I work with a tiny charity that manages to do it once every 30 seconds on average. It’s very ambitious but with climate change we have to be.

There's ambitious, then there's this. I'm not saying we can't plant x amount of trees. We should.

But to make this "promise" is another Labour Mathematical cock up I'm afraid.

Anyone arguing otherwise, is simply deluded. 3 per second, for 20 years straight. Really? If they said until 2100, it'd maybe have legs...

1000 teams - 2 people per team. Plant a tree every minute for 7/8 hours a day.

2000 new jobs - that’s 480000 planted in a day. Have more people doing it... create more jobs and multiply up/ adjust the timings if it takes longer.
It’s a rudimentary calculation but doable if the infrastructure is there.

Why do you need a machine to plant a sapling? 3 men and 3 spades will do it. You seem to be working on the premise that that it’s going to be down to one single object that’s got to do this work solidly on its own over 20 years. You need to add a dose of reality to your thinking.

As many as you want though typical densities range from 1000 to 2500 trees per hectare.

Let's go for 2,500 and really go for it.

One hectare is 0.003861022 square mile.

Etc

I have a grand total of 3088817.27 square miles for this tree planting escapade.

The area of the UK is around 94000 square miles.

For someone that works in the sector, I find the so called tree planting policies ludicrous. Trees are part of the answer in tacking climate change (and not just carbon sequestration, but also biodiversity and flood management), and not the absolute fix as the idiot politicians seem to think.

Finding land to plant large areas of woodland is very difficult for a number of reasons e.g. land values for development, taking land out of food production.
Also, tree planting can be detrimental to biodiversity if woodland is created in areas where other priority habitats are more beneficial e.g. chalk grassland, heathland.

Number of trees per ha. - normally range from 1100- 1800 depending on the type of woodland being created, soil type and resource availability and species mix.

For economic reasons, trees are normally planted as whips and not of any size. Also most tree planting is done by hand.

Pound for pound it’s the best climate change defence we’ve got. I couldn’t give a shiny shite how people feel. We’ll need legislation. Those who are about the feels will be denying it anyway. Does that include ownership and current and historic use?

Environmental data such as soil type, agricultural grade, geology and flood risk (including flood manatassrts), conservation designation, environmental stewardship agreements, publicly available.

in the first instance it would worth contacting the Forestry Commission or the Woodland Trust. Also worth referring to local Biodiversity Action Plans.

I may have made the mistake of assuming this was a serious ish question. Ecologist hourly rates may apply
