From what I saw of Chaplin I didn't rate him in the slightest but one thing I find frustrating with this transfer is he basically joined us to play football as he'd been a bit part player for Portsmouth. I don't think anyone was convinced he looked the part in League 1. To then make a move to a club at a higher level seems a bit stupid... Aside from the financial benefit. Will likely find himself in a position like McNulty I imagine in 12 months, not playing and sent out on loan.

Trouble we had last season was that we were held to ransom. We needed a striker, Pompey knew it, and we had to spend big money (for us / this level). Let's hope it doesn't happen again. That's why you need to try to get your replacement in first, I guess.

Yes he's left here scored 1 in 15 at Reading nearly all sub appearances and was frozen out, then moved to hibs and scored 8 in 17.

Hardly had the game time to prove anything elsewhere, he is a very good player and helped us get promoted, unsure why you have such a bad attitude towards the lad

He came and asked me to leave and that's something he wanted to do.

I have mixed feelings on this transfer, and I’m just going to mind dump:

— I didn’t want us to sell Chaplin, he’s a good young player who will improve and all it took was one decent half season and his value doubles.

BUT,

— My first choice ST going into this season would be Hiwula as he got more goals

— To double the investment we got softens the blow

— He wanted to go, therefore, he had to go

— He possibly could’ve suited a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 if we played the right kind of football, but I suppose it may not have been the best fit? Only time would tell.

If we can get Tyler Walker on a permanent deal, I’m a happy man. It’s over to MR and recruitment to make good of the situation

Incorrect, the quote directly from Robins states that the funding (shortfall) from the owners will be to cover the budget for this season.

All money he gets from player sales adds to his budget.

Which budget though? the one set by SISU/directors to run the finances in total or the internal playing budget agreed to be available to MR or the one set by the EFL under SCMP. Could be very different things

They can only spend 60% of the transfer money on the playing budget. so not all money can go on playing squad

MR isnt actually stating anything new in saying SISU would cover any shortfall, they have been doing that for a number of years 2016 £530k 2017 £500k 2018 £500k - some of which has been repaid and all of which carries interest (11%+). You would assume that will continue on the same basis. Right now SISU can not contemplate failure on the pitch (success being at least staying in the upper level of L1 or better) because that will increase the need for their funding

They are covering a budget no better than last year if you accept what MR said recently, and part of that is because of the move to St Andrews, but the club can only utilise up to 60% of SCMP budget turnover or player sales. Obviously there are things like certain young players being excluded from that, hence the increased reliance on youth. However any additional funding looks like funding day to day running of the club that would largely have been covered by the bigger proportion of matchday income last season.

We wont actually know how much SISU have funded the club for the coming season until February 2021

1. Chaplin is too slow over the first 10 yards (surprising for a man of his height and build)
2. He had a poor positional sense - not just too deep but often the wrong place. He was the only forward not involved in the Hiwula goal against Southend because he was way out on the touchline where Bayliss already was - to cite one example
3. Wobbly first touch - bad for a striker
4. You can be short, but he is too short for a striker if you also lack the skills 1-3 above

If he comes good, then good for him, but he would not be our turn key for success. Take the money and run

Poor positional sense because when he came on it was to replace bright or another midfielder and he would play number 10, something you can see he didn't have he is a striker that would benefit of a big man and if you think his movement is poor I suggest you actual go games rather than watching highlights pretty much game in he would make a bunch of good runs and not be found .

Asked if he will get the Chaplin money to reinvest in the team, Robins told CoventryLive: “No, not necessarily.

“I have not asked for that and I don’t necessarily need that.

It's not surprising but slightly disappointing as although we have to be compliant with FFP regulations, I thought we'd use a proportion of the money to reinvest.

There was talk of a possible permanent move. I think we enquired but given how highly rated Walker is at Forest I assume the asking price was way out of reach. The loan move will almost certainly involve a loan fee though given the level of interest in him but given MR's comments I assume there's room for this already within the budget.

10 goals at the age of 22 for Barnsley in his first season in the championship would be a great return

If we were trying to buy Walker for 500k for example and they see we have just sold Chaplin so have more that 500k may become 800k if Robins is bragging about having it all to spend

You're right. Similar to last year after we sold McNulty for over a million portsmouth knew that and could charge us more for Chaplin.
