Absolutely. Just need a good CM, well probably two actually. Westbrooke looks good but there’s going to be injuries and we’d soon be bare bones if a couple were out.

No. Bayliss faded at the end of last season and in some fans' minds that has equated to him being rubbish. He's incredibly talented and his natural position is CM. His biggest assets are finding good forward passes and driving the line forward by running at defenders. Playing him further forward nullifies both of these assets.

In Football Manager terms he'd be a CM 'advanced playmaker', very different skill set to a CAM and I think he'd be wasted there. I'm expecting a very big season from Bayliss this time round, think he'll have found his feet at the level and be a standout player.

Completely disagree, I think he faded because he'd been playing football almost continuously for 12 months since he broke through and was tired, he had to do a lot more leg work next to Doyle before Kelly's injuries cleared up. Play him too far forward and you take away his main abilities, he can't drive at a defence and push them forward if he receives the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the box. That's what Bright was good at, turning people and finding pockets of space. Bayliss creates space differently.

I see this as another 'Is Ryan Haynes a winger' thing. Fans see certain attributes and think players should be moved elsewhere. In reality Robins is a football manager, sees these players every day in training and has never attempted to play him in that position.

In the formation we play he's inconsistent because there's a defensive aspect to the role. Something he can't do. Similarly, his passing is average at best, something again that is highlighted at that position.

I do remember that (incredible bit of vision) but last season he'd execute such a pass in about one in 7/8 games on average. The same goes for the power runs. A slice of quality at a ratio of lets say 5:1 to even it out, means he's not consistent enough to excel in that position. I know it's league one so you cannot expect players to perform brilliantly every game; his age also needs to be taken into consideration, but at times last season we were completely carrying him. So, perhaps a trial at CAM in pre-season wouldn't be totally out of the question.

Yes. He'd play the role in a different manner to Bright but IMO would be more effective there than next to Kelly. If he is, he'd probably be a bit deeper to give him more space to look up and pass, but that potentially leaves the striker isolated so we need the two next to him pushing on to compensate.

The hole next to Kelly would probably be filled by Shipley initially, although Westbrooke may be given a few games as well.

Totally agree with this all apart from the bit about playing the final ball part. He is amazing at running with the ball at high speed, I would even say he is premier league in this respect. He needs to get far more assists given how much he breaks forward and if he can add this to his game he will be on '10 bags' this time next year for sure!

It’s not an opinion, it’s fact. Box-to-box midfielders are able to attack in the opposition box as well as defend in their own box. Whilst Bayliss is has to take up defensive duties in his role due to our preferred formation, it’s clear that it’s an aspect of the game that he struggles with. In my opinion MR asking Bayliss to take up such duties actually limits his ability to go forward which is why he was pretty average last season. This was highlighted in some games when Bayliss and Doyle we’re deployed together. With Doyle’s legs gone, Bayliss was asked to take up a role he was clearly uncomfortable with and further share the defensive duties.

His best position is still CM, however it’s clear he needs to work on several aspects of his game - including passing and defending to make it his own. I’d like to see how he’d fare in the CAM position during pre-season though.

I think he's got more ACM attricutes than box-to-box - he's far too weak defensively to do that. He can pick a pass and travel with the ball - things I'd associate more with an ACM. He's an (A)CM.

No mate, it’s definitely an opinion (and that’s a fact ;-)). If you can show me stats that show missed tackles and poor meters travelled etc then I’ll accept it as a fact. He’s more effective defensively than people give credit but he’s certainly always near the action whether the play is in our half or there’s making him a box - box midfielder in my eyes.

I don’t know how else to describe it other than he’s a bit “clumpy” to play CAM and I too don’t really know what that means.

I don't think Bayliss is ready to play in a midfield two. He'd be fine in a three, but in a two he has too much defensive responsibility and it stifles his attacking threat.

His most effective spell for us was when he played further forward on the right.

Give him the opportunity to play in the number 10 role for the first couple of preseason friendlies, to see how he gets on.
