Who else is working from home now?

Just been told we are for the foreseeable, been allowed to take whatever I want from the office to set up.

Share your workstation, give tips for staying productive, share funny stories about video meetings, generally stay sane in here.

Still haven’t quite got my head around the fact that this is my life now. Feels like I’ve got a day off, any tips for staying productive welcomed.

I popped to Ikea at lunchtime to get a desk for home thinking there would be nobody in there. Loads of people wandering aimlessly around and buying random crap, people really aren't listening to the advice.

Was plenty of meatballs though so grabbed a couple of bags of those for the freezer.

I just have a single monitor with a docking station for laptop

I struggle to get fully focused to work and would much prefer to actually be at work.

I think you would need to get yourself into a work mindset in the morning.

Get up, have a shower and do what you would usually. Get dressed (even if its not your work stuff) and then find somewhere comfy to work.

When I was self employed I found it hard to differentiate between work time and normal time so I would find myself checking an email at 10pm and then emerging at 4am when I have become engrossed in some code or something.

I saw something called the Pomodoro technique too - Productivity 101: An Introduction to The Pomodoro Technique

You basically work for 25 minutes, stop for 5 minutes.

Can get apps as well that will work with it and block social media etc in "work" time.

Also apps like the Forest one which mean you dont piss about on your phone all day.

I got a bit geeky and linked todoist with my bank, if I set myself tasks for the day then everytime I close one off it transfers 50p to a side-pot. Makes it a bit of an achievement / challenge.

In all honesty, that's all gone to shit since this Coronavirus stuff came out though.

Today was my first day. The VPN that we need to access to do some backend admin stuff wasn't built to cope with the demand a global pandemic may cause so it's been a bit frustrating, but on the massive upside I know exactly which arses have been on the toilets I use and Undercover Boss USA is a surprisingly good background noise replacement for the inane witterings of idiots

Finding it difficult. I'm a bit lazy anyway at working from home encourages that.

When I'm in the zone I get more done but the 'zones' are about 3 times a day for about an hour.

SBT is a massive procrastination tool!

I'm in the same boat as @Liquid Gold with having Mrs OSB WFH with me. She's been off since we got back from skiing 10 days ago, as her boss was concerned we came through Geneva Airport. Day 3 WFH for me.
We get up at the normal time, at our "desks" (shared dining table) by 8am, largely leave each other to get on with our day, get out of each other's way when we both have Skype/Teams meetings, have lunch together, drown in tea, etc!
I get more done than when i am in the office as there are fewer distractions in the way of office chatter, pretty girls walking past, etc!
Only one who doesn't seem to get it is the cat ...

I worked from home for 14 years - you do fuck all compared to being in the office. I was paid £6,000 a year as well for the added burden of utility bills

Went into work and grabbed by gear today so I have a proper set up. Thought being away from my team would be easier and more productive but I now have WhatsApp desktop, Skype, Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, emails, phone, texts and messenger to deal with.

Going to be an interesting few months to say the least.

WFH is fine if you have a lot of work on and just need peace and quiet from your colleagues.

However if you are light on work then it can be rather soul destroying and you ending up thinking more because your mind isn't focused on work.

Im fine at the moment but thousands won't be. Mental health is a bastard.

I hate working from home at best of times, now the added bonus next week of the missus and my two 2 kids all sharing desk space and sucking life out of WiFi. Gonna be a very long 12 weeks. Bit worried about all our morale and mental health.... so need to plan fun stuff around all this mayhem.

WFH doesn't really change how I do my job given that I'm the only one based up here anyway, the rest of the company is down south. Just means not sitting in a couple of hours (on a good day) of traffic and not having to pay for the dogs daycare.

Only real difference is I've been told not to do any site visits without a directors sign off. But I've not had anything thats needed one anyway - find a lot of site visits tend to be more because someone has demanded it or a manger thinks it looks good rather than actually being needed to do the job.

Popped to Ikea today to get some office furniture and I need to visit the office and some point to pick some kit up but then I'm all set.

I've been working from home for years.
They actually require it because we have to be available for production support and so need to be available at short notice 24/7.
I'm actually much more productive, since I get more sleep, don't have to drive to the office, which saves time, wear on my car and polluting exhaust.
Work hours are flexible and I often logon at the weekend for a few hours if my workload backs up.
My computer is in my bedroom and I can literally set the alarm for 7:15 and be working at 7:30.

Yeah very true.

I'm fine and am for 99% of the time but if it can happen to me without much to worry about then I know more people will definitely be struggling.

I don't work from home, but I have worked alone (+ dog) in my workshop/office for the past 10 years......lack of motivation is obviously not such a factor when you work for yourself...if I worked "for the man" I'd get fuck all done...ever.

Anyway....my top 3 tips for staying (fairly) focused and productive are as follows:
1. Set a strict finish time & stick to it. Always tempting to waste time during the day & then find yourself working in the evening.
2. Get a dart board or guitar or both. Every time I complete a job or rattle off a bunch of quotes or reports, I have a quick 501 or bash out a tune.
3. Don't start drinking or smoking weed until 5.00pm (4pm on a friday)
