LEE Carsley has been promoted to Andy Thorn’s back room staff after a hugely successful first year of coaching at Coventry City’s Academy.

The former Sky Blues skipper will take charge of a newly established ‘development squad’ which will be based at Ryton and bridge the gap between the Academy and the first team, as well as helping to coach the senior players with Steve Harrison and the manager.

“Carso’s coming up and he’ll be in and around it for match days so he’ll be with me on a Saturday,” revealed the City boss of the 38-year-old, who has guided the club’s Under-18s to second place in the FA Premier Academy League.

“I have known Cars for a long time now – from our time at Everton – and he needed to go and work with the youth team first of all to learn because standing on the side is totally different to playing.

“I spoke to him when he finished playing last year and he felt it would be really difficult to handle players he had just finished playing with.

“So he’s been away from them for a year and he’ll come back in, having benefitted more by working with the youth team.

“He’s got a feel for it now and he’s a good lad. He knows the game and has great experience, and he’ll work the development squad and with the first team because you can’t operate with just one coach.

“He’ll also keep an eye on the youth team and looking at the next group coming into the development squad.”

The development squad will include newly retained apprentices Jordan Willis, Josh Ruffels, Aaron Phillips, Joe Henderson, Will Roberts and Billy Daniels, as well as young pros Shaun Jeffers and Callum Wilson, while the likes of Conor Thomas, Gael Bigirimana and Cyrus Christie are expected to be part of the first team set-up.

However, the squad will play in a league and be supplemented by players who are not getting a game in the first team with the league allowing five over-age players.

“They’ll play in a league, a bit like the reserve league,” said Thorn who is keen to restore a regular reserve-style run-out for players to get fitness and form and push themselves for a place in the first team – a facility the club have not had since the club’s decision to pull out of a reserve league, largely due to financial reasons, under Micky Adams.

“You can play five over age players so it will be like a reserve league as well and it’s important we have that.

“As well as the young boys have done this year it is far too early for all of those boys to come in to the first team.

"But they have gained a lot of experience but this gives them another level to learn before they come in.

“Plus I can keep an eye on their development as well because they will be based at Ryton rather than the Higgs Centre.

“They’ll train twice a day and get stronger and see what it’s about.

"We’ve taken five or six apprentices plus a spill over from the first team which includes Shaun Jeffers and Callum Wilson who will get regular games.

“In an ideal world Jeffers would have been out on loan all season, learning his trade and playing against men.

"But I’ve had to have him in the squad and he’s travelled to more grounds this season than anyone and not really played.”

I think he'll make a great manager. I'm glad there seems to be a development plan for him. He'll benefit, hopefully, we'll benefit!!

No mention of Clark-Harris which further leads to believe these rumours are true...

ANDY THORN was tight-lipped after opting not to offer young goal-machine Jonson Clarke-Harris a new deal to stay at Coventry City.

Prolific Under-18s scorer Clarke-Harris became the club’s youngest ever player to appear in the first team when he went on as a substitute against Morecambe in the Carling Cup last season, aged 16.

The 17-year-old was on stand-by for England Under-18s in March at the same time Jordan Willis was in the squad for the 3-0 victory over Poland.

But, although he is regarded as a bright prospect, Thorn hinted at disciplinary problems.

He said: “He hasn’t been offered a new deal for reasons we can’t go into.”

Sky Blues striker Courtney Richards has also been released.

Where is the hint at disciplinary problems? Could it not also be read as a medical condition?

Wonder how Gregor Rioch and the rest of the academy staff feel about all the academy success being down to Carsley ?

Dont get me wrong I think bringing in Carsley is the right thing to do ......... but I feel Rioch and his staff do not get the recognition they deserve. Where would we have been without the likes of Clarke, Cameron, Christie, Thomas, Bigi etc this season .... none were because of Carsley

I don't read it that way. Rioch seems more than happy to stay in the background and gains great satisfaction from seeing Academey lads get into the 1st team.

I am sure Rioch does SofE but was looking at it from the point of view of the club, AT etc recognising his input as head of the academy. A few good words go a long way.

To be honest so long as there is a good structure from academy, development, first team then i wont lose sleep over it.

Just credit where credit is due

I think the advantage of Carsley over Rioch is that he's been there and done it at the highest level and can impart this knowledge to the players. I just hope we're not grooming him' only for him to go elsewhere and become successful.

In terms of Rioch, his skillset seems to be in identifying and developing young talent, for which I'm sure he receives due recognition and reward. The problem is, the more successful he becomes the greater likelehood he will be enticed to to bigger job.

Dont you think it was part thorns decision to get rid of clarke harris but mostly riochs considering he the one that sees the youngsters day in day out and he and carsley were the ones who stopped playing him in the academy the last 6 or so games! but hey lets blame thorn for everythink! dont you think they have long drawn out meetings like most companys and managements to discuss things in detail before making decisions! its clear the lads done something or has the wrong atitude for him not to progress at the club if his abilitys suggest hes good enough!

Kevin Thornton was won of the most gifted players to come out

That explains a lot. Probably couldn't come to terms with his sexuality and why he was such an angry young drunk

If that was the case you would have to ask yourself why Reading would sign him up on a 2 year contract.

Tbf Otis, opposition scouts are only allowed into watch the games so they would probably have little information about his attitude and performance in training.

I'm sure his agent has told them how well behaved he is.......££££

Back to the point-the lad we've released has his own thread-

AT LAST, A RESERVE TEAM!

I think this has been a massive factor in our under-achievement in the past 5 years. From the very first season, it was obvious that our players coming back from injuries or starting for the first time simply couldn't build up core fitness-often they were much better as a sub than starting, as they just hadn't got a full 90 under their belts. Simpson, Thornton, Baker-many many more were good impact players who just couldn't compete over 90 minutes.

Not only that, there has been no bridge to the first team from the youth side: Jeffers is the latest of numerous players who will have stagnated from lack of matches, whilst the likes of Clarke, Christie and the other youngsters would have been much more wordly-wise of they'd been playing some games with older players in a slightly higher standard than youth level, but without the pressure of the first team. They'd have had a chance to make mistakes and learn from them without it costing the first team.

And also, it's good for competition: you can't put pressure on the man ahead of you in the side by scoring a hatrick in the reserves if you don't have a reserve side!

Of course, it wouldn't have helped Gael or Connor much, as they've been needed in the first team as soon as they graduated-but in the previous seasons, it would have given us an extra 10-15% I reckon. Well done AT!

So, a massive positive. My only question is-if this costs money that SISU haven't been prepared to fund previously, how come they are now-and how come that has got signed off for next season if we don't have a budget yet? :thinking about:
