Think the Premier League would be foolish to just assume the value of the rights will keep rising, at some point it will top out and level off. The TV companies have to make money and there's a limit to how much people will pay. Fragmenting the market doesn't help there. Does anyone really think we're better off now we have to pay Sky, BT and Amazon compared to when we just had to pay Sky?

Think the latest sale was the first time packages had been left on the table unsold. Seem to recall Amazon purchased them at a highly discounted rate after they failed to sell.

Look at the history of those who have gone up against Sky. Remember Premiership Plus, ITV Digital and Setanta? Even ESPN, with all the backing of Disney, couldn't get off the ground and ended up shutting and licensing to BT. As for streaming Amazon was offering free trials to access their Premier League games and Eleven Sports hasn't exactly been a raging success.

And of course the likes of Sky and BT are currently pausing subscriptions losing millions in revenue.

You can still get that delivered but there is no live football. There may be an impact from people’s personal finances being worse but not enough to kill the service

Not entirely sure on the point you're making but I'm not saying that everyone will just suddenly say "nah, bored with that" and have a mass exodus just there is only so many new fans they can gather and keep interested and how much they'll pay, esp as you say with a major economic problem likely following this.

That will mean the TV/streaming companies lowering bids to reflect that and the transfers/wages needing to take heed of it as a result or many clubs will be in dire straits. Or the level of bids are maintained due to new providers wanting to get involved, creating a bidding war, but increasingly the likelihood of an ITV digital scenario where they pay over the odds.

The thing that annoys me about this is how it's marketed as adding competition into it and improving service

In reality as all those match packages are different games it's actually just increasing consumer cost and inconvenience if you want to watch all the games. It's only competition if more than one provider is showing the same game.

Couple of academics did a paper on the TV rights and came to exactly that conclusion:
“Both the overall cost to consumers and the price per game are higher with competing broadcasters than under a monopoly,” Butler and Massey said. The authors suggest that Sky’s previous monopoly has effectively been replaced by a series of separate monopolies – since all matches are only broadcast by a single UK broadcaster – which has been damaging to consumer welfare.

Overall, annual subscription fees to watch all Premier League matches have risen by over 50 per cent in real terms between the end of the BSkyB monopoly and today.

Hi Coventry City fans
As you may be aware as Scottish football wrapped up early Partick Thistle were controversially demoted from the Scottish championship to League one despite being only 2 points behind second bottom with a game still in hand and 27 points to play for.
Needless to say such a move affects the very future of the club and non playing staff as much as anyone.
There is a fundraiser for Partick Thistle if anyone is interested in contributing there is a link here
HELP THE JAGS organized by Caroline Mackie
thank you for your time. Please take care and stay safe and the very best to Coventry City when the football returns

Do you still sing the song?

Hello hello, how have you been?
We hate the boys in royal blue,
We hate the boys in emerald green,
So fuck the pope and fuck the queen!

Are they the Billy Boys?
It's 'hello hello how do you do'. I realize how the last line can look and the song is rarely sung these days for that reason. Being a Thistle fan is pretty hard - we're continually patronised and are forever being asked 'aye, but who do you really support'. The song is meant to be a reaction to the religious bigotry of the Old Firm. (who get away with singing far far worse). We can see how it causes offence though and as I said above its rarely sung these days. Thistle are very much a club whose fans don't give a flying what side of the divide you come from. Here endeth the lecture!!
