Yesterday heard the news about moving to Birmingham for "home" games. And yesterday afternoon us tenants in our block of flats got told in a meeting, that talks had broken down over us moving out and into new premises, so expect at least another year before talks resume. They told me I will still get the move and compensation etc, but to get it I must stay put. One chap stormed out calling them a bunch of tossers. Gets on your nerves being told one thing and then let down, who are these people who don't really give a shit ?

I have to Nick. Got told if I move I miss out on at least 7 grand and I'm top of the list for a bungalow as I'm over 60. But also we got told could be as long ahead as 2022.
I could be dead by then ! My son has moved out so looks like I'll stick it out and hope they don't move drug dealers in again upstairs !

Guess not. But I was down for a move before being told all this etc. A bloke said unfortunately if I move out now I will have to go on a waiting list, and miss out on the compensation money. He said I'd be silly moving as I'm in line for a decent move.
Just hope it's sooner than later.

Not really. As they will demolish our block to make way for renovation of the shopping precinct, the reason for compo and a move of our choice, links in with all this. They say because of the disruption they have to compensate us. But if any tenant moves before demolishing they lose out. Bit of blackmail really !

Which block do you live in? I've not been up to Bell Green for years apart from going by on Henley Road. Used to go up there shopping as a kid, i just about recall Sainsbury's being in Riley Square which became Kwik Save.

I'm in a smallish block at the front of Riley Square. They're planning to knock our flats down to open up the square, and modernise the area etc. It's got run down over the years, so does need doing up.
Kwik Save is now a Farmfoods but the Aldi opposite is currently closed down.
Too many drunks and beggars around now, they do what they like. But some good people here too, but it needs a refresh drastically.

I lived in Courthouse Green which is right next to Bell Green, so I was there pretty often.
I remember when they built and first opened Riley Square.
It was quite a neat place when it first opened with lots of good shops.
There used to be a Woolworth's there.
We'd often shop there instead of going into the city.

There's a group of Polish blokes who hang about the square all day drinking, they don't work. They sleep in a garage at the back of the shops, a neighbour saw them going in with 3 mattresses to kip on. I've got a Polish couple as neighbours and they don't speak to them as they say they are a disgrace, they told me they let down the Polish people who come to work etc.
These drunks beg constantly and stand outside the shops, they tire you down.
I like my Polish neighbours they are decent friendly and work hard. People say Send the Polish drunks back home, but Poland don't want them !

Bell Green was my old stomping ground growing up in the area. Sounds like it's gone downhill a bit! It used to have a great Greek chippy I seem to remember, also a bakery called 'Elizabeth the Chef' which made delicious cakes.

My mate's dad ran the Rose and Crown pub. ​

Went to Bell Green Primary and have fond memories of that school. Shocked that it was demolished!

As a teenager, me and my first ever girlfriend on cold, dark winter nights with no money and nowhere warm to go, would sneak into the 17 storey block of flats in Riley Square and kiss and cuddle in the lifts - we used to go to the top floor so we had plenty of warning to hop out if it was called. With mates we used to get on the roof and chuck power balls off the top - all that concrete meant some serious bouncing. Couldn't do it now as I'm terrified of heights. Remember coming off my bike at speed down the ramp in the square - not sure if that's still there. One of these days I'm going to do a nostalgia trip around the old haunts.

At the time the whole place seemed futuristic and modern. Now these places are desolate and bleak.

Used to knock about Riley square without a worry back then, although had to be careful in Woolies as one of our group was a thieving toe rag who used to get caught a lot. Guilty by association, so was always ready to do a runner..
Scrumping in the garden by the corner of Bell Green Club...Used to hang around in the cafe playing on the pin ball machines (they weren't the usual pin-balls, used to have to get 5 balls in a row to win).
Used to get dragged into Sam's the barber for my short back and sides when young, until my mates dad got one of those "home barber" kits, and I used to have to sit in line with his 6 sons to get my hair cut at his house.

Had my pre-wedding haircut at the barbers under bbr's flats, wedding in Walsgrave and reception at the Mercers Arms.

But funnily enough I get my hair cut on Proffit Avenue ! Nothing wrong with the area really just needs doing up a bit.
