I heard the same story but was told it was Paul Edwards we signed.Ah Peter Billing. The story goes that City scouts went to see a youngster playing for Crewe one night. The youngster, a midfielder had a poor game and we signed centre back Billing instead.
The youngster signed for Aston Villa shortly after.
His name was David Platt.
(not the one in Coronation Street)
And all just behind an aging but top class Roland Nielsen ?!Bobby was decent but Danny Thomas, Stuart Pearce and Gary Gillespie come to mind (in that order) as my top three defenders.
Yup. Downs one of the worst left backs to win a cup winner's medal and an obvious weakness. Singularly failed to replace him, well... ever really.I heard the same story but was told it was Paul Edwards we signed.
I remember his debut and being excited that we’d finally got someone in to replace Greg downs. My excitement didn’t last long...
Thought you were older ?!Yup. Downs one of the worst left backs to win a cup winner's medal and an obvious weakness. Singularly failed to replace him, well... ever really.
Why do we struggle with left backs so much? In my time watching city you'd have Burrows (average really) Warnock (great, but on loan) and Fox as the only stand-out ones. It's hardly a stellar list.
Not sure if I should be flattered or not!Thought you were older ?!

Martin Grainger who played for us on loan from Brum was decent. Shame it wasn’t for very long.I heard the same story but was told it was Paul Edwards we signed.

Very true, should have been binned after cup final. I know Sillett looked at local lad Nigel Winterburn while he was at Wimbledon and Birmingham’s Julian Dicks both became top players but plumped for Paul Edwards who was worse than Downes. Old Sillett could coach but his transfer market record not the best.Yup. Downs one of the worst left backs to win a cup winner's medal and an obvious weakness. Nah...Stewart Robson was signed in 1991 by Butcher & played in the Prem
What about Spider? In my time we've had Dave Clements, Jimmy Holmes, Bobby Mc, and of course Stuart Pearce. So, some pretty good left backs, just not many of them...
What about Spider?
Well, I must admit, I liked the guy, but I never thought he was at the level of the others mentioned.
I started going up the year we won the cup!!! My dad was like, “it won’t be like this every year”. He wasn’t wrong. Not sure if I should be flattered or not!
Sketchy memories up until the season before the cup win. At least I'm not a glory hunter who only came on board that season!
Mickey Adams, now he was better than Downs. Wonder if he regrets sodding off for Leeds?
Yes, always liked Chris Cattlin. A whole hearted player who looked a bit ungainly but was hard and effective. I thought he was allowed to leave too early, not sure who Gordon Milne had lined up to replace him. I remember there was a campaign by fans to try and get Milne to reverse his decision. I think there was a petition which people signed to say they wanted him to stay. I always remember that Cattlin himself said, as he was off to his new club Brighton, that as soon as his playing career finished he would be back to Coventry and would have a season ticket to watch the team. Well, that never happened. I think he opened a shop selling rock and then became (a popular) manager of Brighton for a time. I like his forthright comments about the club and especially about Sisu. He was particularly scathing of Seppala at the weekend. What about Spider?
I’ve had a quick flick through - has anyone said che Bunce and Mikkael Bischoff yet?
Brian Alderson, I didn't realise he passed away in 1997 till just now when I looked him up, often an exciting player. For some reason me & my mates used to shout "you know everything Brian" when he had the ball, I think it was a line stolen from a popular ad campaign of the time.
RIP Brian.
Cobi Jones
Same as mate. It was Stewart Robson I was thinking ofCheers The 80's and 90's merge into one at my age!

Mick Hartford. Scored in every game he ever played, including a corker against Newcastle at Highfield road. Haha. !
He was class. Had it not been for injuries I reckon he’d have had a long international career...would’ve never played for us of course. One of the best players we ever had and by that stage he was losing the battle to a crippling injury.
Julian Gray (apologies if already not mentioned!!)
