the Sunderland game he’s improved game on game. Fair play to Robins for sticking with him.

Jeez. He is an 18 year old kid who has to make the adjustment from u20 football to a more physical, competitive type of football.
You can see the quality and potential he has - just taking little time to settle. Sure by end of season people will be calling one of the players of the season.

The reality is - like clarke Harris - he will have to work twice as hard to win fans over due to a “cult hero” he’s replacing - so will always be accused of not putting a shift in blah blah
I don’t mind Grimmer and it’s unfortunate for him but defensively he’s always been suspect
I suspect grimmer will depart in January

So he's gone from nowhere near professional football to a key first team player in just 2 or 3 weeks?
Robins is good, but I had no idea he was THAT good.

Don't think Grimmer was dropped as such, MR mentioned previously that he needed some extra time to rest after playing virtually every game last season (circa 50), hence why Sterling started and Grimmer then came back in.

I agree. It's undeniable that he was extremely poor in the first few games of the season. But what people have failed to touch on is a few select posters on SBT were claiming that he was simply a poor player (rather than a player going through a rough patch) and that age wasn't an excuse. For instance, I remember one poster stating that his age cannot be brought into the debate of his ability simply with the response that if he was good enough then he's old enough. Whilst in theory that is true, I find the comment beyond the realms of old fashioned. At the end of the day Sterling is 18 years old, has been thrown into first team football straight away, it's probably the first time he's left London for a period of time and he's playing with a brand new crop of players.
There are a host of variables that point to why he went through a poor spell but many (including myself at times) were guilty of writing him off too soon. Perhaps Grimmer suffering an injury at the Oxford game was a blessing because although Grimmer is a solid player, Sterling has the potential to become a serious threat within the team. Like you said his forward runs are extremely effective - something I find frustrating when watching Grimmer as IMO his forward runs are more often than not in fact ineffective.

Our midfield/forward signings seem to be made on base attributes combined with fitting a certain personal profile rather than going after established players who will be direct upgrades in various positions. Robins is then retraining them into the positions he wants them or developing the specific missing attributes he wants them to have.
Think a lot of work is going on with individuals behind the scenes to retrain/develop them into what Robins wants from his team - Bakayoko mentioned in his interview after Charlton the work he's been doing on anticipation and running in behind, Robins has mentioned Kelly and Ogogo being asked to play roles that are not their natural game. Bayliss is clearly being developed into more of an all round central midfielder than just the attacking player we saw last year, know for sure Biamou was re-trained for that target man role and suspect JCH is also being asked to play a different role than he has in the past.
It goes some way to explaining why a few of our signings raised eyebrows at the time, when the immediate need for those players was not always clear. If players are under so much individual development too it may also be contributing to this stuttering pattern we're seeing over the last 2 seasons with a team that takes 2 steps forward and 1 step back before finishing strongly.
Really excited by the squad this year and pleased that things seem to be coming together earlier than last year - seen absolutely nothing to fear in this division so far and we should be aiming at autos.

It is going to be a long hard season, and if we have genuine aspirations to kick on from last season we need to have a squad where the next man up can do a job.
I would much rather be stacked all over than having to bring in Peter Ramage and Darius Henderson. The spirit around the squad appears to be improving week on week and it will be Robins job to keep the back ups happy but I would rather have Ogogo, Kelly Bakayoko chomping at the bit for their opportunity than the aforementioned and Martin Lorentzon when the times get tough in Jan/Feb.

At its worst Sterling’s defensive play was no worse than Grimmers. He has now settled and has started to show he can get forward as well.
Expect him to fall away at some stage, then come again before the end of the season.

His contract expires at the end of the season doesn’t it? He’s unlikely injuries apart to feature at all and that suggests he won’t be offered a new deal

Quite a few on here were saying to give it time and that you can't just judge players and dismiss them after just a few games.
A lot were doing just that though and Sterling was written off as an awful addition to the squad.
Sometimes players do take time to get used to systems and do take time to adjust and new squads do take time to gel.
A few weeks back many were saying Sterling was a bad signing, as was Brown, Bakayoko and Hiwula.
Are we now saying any of them are bad signings?
Think the only doubts being bandied about now are on Ogogo, but he has hardly played yet anyway.
Hopefully we as fans will learn from this.
But I doubt it.
Will you stop knee jerk reactions after a few wins by any chance?

Our good run of form coincided with Streling hitting form and our bad run since he has been out with injury. We need him back and firing quickly, just hope it don't take him 2 months to get up to speed again.

Davies has been great with helping attacking set plays with the headers he won for us, whilst he was playing lot's of our goals came from corners etc where he caused disruption. So yes another big miss, at least he seems to be on the way back after coming on in the last game.

trouble with Grimmer he expects his colleagues to cover whe he breaks forward and when he looks back he sees them picking their arses no where near Grimmers back line spot and therefore has to run back like a lunatic to try and recover it! which he does in the first 45 minutes but he is bolloxed second half and gets caught out
