In these times of talk of new sites being found and prospect of a“new” ground (don’t laugh) I looked at the Portman Road stadium, very much like the old HR design for me a proper football ground, four sided separate stands and a surprising capacity of just over 30000. Doesn’t seem to take the room of the modern bowl shaped type. Is this the type of stadium design for us and where in Cov is there a suitable site ?

Cant beat the old style ground for atmosphere but going back to your question it should say where could we build a new stadium without the help of Coventry Council

Definitely not MK or Rotherham, but not much worse than the smaller flat pack type. Took a lot less time to get a drink before the game than most stadia.

Like most have said, Portman Road is a big classic four sided ground. I love grounds like these and everyday are they better than the bland bowls like the Ricoh, MK, riverside and Walkers etc.
Great location too, in centre and five minutes from station, l love everything about it, even have friendly fans on top.

Would love an old fashioned stadium like Highfield Rd the hawthorns or bramall lane be built on the ikea site. Nice and central, good transport and parking along with numerous pubs and food nearby. There is only two things stopping it. Money and the council but would be the perfect site and put a nail in the coffin of the wasps nest

I did a cut out of the Shrewsbury ground and overlaid it on Ikea and I reckon it’d fit.
Good transport though? I shudder to think what the ring road would be like. You’d need some solid Park and Rides around the edges of the city and a concerted effort to get people to go by train/bus I reckon. Not at all insurmountable though. You’d have to build parking underneath it I reckon, which I’d guess would mean a bowl. Ready made fans village in the SkyDome as well.

Can't see it myself but would a great location similar to Newcastle and Millennium Stadium as in Heart of the City. You might know this Shmmeee but who owns land like Central Six, Alvis Retail Park and Coventry Business Park where Go Outdoors located, all good locations for a stadium.
I have mentioned the bottom end of Hearsall Common before where the fair goes which I don’t think is common land, might be wrong though, but just across the road there’s an industrial estate and there are two quiet large empty warehouses just round the corner, you can’t see just how large but I’m sure with a bit of jigging around there could be.

Portman Road is an oddity though. Unless they changed things recently, the land the ground sits on is owned by the local town council and the club owns the stands that sit on that land. Good job for them that they havent got a council that thinks along the lines of CCC.

The cov local plan earmarks such sites for housing, with no reference at all to the necessary increase in local public services. Planning in this country is pathetic
It won’t come through CCC, Ryton is not in their control! Plenty of options on the fringes, do not rule it out.
