Paul Edwards was a decent LB

My mum helped him to buy his house when at Coventry. I remember sitting in our front room and not believing my eyes that this professional footballer was in our house. He also arranged for me to have the autographs of the entire city squad of the time...I was so proud of it, took it in to school for show and tell

Yes you're right. He and Bobby Mac the best full backs ever. Pick anyone from that team : Powell, Beck, Yorath etc . The best I can remember. Such a shame Graham Oakey had his career cut short.

Oakey was a great full back no doubt, but it is a position we have been well served by over the years. Not sure he was better than Danny Thomas, Brian Borrows or Roland Nilsson.

Bobby McDonald was a fantastic left back - bad move by Gordon Milne to freeze him out in favour of Harry Roberts in his final season with us though. Jimmy Holmes was also a good left back, and of course we had Stuart Pearce, who we criminally allowed to run out of contract, thinking he would gratefully sign a new contract having joined us from non league. Imagine how much stronger our cup winning team would have been with Pearce, rather than Greg Downs!

I can’t remember if his contract was running down, but Pearce definitely left for a fee. The surprising part of the deal was that his price was lower than that of Ian Butterworth who was no where near as good a player. They both left for Forest at the same time.

Oakey was such a whole hearted player. He played like a winger constantly taking on and beating opposition players. I remember one game against Birmingham at Highfield Road where he was simply superb. I liked Thomas too, but for the way he constantly took on and beat players, Oakey every time for me.

From that team Oakey, McDonald, Gillespie, Hutchison and Wallace would be in my all time City team. Fergie would be one of the subs. Yorath the best captain I have seen. Also loved Blyth in goal. There were so many great games that season.

We had players such as Les Cartwright, Alan Green and Jimmy Holmes who were often on the fringes of the first 11 but were all very able.

I thought Butterworth went to Norwich

Both Butterworth & Pearce's contracts expired but in those days players out of contract still commanded a fee if their existing club still wanted them. If a fee wasn't agreed then it went to a Tribunal. In this instance a fee was agreed. Not long before we got royally shafted by the Tribunal when Mark Hateley went to Portsmouth for a pittance, only a season later to get transferred to AC Milan for 10 times what we got for him.

On Pearce, I read his autobiography and said he was happy at Cov, and would have signed a new contract if he had been offered one, but we kept him waiting, treating him like he should be grateful for having the chance to play for us. Meantime Cloughie tapped him up and that was that. Butterworth never really settled at Forest, but he became a pretty good player at Norwich and had a pretty decent career.

Remember Hateley going well. I think the tribunal fee set was £50k and, as you say, he left Portsmouth a year later for a million.

He was dog shit. One of the worst players I have seen in a city shirt. He made Ryan Haynes look like Maldini. 3 years at the club and made 36 appearances. 1 particular game sticks in the mind away to Man City where he was to blame for all 3 Man City goals.
