In stark comparison to their right-sided counterparts, good English left backs continue to be in short supply, a scarcity highlighted by the last five starters at left back or left wing back for the U21’s: James Justin, Jonathan Panzo, Dwight McNeil, Steve Sessegnon and Lloyd Kelly — none of whom are likely to play left back in the long term. Which makes the emergence of Sam McCallum a timely one for the England scouts, and he should expect an international call up for the U21s should he maintain the form he’s showed in the opening half of the campaign.

Currently impressing in a Coventry side pushing for automatic promotion from League One, McCallum began the season second in the pecking order but has since forced his way in and held down his place in the starting XI. Signed in the summer of 2018 from non-league Herne Bay to play a part in the Coventry U23 squad, his development has accelerated rapidly. It looks likely McCallum will be the first graduate of serious note to emerge from Jamie Vardy’s V9 academy. There’s plenty yet to develop in his game, but he’s shown enough potential to catch the attention of recruitment departments higher up the football food chain.

If you go by under the age of 22, English, performing/performed at a decent level and excluding the Premier League you’re hardly going to have a huge pool of players

Emailed two bookies asking for odds on Maddison in 2015 and never got a reply. After he made his England debut I saw someone show a bet slip with odds of 125/1 - I dug out the emails in my sent folder and they were about 3 weeks before that bet was placed so would’ve been the same. Still not over it.

I don’t mean strong physically. I meant more just not a good enough defender. He’s done a fantastic job this season and very happy to have him here and if we went up I think he’d do a job in the championship (probably as cover) but I just don’t see him playing premier league never mind England.

I think macallum is an incredible talent. What sets him apart is his bravery at his age as well as how comfortable he is on the ball. He never shirts an aerial 50/50...and tends to win most. He has the potential to go all the way imo.

He’s started 4 out of Spurs’ last 6 matches in the Premier League after being injured and is only 19? What did you expect?

His positioning is questionable but his athleticism gets him out of trouble. Decent coaching will knock that out of him

Absolutely spot on this London. Was thinking exactly the same thing. Extremely brave never shirks a challenge or a header. Puts himself about but has technique too.

Still a learning footballer but potential definitely there.

It is extremely rare for a CCFC player to reach it to the ‘top’. I had a look around a few weeks ago and in the last 15 years there’s 3 players who have consistently played at the top level

With only about 30% just in the match day squads in the Premier League English its only going to get tougher and tougher

By the way, I’ve been a little bit negative about McCallum on this thread but only in the context of him becoming the very top 1%... I think what he’s done this year is brilliant and what others have said above is true, he is very brave in collisions but his stamina is a big issue and he really isn’t quick, not sure how people are seeing that?

Honest question have you seen the lad play ? Or constantly bombing up & down that left wing ? He leaves players for dead WITH the ball at feet

To be fair at 19/20 Ashley Cole was playing for arsenal in the Premier league... Its not a great comparison anyway as Ashley Cole is one of the worlds best left backs of the last 20 years

Understand the sentiment as we’ve all seen numerous young players fail to improve - as they said on the Nii Lamptey show, Jonjo Shelvey by that token should have been one of England’s greatest ever players. A lot of it, though, is mindset and I remember Robins really hammering this when McCallum came into the team last season. He’s smart and has a willing to learn, which sets him off on the right track.

Got a decent chance to get to the top flight but not just yet; championship next season (hopefully with us) and see if his development continues. I thought he would struggle to get into the team this year but once Mason got injured he has seized his chance. Playing as a wing back he is bound to get caught out of position occasionally but I like the way hyam covers and talks him through tough periods.
Still got to work on his speed (if anything this is the one area that might hold him back). He is good in the air (really improved on his few games last season) and decent in the tackle. He needs a little more confidence in taking a player on and tends to look back rather than forward when he first receives the ball. His long throw is an asset as his ability to score with a long shot.
He seems a well grounded lad keen to learn more; this is his breakthrough season and many of us thought Mason (myself included) would be our player of the year (based on the first month or so of the season). But since McCallum came into the team we can honestly say we haven’t missed Mason. Great to have two quality left backs. In robins he has a manager that clearly trusts him and I believe he is well well supported by his family. Everything is in place for him to have a successful career: how successful will be down to his application, a bit of luck and making the right move at the right time.
