Firstly, I cannot believe many of the premier league players are on a standard PAYE setup & I imagine most of them pay very little tax proportionally when compared to Joe Bloggs....
...its also intrinsically linked to the totally justified outrage at CUNTY clubs like Liverpool & Spurs who are getting the tax payer to pay the wage of the clubs toilet cleaners & hotdog sellers, yet happily shovel millions per week towards their "stars".....
Yeah but people stub their toe in Italy and Germany too.
And here's an irrelevant point about Macron. And supermarkets.
Do you reckon? Let’s see how much they are remembered when it comes to pay talks and I’m not just talking nurses.

To be fair, I had the same doubts, but having read around it seems that every single football player is a PAYE employee. I can't stand over that myself, but enough people are confirming it to make me feel confident its true.

Agreed, thats why I said its not much. I can't give them a payrise but I can tell them that as far as I'm concerned these people are giants, and although it would suck morale alright, they shouldn't ever think they let anyone down.

Agree with the sentiment though.
The reason footballers get the attention is that they are obviously well known to the public. My thoughts are that if a club is considering furloughing non playing staff they should see if an agreed cut in players salaries (to cover the non playing staff monthly wage cost) could be agreed first.
I’d expect the same from other organisations ie extremely well paid bosses (earning millions a year) taking a 10-20% cut if it meant not having to use the furlough scheme or make redundancies
The wage structures/pyramids are quite unique in (top tier/premier league) football clubs so not sure it’s easy to replicate in other industries but I’d expect similar efforts
ps anyone know if Levy is taking a wage cut ?

It’s pretty simple really. Boris did say it as the video proves and the NHS has been a shambles long before this happened and he wouldn’t have got the full NHS treatment as per Joe Bloggs.

I doubt the Amazon chief exec will be taking one. They must be absolutely killing it right now as online shopping is literally all you have left.

The govt just released "full details" of the furlough scheme so all around the country people would have been logging in... only to find that its the same info as was available last week. The application portal is still not up and running and thats where we will find out what the terms are. I know 100% that they were talking about the govt vetting applications and if it was completely obvious that a claimant could support wages without needing a grant, they might reject the claim- so its not beyond the realms of possibility that we see Spurs, Liverpool etc being told that there are more deserving cases for their support. But nobody knows. It certainly seems against the spirit of the scheme for cash rich entities to be asking for help when you have some companies literally on their knees. When you read that a company has " taken furlough support", thats false, nobody can claim yet because application portal is not live. They are placing employees on furlough and intend to claim back the difference, but no claims are being processed yet. Maybe these big companies have a nod & a wink, I don't know, but nobody has "claimed" yet because there currently is no way to claim, and thats where the risk is, you might claim then get denied and find yourself having a big bill to settle.

Every professional footballer in the UK is PAYE on their club wage
Image rights and sponsorship are different and some clubs have tried paying a partial amount of salary as some sort of image rights deal. That's what's lead to people getting in trouble with the tax man.

It’s not just Tory fanboys, I’m a dye in the wool Red and I do understand the point you are trying
to put across.
But when we’re living through a Pandemic and the PM has contracted the disease and has been
admitted to hospital ‘your comments just come across as Crass and extremely insensitive.
Good shout about the claims not being possible yet, sounds like it’s their intention though (maybe/hopefully some of the larger/wealthier clubs will have second thoughts about claiming)
I don’t think the scheme will be up and running until end of April

At the very earliest because the application portal itself won't be live until then, then you have to do all the claim paperwork which will include proof that you need the funds (this is where your Spurs/ Liverpools etc may struggle)- so its unlikely any funds will be transferred for another month at least after that- and thats not a knock on the govt because thats quite some pile of admin to wade through. If you're planning to furlough you have to assume you'll get the funds no earlier than June (thats what I've done anyway)

Should be some alarm bells ringing at my company if thats the case. We've been busier than ever and they've been happy to push that out on social media as a PR move.
If it was queried not sure how you can square off being busier than ever with needing to furlough staff as there was no work for them.

It is definitely the case that the govt will review claims, but apart from that its all just a bit vague. The only thing for certain is that they have not yet claimed (because there is no way to claim), nor can they be sure their claim will be accepted because nobody knows if its just an "accept all claims no matter what" policy or if thet'll get deluged and decide to go for neediest first, or maybe higher up have been tipped off that they're ok or something, which is always possible I guess.
