Clive Platt signs! (3 Viewers)

From what Boothroyd said I'm guessing this guy is more of a link man than a goals scorer, so I can hold back on the disappointment (nothing personal Clive)

If he sticks him up front and gets Eastwood to play off him and whacks the ball from Westwood to him and it gets us loads of goals. I am happy :)

Yeah, I have doubts over Platt scoring goals at this level but if he can win balls for Eastwood then it makes more sense. I really think we missed out by not playing Eastwood and Best together more often last season, the 2 games we did that Eastwood bagged 4 goals. If I remember rightly it was Best's header that set up Eastwoods winning volley v Peterborough at home last season. At the end of the day you need to be able to mix it up upfront because if you play 1 system all the time in attack you will get found out which is what I think happened last season. At times we're gonna need to win ugly, some teams are just going to be better football teams then us, particularly away from home and we just have to do what we can so Platt gives us a different option in that respect. Obviously not a signing that is exciting to fans but if he gives 100% and does the job he's given which is mostly winning balls in the air I will be happy. He might surprise us and bag a few goals himself as well, Aidy obviously sees something in him so let's give him a fair chance.

Are we not being a bit silly putting so much faith for Eastwood to get the goals, check out his stats, not just for his time with us,but Wolves also.
Is Clive Platt the number 9 Boothroyds been on about,im shocked.

100% agree Trevor, by the way some of our fans harp on about Eastwood you would think he was a proven 20+ goal a season striker and that he is not and it's about some cov fans looked a things a bit more realistic light with Eastwood if he hit 10+ goals he's had a good season you can't build a team and pin your hopes on such a unproven player and i actually can't see him starting against Pompey if we play 4-5-1 anyway back to Platt, i'm not best pleased about the latest signing, but giving him a chance is the least we can especially with the glowing report hes gained from his previous clubs fans! http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A72269139

"Colchester" fans actually call him the tree because he don't move :D

Like i said before expect a long hard season this year guys it maybe time our look finally runs out!

Apparently if Eastwood plays in his favoured position he'll score 20 + goals!!!.I ask the question, why he hasnt played there.A decent spell around December last season seems to have got people thinking he can become prolific.I hope he does, but i very much doubt it.I hope the signings in the striking department come good, but at first sight surely everyones got to be dissapionted.
Lets hope they prove us wrong.

If Eastwood started the same amount of games upfront with Best as Morrison did, he would have scored more goals than Morrison. Also isn't this the last season of his contract, he's bound to come good now

I am looking forward to seeing some of our options. I can't pass judgement on the fella until he has played a few games for us which is the same for the other signings like Jukebox.

I think Eastwood does have class about him, last season when he did get a decent run he scored a few goals and he was the only striker not afraid to have a shot where as Morrison wanted to run the ball into the net when he wasnt backing into defenders and hitting the floor like a sack of shit.

I find it hard to knock Morrison,he was top scorer for us for the last 2 seasons.Eastwood did nothing in the championship with Southend, nothing with Wolves and more importantly nothing with us.
As Ma Ma Ma carl baker said,if we do start the season with 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 or whatever people want to call it Eastwood probably wont start as he hasnt got the attributes to play up top on his own, bringing others into play etc.

I agree that he won't be the best up front on his own. I would like to see him play behind the loan striker though :)

Morrison was the top scorer because he played more games because Coleman liked him, IMO

Also against Shrewsbury Aidy went for a 4-1-3-2 formation apparantly, not sure if he will stick to this. Could work well with Freddy and Jutkiewicz up top, Carsley holding and Baker, Clingan and McSheffrey in midfield.

