I was watching a TV programme earlier today and saw a model boat which had been manufactured by the small company my dad worked for in Wickford, Essex. I knew the company had folded in the late 70's, but I thought I'd Google them anyway, just out of interest.
I found a great page and read through it, remembering the place just as my dad used to describe it. Imagine my surprise when further down the page, the author had put a link to a YouTube video from the late 1960's of a 'factory tour'. I followed the link and 10 minutes into the video, there was my dad! Actually on film! I was ecstatic! He died in 1971 when I was just 18 and all I had to remind me of him were two black and white photos. Now I have him on video.
By the way, I didn't get to know my dad until I was 15 and then to lose him a short time later was a huge wrench, so this grainy cine film on YouTube is precious to me.
Just thought I'd share some good news.

My Dad worked at Morris Engines off Stoney Stanton Road.
Maybe I should check if there is a factory tour of that place.
That was a huge factory though.

HH, one of the sweetest yet poignant posts I have seen on here. I'm 60 years old this year but the child in me still misses the love, support, and friendship of my Dad (and who brought me the greatest gift of all into my life - Coventry City). Best wishes.

It was still called Morris when my Dad retired in the 60's.
Although they did make engines for Morris and Austin.
All I know about what my Dad did was that he machined the flywheels.
I went into the factory once and he showed me the machine he worked on.
It was so noisy in there, I don't know how any human being could stand it.
Incredibly loud metallic clanging non-stop all day.
No-one wore ear protection because it was considered 'sissy'.
No wonder he was always in a bad mood when he came home.

Thanks dubed. I wasn't looking for likes and compliments when I posted this, but the response has really got to me. I just want to say 'thanks' for all the responses on here. To find your dad on video when you're nearly 67 is just amazing. I was just so lucky that someone from many years ago converted a grainy old cine film onto a DVD and uploaded it to YouTube. I'm now looking forward to visiting my older, totally disabled brother on Saturday and showing him. I phoned him yesterday and he could barely speak. He was choked up, just as I was.

Would be interesting to see.
We used to go there to explore the air-raid shelters and to collect conkers as there were several large horse-chestnut trees near the sports fields.
