I drink.

I smoke.

I binge eat.

Not properly exercised for nearly 3 years. Had an accident where I got bad nerve and muscle damage to my left arm. But at the time I was counted as seriously overweight. Have lost 2 1/2 stone. Only 16 stone now. Just right for height/build. But officially still overweight. Have had several strength tests because of injuries. Consultant checked right arm. Thought his equipment was broke. Right arm over 160% of the strength it should have for my age.

Just had a full medical at work. Only problem they could find is my left eye is slightly less than 20/20 and my hearing in my left ear is slightly below where it should be.

I am now 50. I have seriously abused my body for most of my life. I have been very lucky. But I have had kids for over 30 years so far. Keeping up with them helps. My job keeps me on my feet. And I only stopped boxing when I had my accident. The young lads.....not young if you are half my age....always wanted to get in with the old fat bloke. Our trainer would put the cocky ones in with me. It surprised them how unfit I looked but fitness wasn't a problem. Now I have lost the weight I look fitter but have become less fit.

I am still 21 in the head. But the years are starting to catch up with me. New injuries don't go away as quickly and I can feel some old ones. My knees click when I stand up. But not bad considering.

And my hair has now started to get some grey streaks :woot:

After my health scare this time last year i am 2 stone lighter, fitter, less stressed, happier. I took it as a kick up the backside and did something about it. Not obsessive about it, i have a healthy diet but still treat myself to the bad things when i choose (just not as often). I enjoy what i eat . Only drink at weekends but thats not a new thing, even then if i choose not to at weekends then am happy with that. I wasn't that unfit before, walked plenty but got tired easily, i was too stressed. I walk the dog every day and go to the gym twice a week, i am less stressed. The last assessment i had put my fitness 20% above average for my age.

Yes i am doing ok, but what drives me on is two things (1) i feel good about myself and (2) i dont want to put my wife and kids through that again.

Not going to preach about doing this or that though - we make our own choices - other than to say the older you get make sure you get yourself checked properly and regularly

I very rarely drink, don’t smoke, I exercise 3 days a week but on Friday just gone ended up at Glenfield hospital as had really bad chest pains.

Turns out I have anxiety which has never happened to me before!

amazing how stress and anxiety can affect a persons health. Even someone reasonably healthy.

Not nearly as healthy as I want to be. Got to a point where I was having a few beers every night and it just wasn’t sensible to be piling on the pounds like I did. Took a month off drinking in October and felt so much better for it, so much so that I’ve since started drinking non-alcoholic beer instead of the proper stuff. Heineken Blue is the best I have found. Also packed in smoking recently although I am still partial to the odd one on rare occasions, and also back in the gym 5 days a week. Been going in the mornings as I feel it sets me up for the day properly then. Hoping to shift a couple of stone in the next 6 months or so.

In the summer I was having a few beers almost every night. It's an easy ritual to get into, especially when the weather is hot. I found myself not exercising at all during that period and easily put a stone on. Crisps and whatever goes with it are a bastard too.

I still drink beer almost every weekend but I feel much better and have lost the weight from being strict mon-fri. It helps keep my head in the game.

That was the killer for me. We’re so used to having about 3 weeks of good weather that usually I can drink when I want and still stay in decent nick, but when the summer was about 5 months long it really did me in.

I used to be in the pub most nights years ago, but gradually cut it down to just weekends. Now I drink when the feeling hits me, usually on match days now. Feel so much better physically and mentally, wish I'd had done it years ago.

I hate to tell you but between 50 and 60 is when your previous lifestyle starts catching up with you.
And the worst thing is you don't know it's happening until it hits you and it's too late,
Then your doctor tells you your arteries are 50% clogged
Maybe you'll be lucky.

Both my parents and all my grand-parents lived to a good old age, so I should have good genetics.
I've never smoked (but must have inhaled lots of second-hand smoke), never been a regular drinker, mostly just wine on special occasions.
Never a big red meat eater. My one big weakness has always been sweet things.
Hardly ever got sick or felt the need to see a doctor.
However, none of the above prevented me from getting clogged arteries in my late 50's.
Suddenly started to get out of breath and a sore throat after walking a short distance.
The only prior symptom was slightly elevated blood-pressure.
After many exams and doctor's misdiagnoses, a cardiologist did a catheterisation and discovered one artery almost completely blocked and two partially blocked.
My advice to everyone is don't smoke, don't drink, avoid fatty foods, exercise regularly and most important of all avoid stress at all costs.
And don't fool yourself into thinking that because you feel ok now, it's safe to continue an unhealthy lifestyle.

Bloody hell that's no fun - we do all of those things to avoid getting stressed! :)

Well I'd avoid smoking but some fatty food and drinks in moderation is probably not too detrimental.
I buy a 6-pack of cider and it takes me two weeks to get through it, that's moderation for me.

I don't drink much most of the time. I can go days without a single tinnie. And I always have plenty of tinnies and spirits in. My problem is that sometimes I have a drink. You don't notice how much you have when you go out. A nice steady drink is about 2 pints an hour. Doesn't sound a lot. But when you are out for about 15 hours it is quite a bit. And you don't get hammered because it is spread over a long period. At least drinking at home you see the cans and bottles mounting up.

If you want to lose weight it is very easy, my old many has lost the best part of 8 Stone in 6 months. He eats 3 meals a day, and good portions, just controls what he eats, has things like cottage cheese for snacks.

But same goes with anything, if you want to stop smoking stop smoking, don't just cut down or do it for a month and go back, otherwise it just shows you can't admit the problem and don't really want to stop. Same with Alcohol

Me personally I have never smoked, don't drink except for on holiday. Don't eat a bad diet, maybe a few too many chocolate bars, but I work out 5 times a week, and have always been fit. I am a vegetarian, so have no meat.

It's getting into the habit. No matter how tired I am, i will go the gym at 7:30pm without fail.
Dinner I agree is the hard one, best thing to do imo is a meal plan, and then you can base it around your week.

To be fair the amount of time you spend on here suggests you don't have anything else to do ;) Just kidding but yeah I get what you mean. I luckily don't have kids, so don't have that added burden.

No chance I am going to the gym at 10 as I wouldn't be able to sleep and have to be up before 6 the next day. :(

If i had a set routine I could stick to it, used to love going to the gym at 7AM until about 8.15 and then go from there to work but can't do that now. The only real thing I could do is go out for a run when I can but I hate jogging with a passion so just can't get into it at all.

It used to be like that when we both worked different hours, a nice set routine so it was easy to do. Jammy bastard!

Yeah, because you've got a home gym, 2 nannies and a personal trainer!!

It's true that keeping weight off is 90% diet but I find that without the mental grind of working out I lose the ability to make the right food choices.

If I just spent an hour sweating like Jimmy Saville at an alter boy convention then I'm more than likely going to see pizza as a stupid idea that would wipe out my efforts.

Yeah the same as that. Much more motivated to eat properly after going through pain

I am probably the fittest and lightest I have been for decades! Cycle about 120 miles per week (150 in summer) and eat fairly okay. With a family I don’t drink much might have a pint a week unless it’s a special occasion then I get shitfaced.

Always tempted by crisps and chocolate due to travelling a lot in my job (so technically boardam eating) but been very disciplined at the moment.

Moderation is key, people have years of eating crap then all of a sudden thing they can transform their diets and turn into a free range vegan over night. Then wonder why they fail! I eat well during the week then release the reins at the weekend and it seems to work for me.

your old man must have been a right fat git..if he has lost 8 stone in 6 months ..next thing you will be telling us its just from walking the dog :happy:
