Collected my new car on Bank Holiday Monday. A Suzuki Vitara All Wheel Drive. I've been spending all week just getting used to all the bloomin' features! Apart from built-in Sat Nav, it has lane departure warning, auto braking system, reversing camera, a warning light on each wing mirror when a car passes on either side, cruise control which you can set the distance behind the vehicle in front, the road speed signs show up on dashboard, a woman's voice tells you about any hazards ahead such as road works. There's probably more but yet to find them! Talk about changing times! I learnt to drive in a Ford Prefect (pic below) and passed my test 47 years ago!

I first passed the motorcycle test on a 1967 Lambretta SX150.
Then I passed the car test in a 1965 Vauxhall Viva HA.
My British licence allowed me to drive both motorcycles and cars.

When I came to the USA, I had to surrender my British licence in order to avoid the driving test in New York.
I just had to pass the written test, which was easy.
When they gave me the New York license, it allowed me to drive cars only, not motorcycles, so I got cheated.
By the way, in case you didn't know, each state in the US has its own licenses and if you move to a different state you have to get a new license.
Also it's LICENSE in the USA, not LICENCE. One of the many quirky language differences.

I passed my bike test in 1980 on a Yamaha RD125 and my car test in 1985 in a Mini Metro after 3 lessons.

Passed in a mini metro 20 odd years ago, after passing my dad made me drive his old Ital to get used to the roads until I got a Vauxhall Astra at auction drove that for 3 years and 60k miles and lost under £500 on it when I sold it.

Passed in a Peugeot 306, first car was a 205, i turned up to view it and the girl selling it opened the door wrapped in a towel after just getting out of the shower, i was blinded and probably shouldn't have bought it as the gear linkages were looser than a hookers knicker elastic. Cost £800 and sold for £500 a couple of years later, could have been worse.

I passed in a Vauxhall Corsa in pretty bad snow. My first car was a Skoda Fabia that decided to let all the rain in whilst i was away in the desert for 6 months, had to ask my housemate to get it sorted for me!

Couldn’t get on with my instructor’s horrible snatch on the clutch in her brand new Talbot Sunbeam so she agreed to teach me in my lovely Triumph Toledo which I passed the test in. Clutch control was dead easy as the biting point was about 3mm above the luxury shag pile!

Just as an aside, how much were the lessons when you all took them? Mine cost £2-10/-0d (£2.50 in silly money!). I only had 6 lessons as well, as I'd been driving old bangers round fields and suchlike since I was about 15. My instructor just said to me on my first lesson, "Show me what you know." I did, and he just said, "OK, I'll put you in for your test! Just carry on with the lessons to iron out silly habits." I passed first time, and every test since, e.g. PSV (buses & coaches), taxi cab and motor cycle.

I haven’t got my glasses on so didn’t see the full stop as I was thinking how did your mum not know you were 14

I think mine were £12 a lesson or 10 for £100. Had 16 lessons, passed first time with 4 minors.

I failed my first car test. After the bit where they make you stop and start on a hill, I forgot to take the handbrake off. They failed me for that.
In 45 years of driving since, I've never had to stop on a hill.

No, I don't have any aversion to hills, I've just never had to stop or start on one.
I've lived in many different places. Currently living in Phoenix, Arizona.

Ah! The good ol' choke! My missus used to pull the choke all the way out and hang her handbag off it! And does anyone remember the floor mounted dip switch? (see pic)

Just a thought..... does anyone still 'hitch-hike' any more? Years ago, wherever you went in the country, you would nearly always come across hitch-hikers. Me and my brother managed to thumb lifts all the way to Monte Carlo and back in the mid 70's! Great days! I can't remember the last time I saw a hitch-hiker. Have they all got cars these days?

No they stopped it. Probably because you were coming across them.
