It really can't do any harm. He's not playing there either and here at least he'd be getting game time in U23's if MR doesn't think he fits - Tranmere don't have a reserves.

We have good possession and lots of chances. The thing we seem to lack is someone who puts chances in the back of the net. He has done that on a regular basis during his time here at various levels. Whatever his other limitations if he's in the box and putting away those chances he'd be adding to the team. Only way he could show if he could do that is to be on the pitch. Everyone else ahead of him in the pecking order (apart from maybe Biamou due to injury) has had an opportunity to take on the mantle and not stepped up.

If a player who can't get into the Tranmere team and has shown next to nothing in 1st team mens football is the answer. The question is totally the wrong one. Especially if we want to be top 6.

The obsession is madness.

Have you ever seen him play?

The only thing I would say Nick *assuming Godden is out for a while). is we have Baka and Hiwula (with Max still getting match fit( then Bremang. We are one more injury/suspension away from cupboard bare, so having Ponticelli at least getting fit in the U23s (if he isn't getting match practice up there) as a precaution. if we can get him to shed a bit of timber there is/was a finisher there, even if his game needs to develop.

He might be unproven but our current attacking options have been proven. Proven at being utterly shit.

I don't for one minute think he is the answer, but when there is a recall option I don't think it would do any harm.

I’ve read reports of quotes from MR saying that he’s already looking for a Baka replacement to play with Godden in the January window. Might just be psychological to get one of the others firing etc.

Basically said that Baka has all the parts & attributes needed but isn’t putting it together & needs to be more aggressive & when defenders occupy his space, he needs to find more space etc.

In 2017/18 (last time he was fit) he was our joint fourth highest scorer, despite playing way fewer minutes than everyone else.

In terms of goal per minutes that season he was our best performing striker, including McNulty.

He's worth a try given how everyone else has done.

Thanks for finally admitting that stat means fuck all

Robins has deemed Ponticelli not at the right level. Tranmeres manager evidentially agrees. Most people who have seen him play also agree he wasn’t up to the level. But a few still hold onto a quote from god knows where about ‘he’s the best natural finisher in the history of world football’. Get over it lads, he’s not the messiah.

It does mean fuck all

Any stat in isolation is worth fuck all. You could say a striker has scored 100 career goals - looks quite good. But depends on how many matches he's played. What level he's scored them at. If he's played over 1000 games at L2 level it's less impressive.

Same with minutes per goal. Taken in isolation it can be meaningless, like with Mick Harford. However, in conjunction with other stats to provide context it adds to the analysis. For example, with Ponti if you say he scored 6 in 26 appearances that season it doesn't look great. Add in the goals per minute stat because a large proportion of those appearances were as a sub and it adds context and shows the basic stats to be skewed.

The more info you have the better the analysis. Like how many minutes did he play? Were they as a starter or as a sub? Were they 20 minute appearances or two minutes in injury time? How many different games did he score in? What was his shot conversion rate?
