People (in general, i mean) seem to blame the police for not locking up the kids who have knives, but they can only arrest and charge them. It's the wankers in the court system who are too lenient.
There was a thing on the radio last week about a woman whose daughter had died in a car crash while being driven by a girl who had been drinking. She was going to parliament to try to get them to change the law to make people who kill while driving face tougher sentences.
The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving (including while unfit through drink or drugs) is 14 years. But when do you EVER see a court hand that down? It's up to Parliament to set the law and the sentencing guidelines. The courts HAVE to be forced to impose tougher sentences for laws to be effective deterrents.

Longer sentences work by removing violent people from the streets for longer, but no evidence people are weighing up sentencing guidelines when committing violent crime.

I think they've started in parts of London but it's a long term fix. Took years for Scotland to bring about those results albeit they're impressive.

I think theres no doubt that following the Scottish initiative is a must but I think the public needs something that will bring about more instant, or that they perceive will bring about more instant results and in reality that is an instant custodial for carrying a knife.
Whether that does work or not we'll only know if it's introduced. Personally I'm in favour because knife crime is clearly a major issue though I wouldn't be surprised if it's not quite the success people think it will be.

Yeah I’d increase the sentences anyway. No reason to be caught with a knife at all really outside of a kitchen other than maybe a pocket knife. If you’re 18 and you’ve got a machete down your trackie bottoms then it should be straight to harsh punishment (hesitate to say prison to be honest because of the long term harm of short sentences but probably best)

They won't need to. If there's a cheaper, easier way to make something, someone will eventually discover it. People can already 3D-print firearms and there's nothing any government in the world can do about it. The range of home-made weapon tutorials on YouTube is already terrifying and growing daily.

No, tech goes where money leads it. That’s why we have great consumer electronics and mostly shit local government IT for example. Or programs for disabled kids.
3D printed guns are more likely to shoot you than anyone else. Having done a bit of 3D printing it really isn’t as straight forward as some suspect. Besides I was downloading the Anarchists Cookbook twenty years ago and the streets aren’t filled with Napalm.
Enriching uranium is also a little bit more complex than making a slug go fast.

I'm aware of that but the technology is improving and getting cheaper all the time. And there are other technologies such as CNC which were prohibitively expensive a few years ago and are now becoming commonplace in home workshops.
You don't 'need' uranium to make a nuclear device. It's used at present because it's much cheaper than a pure fission device. There may be other methods of creating a nuclear explosion which haven't been discovered yet but if there is one thing the human race is very good at it's finding new ways to kill each other.

Have you watched The Wire? I'm on Season 3 at the moment and it's focusing on an experiment being run by a rogue Police Major where's he's virtually legalised drugs in one area of the city. Obviously not a documentary but bloody good tv nonetheless.

I have a theory on the reasons for what's going on with all this violence. I have a friend who works at Fargo, gosford street the 'hub' so to speak of uni students.
He claims he has witnessed a hell of a lot of young Londoners come to the uni as its has rapidly expanded, and along with this, claims that said Londoners have been trying to muscle in on 'patches' run by Cov gangs whether that's drugs, weapons, whatever.
The way these London 'gangsters' work is to recruit younger lads to do the dirty work, a bit similar to this county lines stuff you see on the news recently, the younger recruits so to speak are given free reign to do what they want weapon wise to take over the 'turf'or whatever. Would make sense being as there has never been this amount of knife related violence in this city, whereas in London you have an issue with someone, it's stab them not fight them

It sounds plausible but other cities are seeing similar if not worse increases in crime and they aren't university cities so as far as the nationwide problems go there must be other factors at play.
I'm fairly sure the problems in Tile Hill over the last year or so are local beefs though what you say would make sense with regard to what is going on up Gosford, a lot of which is going unreported in the media from what I've heard.

I agree wholeheartedly, there are many reasons at play, im struggling to see an end to it anytime soon unfortunately
As for Tile Hill and Willenhalls etc, i agree it has to be local, but that kind of stuff has been going in for years all across the country unfortunately. The level of violent crime were seeing at the minute is i feel a national emergency.
Also as for gosford street, that place is almost a no go area at the moment. Always thought there isn't a need for 27 different barber shops in one street, not hard to figure out these are a front for more than a short back and sides

partly right.
the council had a deal with London councils which meant 15% of houses go to London people who they dont want basically. this includes, kids expelled from school. this was a few years ago. since then the London kids have come up, they have started a gang called rb7 this gang run the drugs. most are Somalian and if you go on youtube and search rb7 Coventry you’ll see it
