Out of curiosity I decided to go through and take our shooting stats from the last 5 games and put them together. It's fair to say there is a bit of a problem.

Coventry vs Tranmere: 19 shots, 1 shot on target, no goals.
Rotherham vs Coventry: 13 shots, 2 shots on target, no goals.
Coventry vs Doncaster: 23 shots, 5 shots on target, 1 goal.
Coventry vs AFC Wimbledon: 10 shots, 4 shots on target, 2 goals.
Burton Albion vs Coventry: 14 shots, 7 shots on target, no goals.

So in total across our last five games we have scored 3 goals. In that time we have had 79 shots. Out of 79 shots only 19 were on target. That's currently producing a 3.8% chance of scoring a goal when we shoot.

Against Bolton (where many were quick to blame the ref) we had 24 shots. 7 were on target. 0 goals.

Mr Robins, you may want to have a look at this darling.

Just out of interest, how'd you come to that calculation? Surely it should be 19 shots on target divided by 79 shots = 24% chance of scoring?

Apologies, the wording was slightly off. The calculation was 3 goals out of 79 shots. The 3.8% chance of scoring is still correct.

I suppose it should, with the 3.8% being the conversion rate.

Isn't that what training is for? Can we say we can't blame the coaching for passing going astray? Or for goalkeeping errors? Or poor free-kicks and corners? In fact, is there any point in them training at all?

I'd say a 3.8% conversion rate, with a 24% chance of scoring. Which still backs up your point, we are very poor in front of goal.

All very well, but he's not playing. What about Godden, Hiwula, Baka, Biamou etc - they're the ones that matter.

So you think that Mark Robins, who was a striker, doesn’t train his forwards well in shooting practice?

Fuck me I've read some shit on here in my time but this just might take the biscuit.

Stats are interesting, but the quality of the strike more important imo.

Take yesterday, our shot on target was a terrible tame free kick, yet i was out of my seat 4 times not for that one, but for two headers, a penalty appeal and the one which hit the post, none of which are counted as on target.

Excellent point.
For training to be of any use it has to simulate real game situations.
The goal is 8 yards wide (24 feet), it's not a difficult thing to hit.

It didn't pay off with Chaplin.
I've given up on Hiwula. Godden may improve but it's not looking good so far.
Robins needs to get Ponticelli out of Tranmere where he can't get any minutes (even when Tranmere are losing, they won't bring him off the bench), and get him at a club that will play him, so at least we have another option waiting in the wings.

I heard we was in for him last season mate but deal broke down at the last minute,he didn’t do sod all in the champ but is scoring At Peterborough who create plenty something we don’t do they play him in a 41212 with Ivan Toney up front.

Their attacking force is scary, have some real quality up front with Madison as the number 10

Sometimes people that are good at something naturally aren't the best teachers because they don't fully understand what it is they're doing differently. It just happens naturally for them.

That's why so many of the top managers and coaches weren't absolutely top class players - it didn't come naturally to them so they had to learn how to do it hence why they're better at teaching others how to do it.

We don’t have the players to play with width we haven’t all season Jobello for me wasn’t upto it & we’ve seen what we have been getting from Hiwula from the left we seem to have put all our eggs in one basket in 433 with no players fit to cover both sides if we got any injuries (Jobello) or if anyone dipped in form (Hiwula),Godden had successful season last year playing in a 2 weve done what we done with Chaplin gone against that & used him on his own the wide players have offered him sod all in support.We hindered O’Hares influence pushing him wide right Sunday he looks the perfect number 10.We don’t even have a plan B which we change to a 2 upfront in games so I can’t see how we use it from the start of games so I’m wasting my time even thinking about it we bring on strikers when we are behind like Baka and put him wide left in the 433 we did the same with Biamou at Bolton.

Was never gonna pay off with Chaplin Pompey fans all told us he needs a partner to play off we tried to turn him into a number 10 or upfront on his own all 5ft of him.

The annoying thing for me is Hiwula, he misses gilt edge chances and should easily be up there as one of the leading scorers in the league so we are creating and he atleast is getting into good positions to score so the tactic is basically working, it’s obviously the final product not happening. Apart from a fit again Jodie Jones I don’t as we are currently see who can fill that role, O’Hare perhaps but he would be a loss in midfield at the moment, get Jamie Allen fit and Kelly back perhaps that could work.

Just looked at that stats website - found some interesting comparison
Peterborough:
shots: 171
On Target 73 (43% total shots)
Goals 28 (38% of shots on target)

ipswich
Shots: 146
On target: 60 41%
Goals: 21 - 35%

us
Shots: 166
On target: 58- 35%
Goals: 16 - 28%

Suggests we’re around 10% down on the league leaders and top scorers.

we’re letting ourselves down big style - of course this isn’t showing how the shots are coming, we have a number of tame free kicks on target - love to see the clear chances to goals stat
