Apart from his flapping my main criticism of Burge is his kicking and the time he takes to get rid of the ball. Stockdale was excellent in all these aspects, and I never sensed anxiety in our defence...
I think you are missing the point. Stockdale apparently looked composed and in control when crosses came in to the box. Compared to Burge who plays like the ball's on fire when it comes into the box. I'm not convinced he is this outstanding shot stopper either. I think our expectations of goalkeepers have dropped massively over the last few seasons and he's been the best of a bad bunchLets be honest here, Stockdale had next to nothing to do and looked heavy on his feet, Yes Burge may not be as commanding in his box but god he is much more mobile and i would have loved to see stockdale actually make a difficult save.Give the lad a fair assesment, Burge actually spills VERY little and makes good saves, there is MUCH worse in this division. Stockdale had too make 1 save all game, not a fair assesment...
I think Burge is off when his contract ends this summer but Stockdale would be a replacement that might suit a team challenging for promotion in this Division.I have some sympathy for Burge as he gets a lot of flak despite being a decent shot stopper.....but it must be said, he doesn't inspire as much confidence as you would like. A QPR-supporting mate of mine once explained to me why Chris Day, who I'd always thought was a decent keeper, lost his place in their team to the likes of Fraser Digby, Lee Camp and Simon Royce...."they were better keepers than him". Fact is, Burge isn't the best we can do - there are others out there who could do better. If it's deemed a sensible use of funds, I'd support us signing Stockdale, or someone like him, on a permanent deal, and put Burge on the bench to learn from them for 2-3 years. But perhaps that's not realistic; perhaps he'd decide to leave and try for first team action elsewhere. I just think that when Murphy left he was thrust into the team before he was ready and has never lost his reputation as an unreliable rookie despite playing 100+ games for us.

Players that Burge has played with for years and knows inside out and I've never seen him positioning them or talking to them. He's too timid and in return his Defence are scared of what calamity he's gonna make if they let's the ball through. When we've been conceding so many goals from set plays you appreciate a keeper that commands his area and takes control of set peice situations. He was vocal and in command, one of the first corners in the second half he cleared the six yard box off defenders and came out and collected the cross. Even when we were attacking he was outside his box telling Mason where he wanted him positioned for a counter attack. It was quite refreshing
Exactly, another example was when he came running out to clear it. Our players just turned around and got up the pitch rather then having to babysit.Players that Burge has played with for years and knows inside out and I've never seen him positioning them or talking to them. Players Stockdale had trained with once and he came off the pitch without a voice because he was shouting so many instructions.

It was obvious, even seeing the game out there was no panic. The defence had more confidence in Stockdale
I'm not lavershing over a keeper we can't have, simply just pointing out over him doing the basics has shown Burge up for how poor he really is.Stockdale did well yesterday, better than i thought he would do,my thinking on him was,if the guy is only here for one weeks emergency loan, then he wouldn't care to much about maybe conceding a goal or two,it didn't happen,we know that,Rochdale hardly threatened us,but when he was called into action,he did fine, next week we will have Burge back in goal,so what's the point on lavishing over some keeper we won't see again until maybe next season(perhaps)
Burge may be going to another club next season, and if so good luck to him, until then i will back him as he is still our keeper.
I was wrong on Stockdale,i admit, but it was only the one game and against a a poor Rochdale side lets not forget, Maybe he might be available for the Walsall game, "i doubt it though" just so the majority on here can make up there own minds,Listening to the game on the radio doesn't give you the full picture.
Who's getting carried away?Glad we got the win and fully deserved, but i am certainly not getting carried away,we played a poor Rochdale side i believe who rarely threatened us,had we came away with a win at lets say Sunderland or Portsmouth yesterday then maybe, lets see if we can carry yesterday's good work into next weeks game.
Lets also be honest and say Burge has cost us at least two wins this season and no one has confidence in him when a cross or set piece comes in to take control of the his area, make a decision and claim the ball as his.Lets be honest here, Stockdale had next to nothing to do and looked heavy on his feet, Yes Burge may not be as commanding in his box but god he is much more mobile and i would have loved to see stockdale actually make a difficult save.Give the lad a fair assesment, Burge actually spills VERY little and makes good saves, there is MUCH worse in this division. I suspect that's the only way a player like Stockdale will come, with us paying part of his salary until the end of his contractAlthough Stockdale has been frozen out at Blues and is training with their U18's, he still has another year to run on his current contract, even if he is released he will have to take a big pay cut to come here.
Maybe we could get him on a season long loan?
Burge does catch crossesAll Stockdale done really was one good save and caught a few crosses, yet people are amazed at how good he was. That to me highlights what people's expectations are.
Wow, he caught a cross, amazing!!! Why are people amazed at a keeper doing his meat and drink? Because we haven't seen it happen for 4 bloody seasons that's why!

Stockdale may not be in 40k, but yes still on A LOT more than the 2k we'd offer him.
He had a good game yesterday. He was extremely dominant in the air and distributed the ball quickly and efficiently.
However, Burge is a good keeper. He's kept us in plenty of games. He's not the issue in this team.
Joe Cole was on more at Villa than we could of offered him in wages. But with the settlement that Villa offered him to get him off their books he was happy to take a few extra quid from us in return for some game time and a bit of fitness etc.Stockdale may not be in 40k, but yes still on A LOT more than the 2k we'd offer him.

According to a Blues fan mate of mine, he is on £35K per week, and they have huge financial problems.
It just goes to reinforce the gulf between League One and the Championship.
It will continue until a few clubs/players/agents have a reality check. Some years still, I fear.
He has cost us in many others as well.
