Foreign players who never really made it... (2 Viewers)

From the Isaias thread I’ve being trying to think of other foreign players we signed over the years that came in with a big fanfare or future talent but never made it.

One that springs to mind is Alex Yevtushok.

Yevtushok was signed by Premier League club Coventry City in 1997, becoming the first Ukrainian footballer to play in the competition (bedsides Andrei Kanchelskis, who decided to play for Russia).[2] In his debut, against Manchester United, he was replaced just after 30 minutes in a 1–3 loss.[3] He had two other appearances and was released after Coventry City escaped relegation on the final matchday.

Roger van gool
Had a decent career abroad and played for the Belgian national team, but looked very average here.

Amadeu Bakayoko
Maxime Biamou

I know this is probably tongue in cheek but no one could say Max was a failure. He came from non-league on hardly any wages, had a goal of the season competition by himself, scored an overhead kick in a play off semi final to send us to Wembley and gives his all every time he plays. What more can you ask for a bloke plucked from non-league.

The majority signed from South America under Strachan. I remember having huge hopes for Laurent Delorge. When we signed him apparently pretty much every big team in Europe were tracking him. In fairness I think he broke his leg in his first reserve outing.

Yes very much tongue in cheek,
But it’s very telling that you didn’t attempt to defend Bakayoko in any way!

As for non league, Stuart Pearce came from non league, scored the odd screamer and gave 100%. And let’s not forget that almost all of Biamou’s appearances for us were in the old division 4, which is only 1 league above non league!

There is an European Cup game... think it was the semi final that ended 3-3 against Cloughie's Forest... and Van Gool was a beast that night. Just didn't happen for him.

We had 2 players from Honduras, Ivan Guerrero and Javier Martinez in the same season under Strachans reign, I think both were internationals which got everyones attention. One only made a few appearances, the other barely touched the first team squad. And would Moldovan be classed as never making it although he is a legend for that one goal against Villa in the Cup ? :cigar:

And thanks :) I've just hit the Wiki page for Coventry's Overseas players. List of Coventry City F.C. international footballers - Wikipedia
There are some I've never heard of, even though they have made at least 1 senior appearance

Agree about Jean Guy Willamme. Saw his debut for the reserves playing along side Gary Breen. The pair of them looked brilliant together and think Strachan at the time said you could have "set it to music", they really did look good that night.

After that remember seeing him at home against West Ham with big John Hartson crashing into him for 90 minutes. Don't recall seeing him in a City shirt again (could be wrong) and the next I hear is off back to France. Real shame as I thought apart from the physical side he had a lot to offer.

Wasn’t Jairo Martínez the guy who ran into the stand and up the stairs after scoring at an away game? Barnsley maybe.

Nick Proschwitz on loan.
Amazingly three years before us he was signed by Hull for £2.6 million.
Last heard of being sacked by SC Paderborn 07 for exposing himself to a woman after a late night drinking session.

Perdomo was an outstanding player. He wasn’t fit and came to us in a final attempt to save his career.

It’s the anniversary of Regis Genaux’s birth today. He only started 4 times for us and complained of a Scottish mafia keeping him out at City. Moved to Udinese.
