50k is a huge salary for anyone who hasn't lost track of reality.

Can't afford to save on 50k or more a year? Living beyond your means. Too much debt when you shouldn't need debt. If you can afford to save you should be able to live well on 2.5k a month.

No need to do a Billy Big Bollocks especially at a time like this.

I’ve left work so I’m not giving it anything - one person in a family could earn the £50 grand and the spouse stayed at home to look after children. As ever your comprehension skills and lack of ability to read has let you down

Exactly, from liverpool to the championship teams to us and whoever's istop of the national league. United and Chelsea who sue as well

The governments took a bumming recently with the handling of this. But surely these numbers are showing that if anything, out of everyone in Europe, we've done the best at keeping numbers down?

Just hypothesising here, but could be that quite a few people started taking things into their own hands a week or so before the government as it became clear the issues in Italy were serious. That would mean you’d see some impact around now.

That said we’ve seen two or three day stalls before then it getting back on trend.

I think there is something to this.

How measurable though?

Grendel just said that somebody on 50k will have expenses that match their salary. That is undoubtedly true. Yes making savings is very affordable on that salary but a lot of people don't, they instead spend more on property and goods.

Theres a long horrible road still to go down, but if we nail this, and we will know in the next 10 days or so, but if we do nail this, then the government, medical advisors, NHS, in fact the whole country should be immensely proud of ourselves.

Not wanting to put a curse on it of course but so far so good. Well as good as over 1000 deaths can be. RIP to all of them

I think when we locked down we were all sort of wanting anyway , however still a very long way to go I feel before any real measure can be assessed

there's definitely cause for optimism given the numbers and the assessment by Niall Ferguson earlier. Fingers crossed it's not misplaced.

I've just spoken to one of the guys who works with me, his grandfather died last Wednesday, probably not of COVID-19 but they need to do a post-mortem blood test to confirm - they are still waiting for the test. This means that if he test positive he will go into the figures when he's tested rather than when he died. Makes you wonder how many bodies they still have to test and potentially add to the figures!

Agree with what you've said there.

I think ze Germans take some credit though. Their numbers are decent - if that's a term that can be used in such a scenario. I know it's all down to medical provisions and testing etc. but still.

Many people die in hospital at the end of a long illness from pneumonia, and that is marked as the cause of death
In reality, it was there immunity closing down , which meant they then contracted pneumonia

I suspect covid-19 is very similar

Would also explain a lull at the weekends wouldn’t it as lab staff etc go home? I wonder if that’s in the data...

There was an interesting guy on More or Less who said your risk of dying by age group was virtually identical to your risk of dying over the next year anyway and in many ways the virus just brought those deaths forward.

Was very keen to point out that doesn’t mean you have no deaths for the rest of the year of course!

let’s face it, it was hardly the government was it, they fucked it all up so badly they ended up passing the virus between themselves and spent weeks saying that we should all get it to develop immunity

Correct- the body does not recognise the alien infection so does what it knows how to do, floods the area with its own cells, which causing inflammation on the lungs, pneumonia and basically you drown

Nobody is saying that, they're saying that people previously earning 50k will potentially find it a struggle to have a wage cut. It isn't even an arguable point.
