Feels a little early for the 'other team in our division signs someone, why didn't we?' charade as if we'd be after 400 targets.
I won’t pay another penny until we sign every single player targeted by every other club in this division.

Why does his dad have to comment on everything? Don't hear Lee Burges dad commenting about how Lee is looking for a move at Tamworth or where ever he's going

This article sums up why it was never a possibility for him to come back to Cov
Reading need him off the wage bill - along with a host of other out of favour players - to comply with FFP in the Championship
The Financial regulations governing wages are even tighter in League 1 in England so there's no way we could pay his contract
Scotland doesn't have domestic FFP limits although teams qualifying for Europe have to comply with EUFA's more generous ceilings
Hibs haven't qualified for Europe next year and McNulty is saying that he expects to report back to Edinburgh on 20th June even though Reading don't start till 1st July
Hibs it is unless another Scots club take a chance on him

No chance will he be donning Sky Blue while City have Aguero
No chance? Surely that means you'll be offering me a minimum of 100/1 then? ;)

They paid £4m for Will Grigg in January. Surely they wouldn't.
That transfer fee still shocks me. He's scored 20ish goals a season almost every time he's played at this level over the last 7 years but has struggled in the Champ with Wigan. That's a hell of a lot of money to pay for goals at this level without much guarantee that it will transfer over into the Championship.

Why does it when Sunderland hung themselves out to dry with that transfer? With Maja gone they were desperate to sign a striker and Wigan clearly knew Sunderland had the funds to blow any other bid from League One out of the water. Plus, regardless of the situation clubs always have to pay a premium when purchasing in the January window.

I understand the background and it's for exactly that reason it shocks me still - it was such a bad deal. They only got 1.5 mill up front for Maja who was on less than £1,000 a week. They ended up paying 3 million rising to 4, which is massive in this division, plus whatever they are paying him which I bet is closer to 10k than 5k a week and they'll never recoup that fee - no-one else can afford to get near that price in L1 and he's barely registered for Wigan (albeit a poor side) in the Champ so no-one there is going to pay that for him either.

I so much prefer our model of business and as I've said on other threads, I'm eagerly anticipating watching them forced to cut cloth this season.

It's a huge sum, I'm not disputing that. But they were desperate to mount a second half of the season charge into the automatic spots. Again, for this reason Wigan were able to effectively hold Sunderland to ransom. It's no secret that even after huge cuts last summer Sunderland's wage bill dwarfed even some of those in the Championship. Therefore, it was clear that the likes of Wigan knew how desperate Sunderland were to gain promotion.

Plain and simple they were played like a fiddle. Whoever orchestrated that deal from the Wigan camp deserves a huge bonus as I'd guarantee Grigg wouldn't have been sold for even half of what he was to Sunderland if another club had come in for him.

The Sunderland chairman discussed it on a podcast only a few days after. He was surprisingly honest about how badly he got shafted! In his own words

Stewart Donald said:
Wigan said to me at the start the prices needs to reflect the fact that we don’t want to sell him,” Donald revealed. “We had a meeting instigated by somebody close to Wigan, who told us he was available at £1m. Jack [Ross] said, ‘God, yeah.’

“We went in twice below £1m and they said, ‘Look, that’s the figure.’ We then put in a bid and they said he’s not for sale at that price. We pushed it to about £1.5m and they said no. That was a good week before the transfer deadline.

“The we seriously looked at a couple of other targets and put a couple of bids in. We enquired about another player and we were told £5m.

“People (at various clubs) were saying it was January tax and Sunderland tax. It was just getting really silly.

“I left it as late as I could, then I thought, ‘Nah, we need this lad (Grigg). I’d like to try and do this for Jack.’ We got to the last day and I pushed our bid up to two (million) and a bit more.

“I left it as late as I could for the last offer. I think it was seven, and they said ‘yeah’.”

I finished watching “Sunderland till I die” last week. One of the things that struck me about the club was the amount of people who worked for it. The amount of admin, catering and technical staff employed would, I imagine, dwarf what we have and what most lower league clubs have too. Their non playing wage bill must be comparitively huge too.

You can bet they've made a pretty hefty amount of those redundant since then.
