They hit the bar, went just wide and then the goal mouth scramble. A goal was coming for them.

Re-read my post, it explicitly says they finished the final 20m well. Besides that, we limited them to mostly nothing long range chances. They fed off our mistakes.

That winning goal was superb finish, right in the corner, 8/10 times a L1 RB misses that.

Youre being apocalyptic about this game, it really wasn’t that bad. Going forward, we could’ve scored 1-2 more than we did. This said, we gifted them two goals. Thompson seemed to obstruct the GK for the first and his header for second was poor. He is a good defender, but it’s pretty clear that he is not a fullback and if Sterling or Grimmer is fit, they should start.

Thompson did okay, the young lad is a centre back playing right back. As a CB myself I hate being put at full back, positional sense is completely different and it’s a different game out there. He should’ve met the ball for their second before attempting the header back. Even if he got a better head on it not sure Burge would’ve got there as his positioning didn’t seem the best. As he’s playing it clearly proves grimmer isn’t fit, I had fans near me booing Thompson after the goal, which were the same group who tried to get on the pitch.

tbf I was not all that bothered about the FA Cup. We are a league higher and just finding our way now and it looks like we can go have a go at a successive promotion. The last thing we need is another cup competition in my view. Picking up a defeat now can be turned into a positive as we have been unbeaten in 7. Sooner or later a defeat comes along. So pleased it's not 3 points we have lost. The team was rotated and that has affected the performance overall and again that can be a positive when you see the same side that has been doing so well restored next week end.
I think the Checkertrade is another game for tinkering with the line up and I expect wholesale changes for that one.
I was surprised Kelly was not given a game today and must assume he is injured. Also surprised he did not bring Bakayko on and I also think Jones is still some way off before starting.
The disappointment today is in the way we got back to 2-2 and then ended losing. Other than that I just see it as a first defeat in 8 games and no points were at stake.

Even through the whole match, we didn't really test their keeper. Thomas goal should have really been saved.

In the first half we probably could have scored more if people had shot rather than doing some weird heavy touch to lose it which looked to be the new trend.

I can't see how people can be annoyed at Leahy and their other players. They played the game.

When he was down our end he had about 15 city fans over the barrier in his face pretty much touching him. We had fans going after their goalie after we scored.

If I was playing and scored a winner against a team after the fans had been like that I would have run the full length of the stand cupping my ear

Confession time, i haven't given todays game much attention, maybe it's my age but i can't really get excited about the f.a cup until round 3. Disappointing to go out but the league has priority, back to the league next week, 3 points and today will be forgotten.
I’m with you. The F..A. Cup used to be like christmas but means F A the last few years

What's a shirter?

Someone on here, I can’t remeber his name, thought he was a right old football hooligan and taught us all that a shirter is someone who doesn’t pop stone island clobber on ready for a man cuddle and wears ‘colours’ to the game.

They didn’t test Burge in the first half. We gifted them two goals, which is criminal. Our first was a gift too. Shipley, JCH and Hiwula all had decent chances and the latter, as well as Thomas were guilty of trying to take too many touches in good positions.

We had 7 corners to 1, more shots on target (they had more shots overall but some of them were v wild). We generally created the better chances with the exception of the last 20 minutes. Our defending let us down unfortunately.

Remember, despite being in bad form, Walsall are still 11th in the league and are no mugs.

Both our goals were gifts to be fair.

They had more than 1 corner didn't they?

Thomas' goal wasn't a gift at all and whilst his shot was not powerful, was well placed. The BBC description of it as 'excellent' is probably giving it too much credit, you're certainly doing a disservice to Thomas. Having read a report from a Walsall source, they don't seem to think it was a 'gift' as you do.

With all due respect, you're being emotional in your analysis. Having read Robins' post-match comments, he's given a fair assessment of proceedings. We had 3 good chances before they went 1-0 up and we really did gift them that 2-0 lead. You simply can't do that and expect to win games, one goal is bad enough. Today, you couldn't fault our attacking, we scored 2 and really should've scored more. Our defending was the issue and our substitutions, whilst positive and the right decisions, didn't have the desired effect going into the last 20.

We shouldn't be angry at this performance, it was an entertaining game, we came back to level it and unfortunately, we've lost it to a worthy winner. If it was a league game we probably would've settled for a draw which would be a good result given the circumstances. It's doubtful that either team wanted a replay.

It was a gift, the keeper should have done so much better with it. If it was our keeper we would be annoyed.

I'm just being honest. We took our most threatening players off, did our best to give them a win.

You could fault our attacking, we had an awful touch and if we had shot we would have scored more. Shipley put a good chance wide, jch had a heavy touch for another one.

Hiwula had more chances and looked more threatening than Thomas today, after all, his goal was a 'gift' apparently...

JCH played well, won a lot aerially, linked up really well and got a goal and if his first chance was on his left foot, it's odds-on he scores. It wasn't perfect and I've previously said our front 4 tried to take 1 too many touches in the final third. Had we defended properly and won this game, we'd all be hailing the performances from our players. That's the fickle nature of football fans. Result aside, this was a good game and there are certainly positives to take away from today.

Just reading the bbc match report-

Was it really that bad? “Abandon”

Walsall survived a Coventry fightback to triumph 3-2 in a pulsating FA Cup derby marred by a pitch invasion and bottle-throwing incident.

Referee Thomas Bramall threatened to abandon the game after Coventry fans invaded the pitch and a bottle was thrown following Luke Thomas' superb equaliser for the Sky Blues.”

From a player safety point of view you could have understood it then.

More shots off and on target 7-1 corners, double the number of free kicks against us rather than for us

I think the negative marks are too harsh

I say how it is every game whether good or bad. Thompson was shocking sadly.

The changes were completely wrong, they did up their game as they wanted to win and it showed. We didn't want it enough and took off our biggest threat and left Shipley on.

Jones for Thomas killed any threat we had, we then resorted to long balls to jch who had nobody close to him.

The changes for me were wrong too today but if we’d of lost the game with Bayliss and JJ still sat on the bench many on here would be in meltdown mode as people would of seen them as match winners with the game at 2-2.

JJ and Bayliss were completely anonymous and didn’t get into the game in the slightest.

'Colours?'

Isn't that racist?

I didn’t bother going today as choose the League game against this one instead as had a game myself. Must say I fully expected us to win and was disappointed seeing the result at full time. Still, I think we would all swap it if it means 3 points in the League game.

Usually when I go to games i seem to find myself surrounded by the worst of our fans. Was a nice surprise to be in with a good crowd today but so disappointed by the antics of those on the pitch at 2-2. Frankly it’s absolutely embarrassing. Getting on the pitch to draw level with walsall in the first round of the FA Cup. I’d be taking the piss out of any of my mates’ teams if they did that. Another Neanderthal decided to react aggressively to a pleasant enough chap who pointed out the toilets weren’t for smoking and there were plenty of young kids in there. I know when you take that many fans anywhere there are going to be a handful of cretins, but there were far too many on the pitch today
