Transfer Rumour What is it with shooting? (2 Viewers)

Now, I dont want this to cascade in to a "Robins' out" thread. I also dont want people.to think that's where I'm aiming with this as that's not where I'm going.
With that said, it's a reoccurring theme we seem to be having with Robin's. As a player, Robin's was a pretty handy striker, so why can he not get his team to fucking shoot. We play some great football at times and easily matched a premier league team tonight, in all departments apart from fucking shooting. They were relentless, every single forward player tonight wanted to rip the net apart with their shot, ok, they stuck about 20 in the stands, but they got 3 goals. Their keeper never broke a sweat. Easiest ge of his career tonight.
Same against Southend, bosses the game, kept the ball for huge periods, only 1 goal to show and almost got pegged back. Same as with Gillingham. 0-0 (granted 1 of the 3 disallowed goals should of stood) against a team EVERY other team has put 5 past.
Where is our passion to want to score goals. Like McNulty, he wanted goals, Arma the same, who do we have that wants it? Not a single player on the pitch tonight looked like they wanted to shoot, let alone score! Why? What's going wrong? Is it mental? A confidence thing? Just not good enough up front? Is this tiki taka stuff Robin's has us playing too indirect and going against us? I just dont get it.


*Edit, as a side post, I dont want to sound negative because we played very well tonight and I really enjoyed an evening in Watford with my lad, just pointing out an reoccurring thing that has been an issue for many months now. And ultimately, the difference between a win and a loss tonight (or promotion or not last season).

An improvement on nothing is hardly an improvement.

Look at the 11 goals. 4 came against a L2 team that made 6 changes. They're clearly putting the league priority. We put 4 past a L2 U23s. Dont read too much in to that.
Of the remaining 7.
1 was a penalty. Godden.
Westbrooke - Midfield
Hyam - CH
Rose - CH
Shipley - Midfield
Kastneer - RW/Forward
Hiwula - LW/Forward
Not like we have strikers queuing up to smash them in which is the point I'm trying to make.

Some valud points there PTG..... but that's one if the many difference between PL and L1, I suppose. Let's hope we pick up a few habits from Watford and pepper the goal a bit more v Oxford, but Robins aint doing much wrong and we have been relatively ruthless with the chances we've created this season from excellent build up play. IMO this will take us far this season.

Apart from the first 20 minutes we hardly “matched” Watford. We were outplayed and didn’t get into any real shooting positions. Baka had a few moments where he could have pulled the trigger, but he was woeful all night. The front 3 offered nothing really all night. We have our limitations, that why we’re in League 1. The goals in the league will come. It’s like Cov fans just need a reason to moan.

100% agree with the OP don’t know what it is, we played okay last night moved the ball round across the defence through midfield lot of possession but I don’t recall one shot or header on target, O’Hara had one that went wide of a post first half and that’s it, Watford keeper didn’t have a save to make, we are work in progress and need to look at our forward set up, having said that thought we did okay despite the 0-3 result.

There does seem at times to be a reluctance to shoot, possibly because MR does favour the possession play. But he also has to remember we don't have strikers of the quality Man City and Liverpool do and we can't expect them to be as clinical and maybe need to take a punt every now and again and test a keeper out - they could fumble or whatever and not only to we possibly get a goal it affects their confidence.

Having said that we've had a good start so it's not working too badly plus I think Allen and O'Hare may be more willing to get shots away from around the edge of the area, and hopefully Shipley will bag a few - it seems to be one of his stronger points.

But my point is, football is a stats game, and the fact is, if you only have 1 shot in 90mins you will only ever have the opportunity to score 1 goal. The more shots you have, the more chances you have to score. As shown by Watford last night, their quality wasnt anything amazing, but they peppered our goal continuously in the 2nd half, and they got their reward. Just because we dont have the quality, does that mean we just dont bother?? Just throw the towel in now and forget the league as were not as rich as Sunderland or as Strong as Pompey? No, we try. I'm not asking for Man City strikers, just strikers willing to hit a shot at goal when they have sight of it. I'm not asking for every shot to be a goal, I'm not even expecting every shot to be on target.

I agree to some extent, but there's a difference between a genuine shooting chance and shooting speculatively. I agree with the first, disagree with the second.

You can say each shot is a chance to score, but if it's very unlikely to go in it's also giving the ball away to the opposition which gives them an opportunity. Would you agree with a player playing an outrageous pass with very little chance of success and likely to give the ball away, or keep it and look for a better opportunity? It's the same thing, just you're aiming at a net instead of a player.

I'd say it's lack of confidence.
They know they aren't very good at shooting and will miss 75% of the time, so to avoid the personal embarassment, they elect not to shoot.
They can't win really since if they shoot and miss, everyone will say "why didn't he pass it?", and if they pass it and nothing comes from it, everyone will say "why didn't he shoot?".

The best teams in any given league tend to have the best defences too.

Under Pressley, we could score 4 goals at home and still draw games. I’d much prefer to build upon solid defensive foundations than a strong attack and leaky defence.
