Pretty sure this practice only stopped in certain EU countries around 30-40 years ago.

isn't whaling Japanese and Scandinavia? I think the shark fin thing is disgusting, absolutely barbaric.
But his comments were our culture is better than Chinas, doesn't sound like he was referring to purely animal welfare..

Yes it is but the point is whaling is embedded into the culture of both those societies. Shark fin soup is a bigger part of Chinese culture than eating dogs and is a bit harder to gloss over.

You’re probably right in saying he wasn’t really into animal welfare but he was right in saying that not all cultures are equal. Though how to say one is ‘better’ than the other I don’t know. China values education considerably more than we do. I think on the whole we believe less in bogus medicine and that means we don’t end up mutilating sharks to create it.

never been to China, but I went to Hong Kong and was surprised how much they loved their dogs, (generally little things because a lot live in apartments), I thought it might be something that carried over from being under British rule.
The wet markets I saw there were all fish, no animals though that doesn't mean there weren't any but I didn't see them.
China and eating animals like dogs goes back to the days when it was eat what they could find. I can understand this. What I don't understand is how barbaric the death of the animal can be. How can anyone defend chopping off the legs then blowtorching a live animal whatever it is? And they do it for fun. Absolutely disgusting.

from what I saw it was middle aged & young white people going mental in supermarkets, is that what you mean?
I did a shop on Friday and had to repeatedly tell the white, English, 30 something male behind me in the queue to keep his distance and quite aggressively the last time. It was almost as if he was doing it deliberately.

To play devil’s advocate here, what about shark fin soup and mass whaling?

disgusting! Look- stop turning it into a nationalistic debate. I am not nationalistic, and also I don’t hate any country like some on here seem to. I have said it god knows how many times- it is not about China v us, or Italy being worse than us, or anything like that- it is about how human beings are destroying everything they touch and how depressing it is that people only seem to only want to point fingers at the other guys as opposed to doing something constructive together. Look beyond the silly country v country debates- if we do not change the way we live then this will happen every few years.

In the last 20 years we’ve had SARS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and now this- and they’re only the major ones we’ve heard about, there are more being contained every year. Something has to change- as a planet- or some day in the not too distant future something will get loose that wipes us all out and there will be fuck all anyone can do about it. That is a reality.

And droning on about foreigners is completely & utterly missing the point.

I noted some pages back reference to the medics potentially having to make decisions regarding who is ventilated and who is not.
This is not a political matter, but as in any major incident/accident or wartime the medics will make clinical decisions on whom they have the best chance of saving with the resources at their disposal. Obviously, we have to do everything possible to avoid the NHS being overwhelmed.
As previously stated my son is a Doctor on the Covid19 wards and expects numbers to increase significantly over the next 10 days.
Stats suggest a change from doubling of cases in 3.5 days now down to 2.5 days

It is disgusting. I don’t see where anyone is disputing this though.

we have been discussing animal welfare and hygiene.
I would say yes, we are ahead of the Chinese in that respect and I don't agree with the way they treat animals, even though it's fair to say we're not squeaky clean ourselves.
I would not extend that to our culture is better.

Pretty much my experience of Hong Kong also.

That’s a very good summation. They have to do something, and now- but it’s not 1.4bn people running around with exotic animals ready to fry up, and people need to understand that instead of writing off entire civilisations like they’re something from the dark ages.

Is esting dog any worse than eating cow? Are dogs closer to human evolution or something??

Cultures know what they know and will be sceptical of others

If you knew me you’d know I hate nationalism with a passion. But there are also awkward truths to acknowledge about what goes on in some parts of the world. I want to see Americans drop their horrendous healthcare system and build a proper social safety net. I want the UK to stop clinging to the glory days of Empire. I also want China to get its people to accept that it’s traditional medicine doesn’t work and to stop eating exotic animal parts in the name of that.

This isn’t about bashing foreigners for me.

I can’t get on with 99% of the ‘vegan’ meals- you have to stick with just decent natural foods or it’s like you’re eating slop :)

Do we cut the legs off the cow then blowtorch it when it is is still alive. Then the crowd that has watched the unimaginable suffering celebrate eating the cow?

Or have you missed the point?

whether you're right or wrong, citing one incident in a country over over a billion people isn't a very persuasive argument.
T
And the UNs report from a couple of years ago on poverty in the UK was damning on how people and especially children, were affected, so in this instance I think we're on thin ice criticising others.

It probably seems worse to us because we keep dogs as domestic pets but I think it's the treatment more than anything.
Like I said, we're not squeaky clean but there are some particularly barbaric practices in China.

Yes I have no issue with any of that, in fact I agree with every word. It’s not about focusing on one country & ethnic group to start bashing and slating- that has been my point all along.

If this is not taken as a serious wake up call for the entire world about how we live, and we just go back to how we were before with national disputes & squabbles and absolute service to self then all these poor fucking people have died for nothing.

I’d say the countries right now with the biggest issues are Brazil and USA- their leaders come across as psychopathic madmen who will accept thousands dead if it means the ‘wheels on the economy keep turning’.

During the Brexit debate I argued that it wasn’t the time to start flipping off the continent. When the Scottish indyref started I also argued that it wasn’t the time to flip off England. We need greater cooperation between nations and fewer divides. The united efforts of the 4 nations in tackling this disease justifies that opinion I think.

I identify as human and the world is my country. Yes I’m a misanthropic hippie but when we’re close to overpopulating the planet we can’t keep squabbling over what’s left.

Me and you are aligned then- I get called a hippy all the time and to be perfectly honest I’m very happy with that label. Love it in fact.

I just think its ironic that a lot of the people gathering on here daily to slate our government are jumping through hoops to defend the barbarians in charge of China. It seems we'll have to agree to disagree and obviously I wish you all well and hope we'll eventually get to see CCFC lift the league one trophy together.
