Was Bobby Moore World Class? I know he was our World Cup winning captain, but he played most of his career at West Ham as part of a fairly porous defence. Not sure I actually ever saw him live, if I did it would have been at the end of his career anyway, but interested to know what the old timers on here think.

I thought the same. Had watched him on the telly loads and saw him score belters, foul loads of people but wasn’t sure what else he offered. I then saw him play live and was well impressed. Likewise Beckham, came on against at old Trafford (4-2) and made all the difference. Absolutely brilliant.
Why he stayed at West Ham
Moore staying at what at best was an average top division team is a mystery to me too, I can only think that he saw West Ham as his club which it was and was unbelievably loyal, is that a bad thing ? Geoff Hurst and Trevor Brooking the same.

Wouldn't describe him as a thug. Couldn't tackle to save his life and would go for the foul but not a thug. Esp when he played in teams with Keane!
Charlie Adam was a thug. One of those players who you knew at school was half decent but when up against someone better was a nasty little fucker who not only fouled but aimed to injure.

There was no freedom of contract in those days. I would think that the likes of Moore would have been snapped up by 'bigger clubs' at the end of one of his West Ham contracts. It now seems such an outdated system but the fact that clubs retained the player's registration at the end of his contract protected clubs like ours and ensured a much more level playing field.

That Leeds team have legendary status. Before my time but I understand they earned the legend. In my time the ones that stick out are the likes of Terry Hurlock, Vinnie Jones, Souness, Kevin Muscat...I’m sure there are others. Not ‘thuggish’ enough for that Leeds team?

He was never offside! Although I’m not sure the bloke who scored wasn’t when the pass was made to him.
The ‘gentleman hooligan’...gentlegan? Hooliman? Hooligent?...looked quite old for a pitch invader too. Although, even the players all looked about 55 back then!

You're right, they did have absolutely legendary status. Like me, you can probably reel off the entire Leeds squad from that time as easily as the Coventry city squad. They were, literally, household names.

He (goalscorer) would be considered offside now from the advantage gained in the build up. He's just out of shot when the final pass is made but I'd be amazed if he went beyond the last defender before the pass. Adge?

I've seen this footage so many times over the years but I've just realised it wasn't Jeff Astle in that 'offside' position from the initial break. He burst through up top from a clear onside position.
I give up.

I like at the end, when he blew-up, he gave a bit of a snort as if to say “right, bring it on”!
I thought the commentary was wrong. To me it seemed like Leeds didn’t have “every right to feel aggrieved”...play to the whistle! Rule number. (In fairness he does acknowledge this also).
