Then again, surely in this sort of deal the onus is on the selling club to carry out appropriate due diligence. Bolton's financial problems are widely reported, why did FGR believe they could afford £1m?

If selling clubs looked into the finances of purchasing clubs there would be no more transfers!

I’d imagine they can’t register them so there’s little to no point of recall. That’s probably an oversight in the ruling, can see it being amended to being able to re-register players if clubs are in breach of contract like this indicates.

He paid himself £525k in consultancy fees last year
But in 2005 he was banned from being a company director for 8 years for offences relating to 8 companies
Transgressions included diverting company funds for personal use, VAT discrepancies and failing to cooperate with receivers

There are some that will morally be wrong but play to the line of the law which seem to just get past the fit and proper test, people who have been banned from being directors should show red flags straight away.

When a club is on deaths door I do wonder whether the 'fit and proper' test is carried out as strictly... I'm assuming not given the lack of time available for it to be conducted.

Surely with things like that it's public knowledge to find stuff like that out? Same as credit checks etc.

I mean if you look at the ex-Leeds Chairman Massimo Cellino as another example; it was discovered later on during his reign that he was suspected of tax evasion and had links with the Mafia. He was still in charge behind the scenes after this, he just wasn't chairman because the FL asked him to resign.

The fit and proper test is pretty useless really. It just stops conmen such as those who took over Notts County from owning football clubs. It still paves the way for absolute charlatans to run clubs unfortunately

That's the problem, believing someone shouldn't own a football club from a moral standpoint is subjective and will never hold up. Another example is the Nottingham Forest owner. Previously was charged with match fixing offences whilst chairman/owner of Olympiakos but was still allowed to take over the Forest. I suppose our judicial system is 'innocent until proven guilty' but come on 90% of the time there's no smoke without fire. He's now being tried for bribery charges.

The FL is useless.

It's clear to me that realistically their standpoint is: if your bank account checks out then you're good to go.

Sounds a little bit like some people who owned a local major uk car brand, but paid themselves good money and masses into their pension funds

The previous owner was a proper Bolton fan and paid up all the debt - i think about £175 million
And then after Anderson had taken over and was having cash flow problems the previous owner, who was seriously ill advanced him around £5m to keep the club going
He died 4 days later
This Anderson guy is down there at sewer level with the Oystons
