Pompey fuming (4 Viewers)

Michael Appleton was left seething by his lacklustre men as they fell to defeat at Coventry today.

Appleton believed his men lacked the same energy they performed with against Birmingham as they went down to a 2-0 loss at the Ricoh Arena.

The Pompey manager was angered with his men’s display and was at a loss to explain why they didn’t deliver.

He insisted the problems surrounding the club were not a valid excuse for them to use.

The Blues had their chances through the likes of Luke Varney, Joel Ward and Chris Maguire but failed to build on the 4-1 win on Tuesday.

Pompey are now six points from safety going into Tuesday’s meeting with Hull.

Appleton believes it will be the next two games which define what happens with eight games left this season.

He said: ‘It was disappointing.

‘We didn’t start well and I think we lacked that bit of energy.

‘We can’t use what is happening around the club as an excuse. We have to perform better.

‘Too often we made the wrong the choices.

‘But we have two home games coming up. I’ve said all along that they are going to be crucial.’

From pompey board... a tad bitter? :D:D:D:D

Both teams played awful today
We were by far the better side at the Ricoh for the first half and we could've easily took the lead against a woeful Coventry.
Alex Nimely deserves a mention for the most annoying opposition player i've seen in a while.
In 90 minutes, no-one really deserved to win imo and the Coventry fans are easily one of the worst sets in the league. But, as usual, our support was immaculate.

Appleton added 'We have received permission from the Football League to extend our own transfer deadline until the end of the season. I am optimistic of adding around 15 new faces to bolster the squad.'

Agree with all of the above. Last 15 minutes our boys didn't want to know.

The whole 'Ricoh experience' reminded me of a pre-season friendly. Warm sunshine, t-shirts and shorts, lots of empty seats, no atmosphere (apart from in our section). I would rather be a Pompey fan in League Whatever than a Sky Blue. Thank God I was born in the South !

I did notice David Norris having a right go at his teammates trying to get them fired up.

Didn't think they were that bad to be honest. Just a bit powder puff up front. Their hads dropped at 1-0 though.

Certain parts of the South are quite nice. Others, like Portsmouth, are an abomination.

Hmm. We get bigger crowds than they do (admittedly only by a couple of hundred due to this years low attendances). Think they are big time because they spent a few undeserved seasons in the prem on money they clearly didn't have. The club are a disgrace to English football.

Fans of a defeated team taking empty potshots at the side that beat them? Extra extra, read all about it.

Them two man city players, shouldn't of been allowed on our bench today.

Also does anyone remember the few tossers from Portsmouth who after they beat us at their place came on here just to wind us up until they were banned? Shit hole of a place, embarrassment of a football club really one club I have no sympathy for when it comes to their financial plight. Goodbye

Got nothing against pompey. They're bending the rules but they're not an embarrassment. Really good fans, didn't stop singing yesterday. And we won... comfortably!

And people say they feel sorry for the supporters of Portsmouth, I hope they go out of business & have to start over in the Badger Beer Southern league 7 !:D

But I thought when we played Southampton we were all Pompey fans... most cringeworthy moment ever when our fans were singing Play Up Pompey... ugh

Harsh. You're basing your whole opinion on a few morons on a message board. I hope other people don't judge us in the same way. They'd only have to have a glance on here to see that we're plainly not all pulling in the right direction.

I don't want any team to go out of business. As every team, whoever they are, have fans who really care for their club.

Exactly. If you're judging a club based on some stupid people on messageboards, some of the stuff on here would make me wish we go out of business.

The difference is though the people that go on forums are usually the more intelligent football fans (ie can read & write). I might not agree with everyone on here but I respect their ability to argue a point. If the pompey fans on their forum are also their more intelligent set it makes you wonder what the rest are like!

I haven't many nice things to say about Pompey. The club is rotten from top to bottom and the fans and staff believe they have some right to still bring in players when we have to make do with kids and, at our worst, were nowhere near as financially screwed. The football league let them off the hook at every opportunity - 10 points with minimum they should have had. They shouldn't be given a chance to stay in this league

You've obviously never been to Portsmouth or you wouldn't have to wonder :D

But there support was amazing, although I felt like sticking those drums where the sun does not shine.
They never stopped singing.
Put us to shame at home.
