„They may have been local elections across much of England and Northern Ireland, but it was Brexit that dominated on the doorstep and early results demonstrate that frustration over Brexit had a huge impact on the results. The country needs a solution and that is a People's Vote.

Lib Dems are the big winners as main parties take a kicking
With hundreds of results still to come in, it looks like the local elections are a nightmare for Conservatives and Labour – with revenge for their handling of Brexit being blamed.

The Lib Dems look like being the big winners with Greens and independent also seeing a big rise in support, often in areas where they have a low base. Counting in Northern Ireland is yet to start.

The early evidence seemed to be that the Tories were punished for failing to deliver Brexit, while Labour’s fudge over a People’s Vote cost them. Even in largely shire elections, where more than 80% of the council areas voting backed Leave in 2016, pro-People's Vote parties are making advances.

And in Northern cities such as Sunderland, which famously voted Leave in 2016, the swing from Labour to Lib Dems and Greens is demonstrating that voters in favour of a People's Vote are deserting the Labour Party. Remain voters are taking it out on Labour, particularly in places such as Swindon and Sunderland where car manufacturers de-investing demonstrates the true costs of Brexit.

The Conservatives lost Bath and North East Somerset Council to the Lib Dems. Former Tory leader Tim Warren lost his seat and said: "I feel like we’ve been given a kicking for something that wasn’t our fault.

“I don’t think people are happy. The people that voted to remain blame us for leaving and the people that voted to leave blame us because we haven’t left yet. I think it’s almost anti-political.”“

I voted UKIP here in the local elections but will vote for the Brexit party in the Euro elections Yes I’m right leaning and proud of it.

I have said exactly the opposite to your lies. I said that the liberals did well- even in leave areas. The liberals have clearly stated they are a remain party. That may have something to do with it. I said that the EU cannot take our veto without our consent. At present they won’t get our consent even if the other 27 agree to do away with a veto. Yes, anything is possible and the UK may agree to waive a veto at some future time. They may also rejoin the EU if we leave. Who knows? You don’t.

Conservatives have LOST Warwick DC to no overall control. They lost 10 seats (including the leader of the ruling Tory group in Kenilworth) and the LibDems and Greens had big gains. Based on local issues such as the Lido closure.

I've thought for some while that there should be a 'protest'/'none of the above' box to tick on the actual ballot. At the moment it's impossible to tell who failed to fill the ballot correctly and who spoiled it deliberately. It'd give people an actual 'protest' vote to show dissatisfaction and give a better indication of how strong a mandate any party/candidate had. Would be an even stronger message if compulsory voting was brought in.

Plus the great thing is the other parties can't use it as a stick to beat the ruling party with cos it shows dissatisfaction with them as well.

The Northern Ireland results are starting to take shape now and the Unionists are making losses, Sinn Féin has one gain so far and the Alliance Party has gained 2.

Anecdotal I know but from my own families perspective (Large Northern Irish Protestant family), my generation are largely abandoning the traditional for my family DUP vote. Many to other unionist parties but also the neutral (as much as you can be in Northern Ireland) Alliance Party and something I thought I would never see some have even voted for Sinn Féin. The later for two separate reasons one brexit related one not. Brexit related being that my family is from the border and the majority of working age either work in the south or for companies that rely on cross border trade and to put it simply paying their mortgages and putting food on the table is more important to them than a British passport regardless of if it’s blue or red. Non brexit and especially from the youngest of voting age in my family they also don’t want to see a difference between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K., they want equal LGBT rights and pro choice for women. If they can’t get that as part of the U.K. they can now look to Ireland as an opportunity.