I think he should give that a go. Will have to see who he plays on Saturday but I think every new player should be given a chance before slated. Loads of people slated Danny Fox and Scott Dann before they joined. They also said who is Westwood ;)

Bashing players who are unproven in the championship is rubbish anyway, Kevin Doyle was an unknown player playing in the Irish league before Reading signed him up for cheap. Then there's Nicky Maynard who Bristol signed from Crewe, Kightly who Wolves plucked from nowhere, Mifsud did well for us before his head ballooned and he'd never played in the Championship before. Then as you say the Danny Fox's, Scotty Dann's and Kieran Westwood's of this world. I know Beckford played for Leeds in L1 but they signed him from nowhere and he was unproven at L1 level and scored goals for fun and most Championship clubs wanted to sign him. I could go on all night but I have work tomorrow and I think you get the idea ;) Let's be honest, no-one here has ever seen Platt play, just as no-one had saw Fox, Dann or Westwood play before they signed for us so I'm reserving my judgement when the season starts as all we have to go on at the moment are bitter comments from Col U fans trying to reassure themselves they are going to stay in League 1 this season.

It's all fine and dandy reserving judgement on players like Jutkiewicz and O'Donovan and all you listed above who have not played at this level before as they have a point to prove but players like platt there is little point he's been there done it and i might add not very succesfully, never has been any good and i doubt he is going to get better than he is now. I still now can't get over the fact we signed a 32 year old 6 foot 4 donkey striker with a scoring record in the championship is like mine, really one of the most baffling transfers i've ever seen at the club, my only hope is he's nowhere near our first 11 come a saturday afternoon, yes i know i'm going to get some stick for saying that but we are going to be in hot water come may next year with no goals in our team and are we not going in reverse with our transfers policy of signing young and up and coming players to signing old dross like platt for the life of me i can't believe Ranson even let this transfer go ahead i thought he was a shrewed little operator in the transfer window with the sale of Horrordale etc.. But this signing is making me think twice.

This is the first of Aidy's signings that i feel a bit weird about, but it's likely he'll just be a squad player anyway, and it's always another option. A plan B for opening up defences, if you will. So in that respect, even if he doesn't have a great effect here, his presence is not totally unwarranted.

However, the one thing i do feel dodgy about is that we've paid to get him here, and only for 1 year at that. I don't imagine we paid that much, but all the same, funds are something we don't have a lot of. To be dipping into our pockets for someone that we may not get much use out of doesn't seem like smart business.

So all in all, torn on this deal. Let's hope he does a good job for us and warrants Aidy's faith in him.

Here's hoping there's that elusive "20+" goalscorer yet to come in and that this isn't the last of our dealings this summer.

Yes i suppose you can pick out a few.Disagree about Westwood,he was excellent for carlisle before he came to us,saw him on sky a few times, especially against Leeds in the play-offs,then they were saying he's one of the best around.
Im not knocking these new signings,i just think its pretty stupid signing so many strikers who have done nothing at this level,we surely need 1 whos done a bit at this level.Beckford and Maynard scored a bagful at league 1 level and to be fair it isnt the biggest step up to the championship, our new boys havent even done that.
As for Eastwod,it's all if's.If he plays there he'd score loads,if he plays there he'd score loads.Lets face it at £1.2 million he's one of the biggest flops weve ever had at this club and his goal ratio backs it up.

i have said before, we are possibly looking at this all wrong. Aidy has said platt is underrated and everyone around him scores goals, if he has brought him in to allow the likes of Jukebox(liking this Nick!!) sheffers, eastwood and o'donnavon to get the chances then fine. we have hardly spent any money at all, and the bit we have paid for platt and jukebox means we must surely have at least a mill left. if not we have brought players in on a shoestring.
I trust what Aidy is doing the team performances have been encouraging, the lack of goals is still a worry, but give it time. lets see how we fdo against portsmouth first game, he said that is what we are aiming at, so no excuises come Aug 7. We must be ready and i think we will be. It's nice though to have so many options and formations at last, no one seems agreed on a settled 11. (in a good way)

Exactly.

Last season we had a bare minimum. People like Gunnar and Morrison didn't need to fight for their place as there was nobody to replace them.

It is a bit harsh to fault him.

All I keep reading is that he doesn't score but he sets other players up a lot and makes goals which with players like Eastwood and McSheffrey that is what we need.
