The only manager you rate is yourself. It's interesting that you are alway budget driven. A bit one dimensional aren't you.

Which of those I’ve listed were inferior then?

I thought he made L2 a lot harder work than it needed to be and that the majority of the season we weren't adding up to the sum of our parts. Have to give him credit for assembling that squad in one window on the back of that awful relegated squad though and then for getting us through the playoffs once we were there.

Off the field I love the younger player scouting system now. How we seem to do deals for players in advance or under the radar and for players that no-one expected, that we develop players we bring in and via the academy. Experienced heads have been more problematic: Ogogo, Brown, Vincenti, Beavon who he retained (I think), even JCH who was experienced in terms of higher league experiences rather than age.

On the field his footballing philosophy at the moment is great with quick, direct players.

Next season is an important one, especially if we do end up staying at the Ricoh. Having had money to spend and looking at the teams likely to leave and join L1 then we really should be in a position to kick on. Would like a bit more consistency over the season, not the slow burners of the last 2 seasons that spark into form in the last 10 or so games. We've been starved of serious unbeaten runs, look how excited we all got after 5 wins and yet Charlton currently 11 unbeaten, Portsmouth went 11 unbeaten, Luton 28 games, Barnsley 20, Sunderland 19. If we're going to challenge for autos or at least comfortable playoffs, he needs to crack that and to do so he needs to pick his experienced summer signings better this year. Ones that will lead our talented kids to snatch draws from defeats and wins against defensive opposition.

He's been a really good manager for us overall so far and for me 8/10: 9/10 off the field, 7/10 on the field.

I'll say it

Many cant see how lucky we are to have him and we need to stick with him
Really interesting reading that thread back again.
The thing is that as soon as we hit a poor patch the knives will be out again. It was funny reading the Sunderland thread and seeing the tide move from positive to negative as the score changed. Some people can’t see past the last goal against never mind the last defeat, or horror of horrors, a run of poor results. For some the bigger picture doesn’t exist.

Surely for the Checkatrade he only managed us in the final, and the other Wembley win was through the playoffs, having finished 6th in the fourth division. Wonderful occasions after so many barren years, but not the kind of CV that makes you a top manager.

He’s underachieved with some poor tactics at times this season. But no doubt he’s done enough to stay at the helm, and I think he may be able to get us out of this league, and if he does that I’ll be on board with the hero worship.

absolutely agree. Chaplin, Hwuila, Baka, Bright, Bayliss, Shipley etc, all been unfairly critised this season.

Robins is building a young squad.

On sat, Oviedo and Grigg weekly wages combined cant have been far off total weekly wage bill of our entire team.

At some point we need to back a manager and support him through the good and the bad.

For me, that point is now and that manager is MR

The fact is that Robins, whatever budget he has had,has achieved more than any manager since relegation from the Premier League. That is 15 permenant managers by my calculations. He has the best win ratio of any manager we have ever had. . He has continued to keep that ratio high in both League One and League Two since he returned to the club despite having to create virtually new teams in each of the past two seasons. He turned around a team and a club that was heading towards being non-league.

The best manager in a generation . Probably since the Sillett/Curtis era. I suppose you could look at it as a half empty glass and say that there has been such a lack of success over the last 20 odd years that any manager that simply stops the rot is a relative success, but there has been a bit more to it than that, and under difficult circumstances.

Since I've been following we've had

Gould 2 - too young to remember
Neal - too young to remember
Atkinson - big name noting else
Strachan - did well initially but probably backed more than any manager we've ever had. Got us relegated with a squad that should have stayed up
Nilsson - dd well but not for very long
McCallister - So. Boring
Black - great honeymoon but sacked before we could really tell
Reid - made us worse
Adams - steady but unspectacular, record is poor without Dennis Wise
Dowie - probably sacked too son but the football seemed to be turning already
Coleman - wasted everything that was put in front of him
Boothroyd - hoof
Thorn - absolute dogshit
Robins 1- did well but with a player far too good for the league
Pressley - great football initially but completely lost his way
Mowbray - incredible for half a season, poor for the rest and couldn't work on our budget
Slade - see Thorn
Robins 2 - Got a team in free fall to a trophy finishing the season mid table form, completely overhauled the squad to promotion, installed a system of scouting and acquisitions that makes sense and not far off playoffs.

Of all the managers on that rogues gallery I'd say Robins has done the best of the lot.

Looking at agent fees he’s got the 8th biggest budget in this league and we are 8th

So

Sillett
Milne
Cantwell
Sexton
Neal
Even Gould on round 1

Off the top of my head

Phil Neal!!! Jesus, you talk some shite sometimes.

better days

Robins has done a great job - in the circumstances
He came in when we were in free fall, a divided club with huge off field problems and was the 4th manager that season
What he's done since is remarkable and has given us fans some great days
So he's definitely a very good manager of players and resources at this level

You can't compare it with the situation in the Premier League
Up and coming players from all the divisions below would come to get a chance at the top level in England

Very unlikely given agency correlation to spend

Not necessarily, as high turnover to players will mean more agent fees. Whereas a team like Luton have built a team over a number of seasons, and so players will be on large wages. but won't be a lot of Agent fees.

I would say that of the teams below us in agent fees: Luton, Scunthorpe, Burton, will all have bigger budgets. plus possibly Doncaster and and Bristol rovers ( they offered JCH a lot more money than we were paying him).

Doesn't Cattermole alone cost more than our entire squad? He's on something like £40,000 PW? So that is what over 2 million a year?

The comment that strachan was backed more than any other manager is a myth and the squad he had in the end was classic relegation fodder

He wanted to sign Hartson a lot earlier and if he had managed to would have survived

We offered more money to Junior Brown than Charlton based off that logic

Now that I agree with. It’s a bit fuzzy but I’m sure we wanted him in December/January and finally got him about March time didn’t we?

One out of the 5 teams i mentioned. Not much of a point there Grendel.

Also i would be inclined to suggest that Robins knows better than both of us, and I don't see much point in him lying.

Legend is bandied about too much these days especially in this "instant success" society.

He ain't a legend, he's just a very good manager for us.

Here's my thoughts. yes MR has done really well over the last couple of seasons, but it's been in L1 and L2. Many of the managers listed above had to deal with Prem League and Championship opposition and they had little chance of competing. Winning against teams in L1 and L2 I'd suggest is a different ball game and any decent manager of CCFC should be capable of doing well. That said, MR seems to have the wind behind him and next season will be make or break.

Won 2 trophies so I’d say he’s done pretty well , I rate him highly to be honest , obviously makes mistakes but when you look into the stats it’s clear he’s achieved a great amount here in his time back , turned the club around from LOAN fc with no squad depth to a club with lots of young exciting players on its books and in a posititiom to just tinker every year if need be.

Over the last 20 years hes the best we’ve had

He will be gone in the summer if we are not playing at the Ricoh next season.
Then we will be sorry because I believe he is as good an established manager that we could possibly attract. He has a number of suitors from top League 1 and Championship clubs.
Then we will have to be "lucky" in attracting a young up and coming untested manager which can go one of two ways.

So top league one clubs all have managers who are doing well? So why would they need Robins?

Championship clubs, which clubs?

The only teams i could possibly imagine wanting him currently are: Bolton (basket case) or QPR, maybe Rotherham?

Other than that, the majority are either doing okay or have recently changed managers.

Why? He more than any manager knows the situation at the club.
