Probably the hardest and scariest defender in an era of hard and scary defenders in the 1970s. Yet again feels like a part of my early life has gone forever. Sad news. RIP Tommy and massive respect.

Tommy Smith was one of the hardest men of his time.

I was fortunate to be a golf function with Frank Worthington as guest speaker.

He told a time when he was playing against Tommy Smith at Anfield and happened to nutmeg him.

‘If you do tha’ Again, I’ll break you’re effin’ legs’
Said Smith.

‘Ref, did you hear that ‘ says Frank.

‘Yes lad, and I suggest that you play on the other wing’

May Tommy Smith Rest in peace.

BTW what a player Worthington was on his day (even if he played for 2 garbage clubs :) ). Real tearaway off the field as well

Is that John Tudor in the background?
Top spot, sir - I think you could be right.
Had a brief chat with him as he arrived for the 'Legends day' fixture. As with all of them, more than happy to talk and in my case sign a book or card/picture. (Go easy on me! I never did this as a kid but I'm still in awe of our former players.)

He had dementia - i listened to an article about him on the radio - DWP couldnt recognise that he was struggling - no benefit etc at that time - maybe something changed but it was a sad story - as for football he was solid !!!! literally made of iron

Only ever saw Tommy Smith play against us once - in the re-arranged fixture at the end of 1976/77. Me and younger brother stood at front of the kop, almost dead centre behind goal. The only thing I can recall about that game other than that balmy spring midweek fixture feeling mixed with tension of a genuinely huge fixture, is the ball crashing down from the underside of the bar and crossing the line but play being waved on. There is the most grainiest, brief clip of that incident on youtube but I still can't remember/make out who the 'striker' was.

Read that he wasn’t too fond of our fellow black brothers, in fact, he was not a big fan at all!

“In 1988, Smith caused controversy after stating in an interview with the author Dave Hill that Howard Gayle "suffered from a black man's attitude towards the white man. See, everybody thinks whites have an attitude towards blacks. In reality it's blacks who have a problem with the whites... I used to call Howard the 'White Nigger'. Now that is a compliment. It was the only way I could find to describe that I thought he was OK." Smith then went on to comment to Hill that "I'm not prejudiced but if a coon moved in next door, I'd move, like most white people would. If my daughter came home with a nigger, I'd go mad. But I'm only being truthful and normal."[36]Smith intended to sue Hill, but found he had no grounds to take legal action as Hill had recorded all of Smith's comments on tape during the interview.[37]

He stole that 'term' from Elvis Costello.

Wasn't he claiming some form of benefits, disability or something, and took some penalties for charity and they stopped his benefits? RIP to a true winner and hard man

Heard he was a great player. Never saw him

Sad to see he was a huge racist looking at his comments on black players
