They play each other tonight and on the radio earlier they said the police presence before the game will be the biggest for a football match in the UK, larger than even Celtic v Rangers. A presenter said it is the most fierce rivalry in a match he has ever witnessed. Only 2 thousand Saints fans are going, but they will be escorted to and from the ground by an army of police.
I knew it was a tasty derby but not as bad as that !

Each team takes a couple of hundred fans from the Isle of Wight as well. Trouble is, they usually travel together on the hovercraft or ferry. Lots of rivalry on board but as yet, pretty good behaviour and banter. I used to go across on the hovercraft and chat away, telling everyone that I was a Cov fan. Some really nice comments from many of them - both sides.

On the radio it said it's the most intense hatred between 2 clubs in Britain. Someone has been to all the local derbies in the world as a reporter/journalist, and he said this one ranks high on the list as most intimidating atmosphere etc.
Remember our derbies at Wolves years ago ? They could be " lively" couldn't they ?

Personally, I'd say that's absolute bollocks!
I'd say there are several bigger derbies in England let alone Celtic v Rangers. I know there is fierce rivalry between the two but it sounds like they're trying to hype it up.

Only quoting what they said on the radio. I too thought they were over reacting, but Sam Matterface the commentator who is a Saints fan recounted experiences between both clubs over the years. And the guests on the radio show were surprised at the hatred there.

They’re equating aggro with it being the biggest derby. Take away the off the pitch stuff and it’s nowhere near the biggest derby.

The reason for the hatred is all supposed to stem from people in Southampton crossing a picket line to break a strike at the docks. Except it seems to be an urban myth and never actually happened.

Danny Mills whipped up the argument on the radio. He said it's nowhere near the biggest derby etc. We all know that anyway, it's more about dislike etc. The media is loving it and all eyes will be on Fratton Park tonight hoping it kicks off.

telegraph are determined to do the same with Sunderland. Keep bringing them up and trying to make it bigger than it really is. Then when it kicks off they'll say its nothing to do with them.

I always thought of Saints fans as a bit of a bunch of wet wipes, so hard to imagine them being "fiery".

my friend who's a Southampton fan is massively critical of how poor support is, is always moaning about no passion and how St Marys is a library

Not even close to being the biggest derby. Down there yeah but anywhere else? Laughable. If they're talking about crowd trouble wise...?

West Ham v Millwall?

Got to be a chance this could be a tipping point for Kenny Jackett - bound to be a backlash after this result

Crawley now through on pens v Stoke. Had a feeling they'd beat Stoke who are a poor side. Another manager to be sacked no doubt ?
