Give it up Steve, your apologist attitude belies your intelligence. The government plan saw deaths as a necessary part of a strategy to protect the economy.

The whataboutery in the comparison to France is laughable.

As an island outside of schengen we have a geographical advantage a lot of mainland Europe doesn't. The government has not used that to its benefit.

All we've got now is to hope that our trajectory somehow changes direction.

I agree with you 100%, however I also don’t want to be offensive towards Steve who’s clearly a smart guy. But my god how can people not see what happened.

Agree about us having a massive geographical benefit we haven’t used to our advantage Fernando. I’ll wait to pass judgement on the other stuff as I’ve said

Appreciate that and accept your argument isn’t about political parties, but my point is that cutting from the Times has been circulated around social media today, probably leading to more people to panic and worry, believing this guy is in charge. He’s not. In addition, even the author of the article has tweeted to say it’s out of context and as detailed above Cummings was the ‘most zealous advocate of lockdown for the last 10 days’ - which would be in line with your/others thinking ?

To be honest my bone of contention all along was that we seemed to be ignoring all medical approaches in preference of a scientific one, so this is not some new social media thing that’s spooked me- it was always what I hated about it.

It took 3 months to get to 100,000 cases
It took another 12 days to get to 200,000 cases
It’s taken 3 days to get to 300,000 cases

Whatever metric you want to look at, wherever else you look, you have to come to the stark conclusion that herd immunity with no vaccine & no lockdown whatsoever was a catastrophic, irresponsible & fatal error.

Not really too concerned about which one of them made that error or if it was groupthink or whatever happened, it’s not a personal witch hunt, but this might end up being the biggest & most dangerous error made by the U.K. for decades, and I just hope that nobody forgets what these people were doing as this virus was spreading throughout the country.

Wouldn't go that far mate :)

I have however read/listened to a lot of stuff the outbreak so take quite a balanced view. I have my issues with how some of this has been handled but I’ll keep my counsel until it’s done

I wish I had some of your self control as well as your brain power :)

Any governments primary responsibility is to keep it's population safe. That is defence and health, but the current trend is that we have done too little and now it could be too late. I can't believe that we haven't stopped flights into the UK from Iran, Italy, etc.
The NHS has less capacity than 10 years ago and is struggling for equipment and staff. The numbers of Doctors who took early retirement, due to the environment they were working is significant & now we need them to come back. I can understand why some of them are not keen.
We need drastic action now, which my include more limits on our civil liberties, if the rate of spread is not going to increase further.

As promised, for those with young ones:

Take some red cabbage (either fresh or the pickled stuff), and put it in a small amount of boiled water and leave for a few minutes. Add the liquid from that to different household substances (vinegar/lemon juice/soap are good ones to start) to see what colour they turn. It works by the juice behaving as an indicator whose colour depends on the acidity of the substance added to it. You should find that acidic substances turn it pink/red while alkalis turn it green/blue.

This also works with fruit teas, beetroot and turmeric if you don’t have the cabbage.
I think we need you working on a cure!

Good post. I would also add that the frontline staff we do have still don't have the equipment they need, either to treat patients or PPE.
Even the Tory fan boys can't excuse that.

Inexcusable. I heard they’ve got the equipment centrally but shit procedures to get it circulated. If that’s the case just get a load Uber drivers to start delivering the stuff if necessary !

Ps was answering as an ordinary poster, not a fanboy ; )

It should already be in place though. What the NHS is procuring now should be over and above what they would normally need not the basics.
I have no idea why Germany seems to be handling this so well and have a low mortality rate but it would be interesting to see if the fact they have far more emergency facilities has anything to do with this.

100% it will be to do with that (25k ventilators for starters). They appear to be the country that has handled it best by a long way so far

Something needed to be done 2 weeks ago but instead we just get told there’s no problem and enough food for everyone.

Whats the point of me staying in the house all the time if when I run out of food and have to go shopping this is what I’m going to be faced with? Not like you can book a delivery or collection.

Ive skipped it this week and decided to keep eating down what we’ve got and go in the week but sooner or later I’m going to have to go. Saw some comments on reddit from checkout workers sayings it’s the same elderly people coming in day after day buying up stuff.

Something needs to be done. No delivery services and huge queues everywhere means the disease will spread like wildfire.
