Any fishermen on here? I ask simply because there's not a lot of footy about at the moment and wondered if anyone goes fishing regularly, lake or river. I got rid of my sea fishing gear when I left the IoW, so am now looking to build up stock again. I don't live too far from the River Severn, so I might give that a go when I'm ready, Upton-on-Severn being only a short drive away.
Hope I'm not the only sad bugger that stares endlessly at a float in the water, waiting for that telling 'bobbing'!

I stopped years ago then bought some gear on ebay a few years back and started again but haven't been for a couple of years.
Determined to do a bit in the summer as I'm not having a holiday.

You're in good company. I fish the Warwickshire Avon, canals, lakes in fact anywhere there's fish around these parts. Sometimes catch loads, regularly catch bugger all !

Me, fish a match every 2 weeks dont fish canals and rivers much these days a) because the only time rivers look good to fish its the close season b) since they tidy up all the canal towpaths on a weekend they are a raceway for Lycra clad idiots on mountain bikes or laden with dog crap.
So its mostly commercials for me , most have a cafe and bait shop on site, most of them you can park behind your peg, some even deliver food to your peg, so you can fish keep eye on your vehicle and feed ya face., doesnt matter if i frame in any of the matches or not every second Sunday its my release from work and the stress of everyday life for 5hrs or so.
H H there are so quality commercial fisheries in your part of the world if you avoid busy weekends and go during the week be plenty to chose from plus most of the owners are willing to give you advice after all its there living and if they look after you then you'll return

When I lived in Cov a few years ago, my favourite venue was Tunnel Barn Farm at Shrewley. Great bait and tackle shop. They would also take your order for food and deliver it to your peg. I'd spend all day there, 7am till dusk! Loved the place. I'm going to be looking at a spot of river fishing (I used to fish at Evesham), but will also looking for some nice pools nearby. Had some luck today as well. I posted on a local Malvern Facebook page that I was looking for 2nd hand tackle Some bloke gave me his address and said "Help yourself!" He'd left 4 cracking rods and two reels in his back garden for me - for nowt! Well chuffed!

Personally, I think fishing for sport is cruel to fish.
Imagine having a great hook pierce your mouth and being hauled out of your environment to where you can't even breathe.
The only exception would be if you are starving and catching fish is your only means of sustenance.
And I don't think many of us are in such circumstances these days.

My mate has a caravan down in Worcestershire next to the Severn, he's down there today and sent me a photo. Fair to say it's flooded!

I got into fishing as a lad when my dad used to take me out with his mate on his boat in Poole Harbour. Plaice, flounder, bass etc. Used to love it. Done a bit of coarse fishing too but about 15 years ago I got introduced to flyfishing. For me there’s nothing like it. I had a day on the Test in Hampshire week before last when the mayfly were just starting to hatch. Those trout are so smart. If you don’t present that fly 100% perfectly and that doesn’t happen very often, they’ll rise up, inspect it and turn away. But when they take it. What a buzz.

Best of all though, I now pack a couple of fly rods when we holiday on the Gulf coast, Florida. Believe me, sight fishing from the beach for snook and jack crevalles beats the lot.

I've never really fancied fly fishing. Looks a bit cumbersome and time consuming! I like to sit and relax and wait for the float to disappear! Caught a few hundred bass, mackerel, pollack and garfish while living by the sea. Really loved it! I saw a programme on TV a week or so ago and it showed how the River Test is the absolute best for fly fishing. I used to love Hampshire.

It's fabulous to look at. I live literally at the foot of the hills, but the trouble with living here, as a knackered old fart like me, it's TOO bloomin' hilly! All I can do is look at the scenery! Can't do the walks anymore. Even the driveway down to the car park where I live is about 45 degrees!

Some good spots on the Avon in Rugby. My mate likes doing Newbold but I prefer brownsover on the open water between staveley way and Clifton. Either way some good chub up there if you have the patience.

I remember watching a fishing programme years ago (either Matt Hayes or the late John Wilson) and they were fishing for chub using slugs. After a bit of rain, have a look in the garden for a few slugs. Not the nicest of things to pick up and hook but great bait for chub apparently!

I love sea bream. Lovely to eat! Here's one I caught when I lived down south. Had it for me tea that evening!

I live just off Staveley Way :emoji_thumbsup: I fish the stretch going the other way from the bottom of Ilmer Close all the way to the old railway viaduct by Birstall Drive. Some decent Chub when you can get through the weed in summer.

I fished with Slug many years ago on the Avon at Ryton. I had half a dozen Chub, biggest going to around 3lb. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to give it a go again,

Nick, believe me, when you go fishing by a lake or river bank and the weather is fabulous, you will feel like nodding off. But there are bite alarms you can set up for those that like might like a snooze. They are simple to set up and when you hear the buzzer go off, you leap up from your kip and grab your rod! Incidentally, I had a wander round a local fishery yesterday and they offer tuition and the loan of tackle for those who have never tried it before. That could always be an idea to try out?

Chub being chub, it's never happened since ! About 8 feet deep in the middle and gravel bottom. A completely unpredictable stretch this but it wins over newbold as there are absolutely no minnow here .
You're right about the weed. Every year it gets a little more difficult to access.

I know Sandy Bay, the kids go swimming there in the summer. Upstream between there and the footbridge, there's a deep right angled bend where I saw a chap catching some nice Roach a couple of weeks ago. Incidentally, if you're out nice and early in the morning, standing on the bridge looking downstream there's often some nice Chub in front of the overhanging tree,
I think I know the deep stretch you mentioned, might have a wander down there this weekend.....

Used to fish as a kid as we lived by Teddington lock - caught all sorts and fell in once following a bite ! Got invited to go fly fishing in the Test once 20 ago - caught one which was immensely satisfying put it back and was given a Sainsbury’s voucher - my wife bought our house while I was enjoying myself - expensive day out - house is not too shabby !

if the object of football is to get the ball in the net why not put pick it up and put it in there.

I've never understood the mentality of high jumpers. If you need to get onto a big soft platform, just go under the stick that's in your way!

I never understood the mentality of Marathon runners.

If the object is to get from the start of the course to the end of the course, rather than expend energy running it, why not get in a car and drive instead.
