I’ve watched a few games now (and enjoyed them) and have to say that they’ve embarrassed the men on one point. A) they don’t go down as easy as the men (no pun intended) and B) when they do go down (again no pun) they don’t go down like they’ve been shot by the second gunman on the grassy knoll, unlike the men. They’ve highlighted the embarrassing play acting that’s now rife in the men’s game and for that reason alone it’s been enjoyable.

One reason for this though, is unless you go down, you hardly get the foul. If you stay on your feet, you rarely get it.

What we seem to be seeing in this World Cup is the rise of the traditional European footballing nations, like Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
I expect the non-European nations will slip away, with the possible exception of the USA, who have so many players in Europe,

On-Field Review (for interpretation)
Goals

• foul committed by attacking player
• offside interference

Penalty Decisions

• foul leading up to penalty
• foul by attacking player

All direct red card incidents

No idea how you haven’t got this. The spitting incident (like the tackle on Houghton) could have been deemed a red card, therefore *CAN* have VAR used for them.

Netherlands vs Japan.
Fantastic game.
Japan should have won, missed a host of chances and ended up being done in by a dodgy penalty.
They have to do something about these penalties, it is ruining the game.
If the ball touches the elbow or above it should not be a penalty.
I also liked the old rule where the hand/arm had to move toward the ball.

If this is the way it is going, players are clearly going to just try and aim for arms and there will be shed load of penalties and lots of delays as they try and sort it out.

The overriding factor should be deliberate handball and THEN whether the player was deliberately trying to gain an advantage by making their body bigger.

The Japanese player did neither.

It's going to be a very harsh and cruel rule, this, I think.

For context, Australia were one of the favourites going into the Olympics.

Yup and for Japan to lose that game and be knocked out on the back of that decision is just incredibly harsh.

The Japanese player tonight clearly wasn't trying to make her body 'bigger' and it clearly wasn't deliberate. It was almost at point-blank range too and she is clearly trying to get her arm out of the way.


Common sense is needed.

And on the Cameroon game, I have just noticed that one of their players said that Ellen White was clearly offside.

I know there is the old joke about women not knowing the rules of football, but these Cameroon ones obviously don't.

It was both comical and bizarre that the Cameroon players were also angrily pointing up at the big TV screen, which in fact obviously showed the correct decisions had been made.

It just simply isn't the same or better.

Also, the fact they push that "openly gay" section in that article further pushes the agenda of everyone must be LBGT+ or they're homophobic. Personally, I don't care what someone is, I would judge them on how good they are at playing football.

More goals is part of the parcel when you sacrifice quality, if I wanted more goals I would go and watch the black Prince play out a 10_4 match against GNP.
I agree with price but again... Whilst men's football is overpriced massively, I wouldn't pay 70 quid to watch a women's world Cup match either...


People in general just don't care about women's football... Obviously some do, but it will never be what they want it to be

Men play against men and women play against women.
I find both equally entertaining and of equal value.
Just lately I've been enjoying women's football far more than men's.
It helps a lot if you follow a team and get to know the individual players.

I 100% agree. I’m glad there’s growth across the board in a lot of women’s sports, greater exposure generates interest. Which will hopefully increase investment, participation and sponsorship into the women’s game. This is how the money will seep down to the players, as wages, male or female, is driven by the market.

The types of articles with headline I responded to are annoying to me, hence the rather flippant response on my end.

But imagine how many mistakes would have been made without the help of VAR.
I agree its application needs refinement, but on the whole I think it leads to fairer results.
Maybe they could copy the review system in cricket, where you only get so many reviews.

Isn't cricket already bloody slow enough?

They should simply adopt the TV Match Official approach of rugby, which in general works very well. They monitor the game all the way through and call in things that the ref has missed. They also award tries but can ask the TMO to confirm if there is any doubt. It's a lot fucking simpler to award a goal in football than a try arising from a ruck that is over the line.
The problem will be that a penalty could be awarded for every ball going into the box (especially at set pieces), because there are so many wrestling matches going on.

I think they need a better standard of referees in the women's game. Dare i say it, why can't they have some males officiating, if the men's game can have female refs? Not that the majority of L1 refs are any better!
