That is horrific.

Think I said this before, but I have read and seen that at any given time, there are 5-10 viruses being analysed & controlled in labs which if somehow released would pose a clear & present threat to the human race. Don't know if this one would be up there in that elite group, but if not you dread to think what else is out there. Bill Gates has also been saying this for years, pretty sure you can see him on youtube saying that if people realised how close we could be at any time to being wiped out by some lethal exotic disease, our entire pattern of behaviour and way of living would change overnight.

edit... and I'm willing to bet that had anyone 6 months ago came out and said "we need to change the way we live as a society, right now, because we are creating a world that could be wiped out by infection", they would have been mocked, ridiculed, and generally verbally abused. But they would have been dead right.

Yes, the way our societies are structured looks unsustainable.

No shock after seeing how they have behaved

No I guess not but still, that makes for distressing reading. Up to 50% healthcare workers catching it while trying to save lives, it doesn't get much worse. I hope they are not sensationalising, not right to be putting such fear into people if not absolutely bang on.

How do you explain Spain and Italy? We have been having temperatures in the low 20s here recently.
It might be the case that it has a longer gestation period so symptoms are showing at a longer interval after contracting it meaning they picked it up before the good weather. It could also be that there were so many people carrying it it didn't need to stay on surfaces for very long and just passed from person to person.

Think the media need to be a bit more mindful of how they report things. The public have a right to know what's going on obviously but at the same time there's a responsibility to avoid panicking people.
That is the problem these days. Plenty of opportunities for clickbait.

But hopefully they will wake up to the danger they have put themselves in. They know there is a virus going around so they do an impression of sardines on the tubes. Wouldn't have gone near them myself.

The word going around France is it needs to be 26 degrees or more. Then the virus doesn't last long outside the host.

But who knows what to believe.

You not seen them cramming together on the underground?
Do you want them to be laid off and starve to death? They should be at home but if they work for Sports Direct and the c**t wants them in what are they supposed to do? It isn't their fault they're being exploited and TfL have cut the train numbers down. I bet none of them want to be there as much as we don't want them there.

You're falling for it, hook, line and sinker. Quite deliberate strategy of the government to blame the glaring lack of capacity in the health system on the public.
Would you have squeezed onto an underground train like they have been?

So the underground staff should have continued through illness?

Talking of conspiracy theories- Disney, pandemics and all that..

Daughter is at home watching Disney Plus- movie called Tangled.

In that the evil bad guy keeps the heroine quarantined by telling her that the outside world is dangerous and she'll die if she leaves the house. The town is called Corona :) :)
Is the evil guy's name Count Boris?

There aren't any driverless trains on the London Underground. However, the DLR trains are driverless.
"London Underground already has trains that are "driverless" in the sense that the term "train driver" is traditionally meant. The Victoria, Central and Jubilee lines are operated by Automatic Train Operation (ATO) systems - the Victoria partially so since 1968 - which mean they aren't manually controlled by people sitting in cabs at the front end except in an emergency."

Bloke in the front is just there for emergencies.

Which country was it where they increased the number of trains but each train would only stop at half the stops on the route and the next one would only go to the stops previously missed.
Good idea, I wonder if we could have done something similar?

I am no doctor so apologies. But I read the paper put up by dj, and based on that & other info thats around, it seems that genetics & individual differences has the biggest part to play- plasma levels and how each individual's body creates an immune response & how it does that with which specific proteins & how effectively each person's body can attack the 'spike' on the virus itself, which is what it uses to bind to & hijack our own cells. The only general interpretation I can see is that if you're the kind of person who gets a headcold and can be back up & bouncing in a couple of days, your body will be more likely to be able to finally produce an immune gene during the 'acute' phase and start to recover, with more antibodies created and eventually overwhelming the virus, so you have a better (but deeply painful) chance. Obviously thats why pre-existing conditions make a big difference, your body has reduced ability to produce antibodies and immune genes, so when it gets to the acute stage there isn't enough left.

So I don't understand how country temperature could make any difference to people, unless immunity is somehow different across regions as a result of the environment they live in. Seems to be much more about how your body works, and thats the scary bit because nobody knows that until they're thrown into a situation with a foreign virus inside them.

And this is also probably nonsense, but based on the paper & info out there, I'd say its pretty important right now to be eating well, staying fit, taking supplements- do absolutely everything you can to make sure that if you do contract this thing, your immune system is strong enough so that when things get serious, it has a fighting chance to create the immunity that is needed to recover.
